Lou Dobbs: Gov. Kaine “A Complete Cop-Out”

By Greg L | 15 December 2007 | Illegal Aliens, Virginia Politics | 27 Comments

Tonight’s broadcast of Lou Dobbs Tonight included a segment on Governor Kaine’s steadfast refusal to enroll the Commonwealth in the Section 287(g) Program, and the show body-slammed Kaine for his inane position that Virginia should not be involved in ensuring that federal immigration law is respected and upheld. While Delegate Dave Albo was interviewed in the segment, the Governor refused to defend his position, and the only statement provided to Lou Dobbs was from Kaine’s spokesman George Hickey:

“There is no reason the state should step in when the federal government does not do its job.”

So if FEMA fails to respond in the wake of a natural disaster in Virginia, is Governor Kaine going to sit on his hands while Virginians suffer, in another bout of determined finger-pointing by our chief porch sitter? This makes no sense at all.

The segment identified Virginia as a “mecca for illegal immigration”, and showed footage of MS-13 gang members being taken into custody in Northern Virginia. Delegate Albo countered Kaine’s hypocrisy with the clear and self-evident observation that should make sense to Governor Kaine, but apparently does not: “We need to get out there and save our communities.” While Kaine points fingers and does nothing, at least Albo and the Virginia Crime Commission understands what is at stake here and is proposing reforms that will help.

The reporter in the segment finished with “Yes, Virginia, there is an illegal immigration overload, and the states have to get involved in the crackdown” and Dobbs nailed Kaine’s policies as “a complete cop-out” when summing up. If Kaine is unwilling to recognize this problem and address it, it could really make things difficult for Virginia Democrats in 2008 and 2009, as it’s going to be awfully hard for Democrats to distance themselves from these positions at the same time they’re depending on his support for their campaigns.

Let’s that hope Lou Dobbs keeps digging his teeth into this issue. Given the results of tonight’s viewer poll, perhaps he might:

Question: Do you believe it is reasonable and appropriate for American citizens to expect that local, state and federal governments work together to enforce all U.S. laws including immigration laws?

Yes 98% 10185
No 2% 256
Total Votes: 10441

The govenor is an embarrassment to the Commonwealth of Virginia. At least the next one probably won’t be a democrat.

“There is no reason the state should step in when the federal government does not do its job.”

THANK YOU Kaine Spokesman George Hickey who will see these “brilliant” words repeated over and over again in print, radio, and TV as you have just shifted the election good fortune back to the wing of the GOP that understands the public outrage over illegal immigration and that fighting the illegal immigration problem will be the number 1 issue in campaigns from President on down to Town Council races over the next 2 years.

Those who get it will prevail, those who don’t will be ousted. Kaine and his ilk are erasing every gain they have made since 2001. Gordon Hickey deserves a big bonus from the GOP coffers.

    THANK YOU!….a gift to us!!

Should we also assume that because of George Bush’s refusal to step up to the plate over illegal immigration, Republicans will have a difficult time with the presidential election? The buck stops with George Bush. Perhaps Gov. Kaine is just trying to punctuate this fact and bring home the reality that we have a failed national immigration policy under a Republican administraton.

Stranger politics have been played out.

Dolph - What a sensible comment. This is a two-way street, definitely.

not apathetic - So who’s your hope for governor of Virginia next time?

I’ve never been a great Kaine fan, but if Lou Dobbs is against him, there must be some merit to the man.

Is there any possibility Gov Kaine meant that if the feds aren’t going to pay we can’t?

Regarding FEMA - true this is exactly what most expect the Feds to do. We want less government, but would certainly welcome FEMA into our home if it was destroyed.

I am for FEMA. I am for being strategic about what government services the Feds should provide. Transportation and infrastructure, Law and Order, Safety and Security of Our borders. Think that is their main mission. So how did we get NCLB? Gay marriage as a consitutional amendment? Abortion? Regardless of what we think about these issues, WE need to put some of these distracting issues aside at the federal level and get them re-focused on their missions.

FEMA restores all of these primary missions after a disaster.

Tim Kaine won the governorship pretty handily in 2005. Since then, Virginia has lost a Republican senator and the once Republican-held House. How many more losses will it take before VA Republicans realize that there are other issues on voters’ minds besides illegal immigration (not the least of which is the Iraq war)?

On Loudoun Board, Growth May Trump Immigration Issues

    By Sandhya Somashekhar
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Sunday, December 16, 2007; Page A01

Loudoun County’s much-publicized election-year effort to root out and drive away illegal immigrants may fizzle six months after it began, as a slate of Democrats with different priorities prepares to take control of the Board of Supervisors next month.

Loudoun was quick to follow Prince William County last summer in attempting to crack down on what some board members said were problems created by illegal immigrants, and many elected officials used the issue in their fall campaigns.

But the Loudoun board that will be sworn in Saturday has a different mission.

“The emphasis is going to be on issues of growth and transportation and education,” said C. Kelly Burk (D), one of four Democrats who defeated incumbent Republicans in the Nov. 6 election. “I want to get back to what people are concerned about.”

What little I’ve seen of Lou Dobbs makes me think he’s more Tancredo-ish than Tancredo hemself. Sometimes he says something that makes me think he’d want to run for president!

    Dolph:

You forgot to mention the Senate the Republicans will most likely lose next Fall. Creigh Deeds has already announced is candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor. Brian Moran has said he’ll wait to make his decision until after the legislative session. So who is the presumptive Republican nominee to take back the state house?

And the FEMA anology is flawed. FEMA is actually swcondary support to local disaster response, not the first line. FEMA is called in when the problem is too big for local response or too widespread. A better analogy would be to ask if the states should take over for the military and each design their own strategy for Iraq. The courts have made it clear that immigration is in the federal domain. Before labelling Kaine’s policy as a cop-out, how about putting more pressure on the President and Congress to do their job. Before asking the states to foot the bill for yet another federal responsibility, let’s get our money’s worth from the Feds.

The people may think it is the number one issue, but in reality, how much is it being talked about in the presidential debates. The Democrats are running from the issue. Then you got the Republicans…McCain is for “Guest Worker”, Rudy…well enough said on his record…Then Huckabee..he’s made enough statements that makes you question where he will take the issue. And George Bush….good grief. Outside of Lou Dobbs, who in the media is anti illegal immigration?

Kaine better be careful. He is playing right into the Republican’s hands. Mark Warner is an odds on favorite to win the Senate, but the more Kaine digs his heels in, the more it hurts Warner.

I personally do not read the WaPo and take what they say with a grain of salt. What the WaPo is doing is trying to shape the news and better yet, from their point of view, invent “news”.

I think both parties can take a lot of responsibility for the mess we have. No doubt Bush has worked to make inforcement efforts impotent. However, have we forgotten the debacle of “immigration reform” legislation that most Democrats supported?

Kaine cannot throw up his hands on this issue. The state does have a responsibility here. The fact that the illegal apologists throw this same argument out tells me that our governor likely is being pressured/influenced by other forces rather than listening to the voice of the people in the Commonwealth.

I voted for Governor Kaine because I was tired of the republicans tight hands on its citizens. Well to my surprise all I got was a republican in democrats clothing . Governor Kaine was once a member of the republican party. What a great time to become a democrat when the nation was showing its dissatisfaction with the republicans.
He likes to keep things under the radar and play the blame game. I know one vote he wont be getting next election. One thing he did do good was that he made me realize not to just sit back and not keep tabs on what hes doing. I hope Lou Dobbs and all media will continue to inform its citizens of the politicians we elect and what they stand for AFTER the elections!!!!!!!!!!!!
