We weren’t the first and I am sure we will not be the last to do a little low-jacking. Plus, dvr is well worth any hi-jacking. Get the HD one if you get one, even if you don’t have an HD tv yet. It holds more regular def shows.

For those of you who don’t feel tech savvy, don’t worry. If you can work a remote, you can work dvr. You can be dumb as a post with technology and still do just fine. I only know one person who cannot work mine….out of kids, grandkids and husband. Guess which one??????

I like DVD recorders. Unfortunately, it would appear that the only low-cost (under $120) DVD recorders now sold don’t have tuners in them, thanks to the Federal Gov’t. (They mandated that any consumer electronics device sold in the USA with an NTSC tuner, starting March 1 2007 have an ATSC–HDTV–tuner in it, which adds to the cost).

I’d be happy with a DVD recorder that just has an NTSC tuner.

I guess this effectively kills the VCR. Nobody’s going to be making a $40 VCR with an ATSC tuner in it!

Oh, by the way, unless you intend to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna, the ATSC tuner is useless to you.

I’ve found that if I don’t have time to watch a TV show when it was first broadcast, I probably won’t have time to watch it later either.

I think DVD recorders for TV are a pain in the neck. Too much work.

DVR is every so much more pleasant. You can still send your program to DVD from the DVR.

If you get DVR from Comcast do you need THE BOX.

For comcast the box and the DVR are one in the same..nothing extra.

I had the comcast DVR for awhile, I liked it. However A few months ago I shifted to directv and got their DVR’s. I’m pretty satisfied, they have more HD channels as well.

Comcast just plain sucks, I’m glad to be rid of them and I’m saving money every month because of it :)

Oh well, THE BOX means a technician must enter our home. My husband will not allow any Comcast person in our house after a yelling incident 10 years ago. Guess I will have to stick with my cheap VCR.

    Thanks,

comcast is totally lame now! They are seriously pandering too! I click on what appears to be a movie link in English and then the whole write-up is in (guess what language???). I might get rid of comast. They have sold out. By the way, my comcast bill is rather expensive. Surely, those people that have 5 plus kids, use foodstamps, free medical cannot afford the rididiculous comcast prices now can they? How is that possible?

Actually you can install it yourself. Just substitute dvr for the box. Follow the cords.

I really don’t see what’s a pain in the neck about DVD recorders. Put a blank DVD in (can use rewriteable ones), set the timer, and come back and watch it later. No rewiding or fast forwarding, and if you want to make a permanent copy, just take the DVD to your computer and rip it.

As far as I’m aware the current crop of DVRs don’t make it very easy to get what you’ve recorded out of them and onto your computer. Oh sure you can get a video capture card for your computer and do it that way, but that’s a lot more work than ripping a DVD and takes longer.

    MP Resident,

I think it depends on what you want to do with your recording. If you want to save it for a long time or permanently, your way is better.

If you want to watch it and erase, my way is easier. I can pick up 2 shows at once, watch it and erase it. My dvd recorder is not very fancy. Perhaps that is why I consider it a pain in the neck. I just like the dvr because an idiot can push a button on the remote control. Compared to setting up a permanent or semi permanent recording, it is beyond easy because I push a button from the program guide.

I also don’t have a tuner on my laptop. I do on my desktop but never use it. I am in no danger of going through sensory deprivation here at Dolph Acres.

PWC is facing some serious funding shortages over the next several years. The county’s CIP was presented last Tuesday and has gone largely unnoticed here. The presentation Tuesday gave the Board a proposed CIP that is
$500 MILLION less than the CIP presented last year. $500Million. That is all about lost opportunity for PWC. School, Training Centers for Public Safety, Libraries and Parks.

All the things that bring economic develpment to any area + ILEGAL IMMIGRATON ISSUES. BOTH must be fixed.

There was a post about the NVTA increase that is about to decend upon us all as well, hopefully the “post-er” will move to this open thread and bring that back up for discussion.

PWC is not alone with this problem. PWC knew about it early on last year. There is no one to blame for the problem - however, not taking it head on as Mrs. Caddigan and Mr. Jenkins attempted to do last spring is now taking it’s toll and having a widespread impact.

Botom line, schools attract businesses. While per pupil spending is not the most thougtful measure of effectiveness, it’s the perfect soundbite. Being highest or lowest in the region indicates a problem. PWC is now the lowest.

Not good for the number of homes on the market.

It is a tax increase that is calculated $5.00 per $1,000 based on the consideration of the home.It comes out of the Grantor ( seller’s pocket) This is part of the new Commuter Tax fee.
It increased from $1.00. That is steep!

    redawn,

Will this tax only hit home sales or will it also hit refinances? That is very steep indeed! Does it only hit NOVA homes or will it affect home sales in the entire state?

It will only be collected on the sale of a home paid by the seller (ouch, with the falling market values)

    It affects the following counties:

    Fairfax
    Loudoun
    Alrington
    City of Alexandria
    Prince William

    effective on January 1, 2008

    Dolph, Sorry…this explains it better.

FYI - for anyone planning on selling in 2008, NVAR recently received notice that the grantor’s tax will increase from $1.00 per $1,000 to $5.00 per $1,000 on January 1, 2008. The revenue from the increase will go toward transportation projects of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA).

The localities affected by the increase are: the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, City of Falls Church, City of Fairfax, Fairfax County (including the Towns of Clifton, Herndon and Vienna), Loudoun County, City of Manassas, City of Manassas Park, and Prince William County.

What does this mean for you? Before, if you sold your house for $500,000, $500 would go to the county as a grantor’s tax. With this new increase, if you sell your house for $500,000, $2,500 will go to the county as a grantor’s tax.

That and other information can be found here: Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS® - nvar.com

Should I be feeling betrayed? At least I live in the Gainesville District and didn’t get sold out by MY supervisor.

The county budget situation is totally scary. Being the lowest with per pupil spending is just embarrassing. How can a county tout a World Class school system when they are low man on the totem pole? No money for roads? I guess we won’t be seeing our traffic situation getting any better.

What galls me is all the people trumpeting about being willing to pay higher taxes to get rid of illegals. Unless I have misread something in that budget summary, we have a lot bigger issues at hand that are far more urgent. Follow the money. Just how much more in taxes will we all be willing to pay?

The BOCS needs to get over their desire to appease a fickle electorate and needs to start acting fiscally responsible. Did anyone hear about these dire straits BEFORE the election?

It was briefly discussed at the budget meetings last April. To no avail.

According to the Pot News, the Supervisors were briefed again a few times on this in September and October, well before the election.

If I hear $800 million dollar budget “what’s the problem” one more time, I will barf. Such lack of understanding.
