It was briefly discussed at the budget meetings last April. To no avail.

According to the Pot News, the Supervisors were briefed again a few times on this in September and October, well before the election.

If I hear $800 million dollar budget "what's the problem" one more time, I will barf. Such lack of understanding.

One Voice and Redawn:

Should I be feeling betrayed? At least I live in the Gainesville District and didn't get sold out by MY supervisor.

The county budget situation is totally scary. Being the lowest with per pupil spending is just embarrassing. How can a county tout a World Class school system when they are low man on the totem pole? No money for roads? I guess we won't be seeing our traffic situation getting any better.

What galls me is all the people trumpeting about being willing to pay higher taxes to get rid of illegals. Unless I have misread something in that budget summary, we have a lot bigger issues at hand that are far more urgent. Follow the money. Just how much more in taxes will we all be willing to pay?

The BOCS needs to get over their desire to appease a fickle electorate and needs to start acting fiscally responsible. Did anyone hear about these dire straits BEFORE the election?

Dolph, Sorry...this explains it better.

FYI - for anyone planning on selling in 2008, NVAR recently received notice that the grantor's tax will increase from $1.00 per $1,000 to $5.00 per $1,000 on January 1, 2008. The revenue from the increase will go toward transportation projects of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA).

The localities affected by the increase are: the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, City of Falls Church, City of Fairfax, Fairfax County (including the Towns of Clifton, Herndon and Vienna), Loudoun County, City of Manassas, City of Manassas Park, and Prince William County.

What does this mean for you? Before, if you sold your house for $500,000, $500 would go to the county as a grantor's tax. With this new increase, if you sell your house for $500,000, $2,500 will go to the county as a grantor's tax.

That and other information can be found here: Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS® - nvar.com

It will only be collected on the sale of a home paid by the seller (ouch, with the falling market values)

It affects the following counties:

Fairfax
Loudoun
Alrington
City of Alexandria
Prince William

effective on January 1, 2008

redawn,

Will this tax only hit home sales or will it also hit refinances? That is very steep indeed! Does it only hit NOVA homes or will it affect home sales in the entire state?

It is a tax increase that is calculated $5.00 per $1,000 based on the consideration of the home.It comes out of the Grantor ( seller's pocket) This is part of the new Commuter Tax fee.
It increased from $1.00. That is steep!

PWC is not alone with this problem. PWC knew about it early on last year. There is no one to blame for the problem - however, not taking it head on as Mrs. Caddigan and Mr. Jenkins attempted to do last spring is now taking it's toll and having a widespread impact.

Botom line, schools attract businesses. While per pupil spending is not the most thougtful measure of effectiveness, it's the perfect soundbite. Being highest or lowest in the region indicates a problem. PWC is now the lowest.

Not good for the number of homes on the market.

PWC is facing some serious funding shortages over the next several years. The county's CIP was presented last Tuesday and has gone largely unnoticed here. The presentation Tuesday gave the Board a proposed CIP that is
$500 MILLION less than the CIP presented last year. $500Million. That is all about lost opportunity for PWC. School, Training Centers for Public Safety, Libraries and Parks.

All the things that bring economic develpment to any area + ILEGAL IMMIGRATON ISSUES. BOTH must be fixed.

There was a post about the NVTA increase that is about to decend upon us all as well, hopefully the "post-er" will move to this open thread and bring that back up for discussion.
