Davis Is Not Running
By Greg L | 16 December 2007 | Virginia Politics, US Congress | 7 Comments
Evidence continues to mount that Tom Davis will not seek re-election in the 11th Congressional District in Virginia, with new reports that senior staffers are leaving and district offices are shutting down. With Gerry Connolly and Leslie Byrne expected to run for the Democratic nomination, so far there’s been scant mention of what Republicans might run for this seat. Without a definitive announcement by Davis about his intentions, he’s frozen all the potential candidates in place, who are eager to find out whether there’s going to be a vacancy here, or whether they’re going to have to look elsewhere for promotion opportunities. Maybe it’s time for them to stop waiting for Davis.
I’m calling this one, folks. No, Tom Davis hasn’t made an announcement yet, but it’s hard to telegraph his intentions any more clearly.
Delegate Tim Hugo would appear to have the upper hand here among the potential candidates for the Republican nomination, and I’ll bet he’ll poll well against anyone the Democrats nominate. While the conventional wisdom has been that once Tom Davis relinquishes the 11th District there’s no chance a Republican will be able to retain it, Hugo could well prove that conventional wisdom wrong. There are a few other potential candidates, but it’s going to take Tom Davis making an announcement for them to get flushed out. The longer Tom Davis waits to tell us what he’s going to do, the harder it will be for anyone to successfully run.
Tom, it’s time to end the suspense. Tell us you’re not running.

We keep hearing that he’ll decided (and tell us all) in January…
Good news. Maybe now we can get someone in there who will do more about illegal immigration and less about making sure DC gets voting reps in DC so DC can then impose a commuter tax on Va. residents.
A couple of months ago there was a short article in Government Executive online magazine to the effect that he would not seek reelection. As I stated in my comment to that article, Davis’ district, once populated largely by responsible, tax paying military and government workers is now full of illegal aliens. It is gridlocked at the mere rumor of precipitation. Real estate taxes are astronomical there and will only go higher as the tax burden of illegals is foisted on homeowners. He deflects attention with such silliness as hearings on steroid use in baseball. His government reform committee that he chaired for so many years has been successful beyond anyone’s imagination at making the federal procurement system the laughing stock of the world. His district, and the country, cannot afford him much longer.
Could it be that Davis is so angry with the GOP going against his wishes and selecting a convention that he’s out to prove they can’t do much in the 11th without him?
It has been time for Davis to seek other employment for years. At least at two citizen gatherings he called, he insisted “ear marks” are good, then turn around and call for greater restraint on spending, the true “jackass”.
I live in the 11th district. As for my property taxes and gridlock, I blame them on Connolly and his cronies. Connolly is too cozy with developers.
I don’t like everything Davis says or does, but he is better than Connolly.
Don’t get me going about Byrne. Please don’t get get me going about Byrne. Please.
No matter how bad a Republican does it, a Democrat is going to do it fifty times worse.
