Wolf Signs On With SAVE Act

By Greg L | 5 December 2007 | Illegal Aliens, US Congress | 13 Comments

There’s been plenty of complaining seen in the comment threads that Congressman Frank Wolf hadn’t signed on as a cosponsor of the “SAVE Act”, now designated as H.R. 4088.  Well, now that complaining can stop.

From Congressman Wolf:

Immigration Reform & Border Security
Last month I added my name as a cosponsor to two important pieces of legislation aimed at combating illegal immigration.

SAVE Act
The Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act would increase the number of Border Patrol agents by 8,000 and create a pilot program to increase aerial surveillance, satellite and equipment sharing between the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. It also would increase the investigative abilities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by employing more agents and training additional state and local law enforcement personnel.

In addition, the SAVE Act (H.R. 4088) would expand the existing Employment Eligibility Verification (E-Verify) program by requiring that all employers enroll within four years. This would ensure that all workers hired have a valid work permit. The expanded program would begin with the federal government, federal contractors, and employers with over 250 employees. Smaller businesses would begin using the system in a graduated manner.

The bill also would close existing loopholes that allow illegal immigrants to use the same Social Security number and would require information-sharing between the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration and the IRS. Lastly, it would expedite the deportation of illegal aliens by expanding detention capacity and increasing the number of Federal District Court judges. The SAVE Act has 112 bipartisan cosponsors.

Prevention of Unsafe Licensing Act
I also cosponsored The Prevention of Unsafe Licensing Act (H.R. 4176), a bill which would restrict illegal aliens’ access to driver’s licenses by mandating that states must be provided with valid Social Security numbers during the application process.

Driver’s licenses are accepted for a variety of purposes including opening bank accounts, travel, renting cars, purchasing homes, just to name a few. The security of these documents are of critical importance. The 19 hijackers responsible for 9/11 carried 13 driver’s licenses and 21 state-issued ID cards. This bill has over 163 cosponsors and I am hopeful that this bill will come to the House floor during this session of Congress.

While the House has yet to consider any major immigration reform during this session of Congress, earlier this year the Senate considered an immigration reform bill which included provisions that would amount to a virtual amnesty for certain people who are in our country illegally  — some estimate that could be 12 million people or more.  I do not support amnesty, which is an insult to all the law-abiding immigrants who have been waiting in line patiently and legally for their immigration number to come up.  Such an amnesty would only intensify an already significant immigration problem and overwhelm our already overburdened social services and law enforcement systems.

The SAVE Act is a great bill, and since it was introduced by a member of the Democrat majority, the chances of it passing are pretty good if it can get to the floor, even if it drives folks like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi absolutely nuts.  The only question now is whether the leadership will allow the bill to make it through committees and to the floor for a vote.

I spoke with Congressman Eric Cantor about this briefly last weekend, and while he wasn’t ready to sign on with this, I think if a few more of his constituents contact him about the SAVE Act, we can encourage him to sign on as a sponsor as well.  It’s very probable that the entire Virginia Congressional delegation could be inspired to sign on as cosponsors, as long as they hear from enough constituents who ask them to do so.

This is a great opportunity for Democrats to show the voters that they’re going to make a concerted effort to address this issue.  President Bush has a very troubling record on the illegal alien issue, and if Democrats take control of it by proposing this kind of legislation, they could end up changing how the electorate views Democrats as the party that wants to protect illegal aliens from the consequences of their actions.  The leadership of the party is pretty clearly on the side of the illegal aliens, but up-and-coming junior legislators such as Heath Shuler are staging a very visible revolt from this policy position that is enormously popular with their constituents.  If lower-stature Democrats are able to drag along their leadership, this could make a big difference not only for federal immigration policy, but for the future prospects of the Democratic party which aren’t at all promoted as the illegal immigration issue continues to gain momentum nationally while Pelosi and Reid stonewall reform efforts.

Republicans could trot out the “not invented here” excuse as a reason to not support this measure, helping the upstarts in the Democratic party bludgeon their leadership into supporting legislative initiatives that the American people are clearly in favor of is good governance.  Helping fix the Democrats probably isn’t high on the to-do list for Republicans, but it is the right thing to do for the country, especially when they’re in the majority in Congress.

Better late than never, is Davis on board?

    Billyboy,
Davis’ constituents must call and fax him. He must get on board!

Kaine is also ignoring the need for a statewide 287g program to include out Troopers and DMV. Have YOU signed the petition yet? In case you or others haven’t here’s the link.

All of OUR elected officials need to wake up and listen to the will of the legal citizens. I hope the ignoring stops at all levels of government.
**Finally able to post again. Thank goodness**

I like Heath Shuler. I liked him when he was a Redskin.

I wonder why it took Frank Wolf this long to sign on. He should of been one of the first.

I’m glad you are back Billy Boy. I hope the Redskins win tonight.

The very fact that Calderon has the audacity to make demands upon OUR government to allow HIS underclass American citizenship; demand conditions (lack thereof) upon American aid HE is to receive; and criticizing American policy in Iraq not on moral or political grounds, but because it is “…squeezing out private investment” (implied, “in Mexico”) should be waving a red flag in the face of everyone in our government who believes in US sovereignty, from the top down. The fact that it doesn’t should scare all American citizens and legal immigrants. Can you imagine how we would fare in a “North American Union” where we are only 1/3 of the equation?

I love Frank Wolf! He’s my hero. The rest of the scumbags that won’t stand up for America against illegal alien terrorists among us can be replaced and humiliated at the ballot box for supporting the terrorists.

And supporting Calderon, rather than US citizens. What idiots we have cultivated in our 1970s social engineering classes….
