Anon,

You can take exeption all you like, anon.

As I see it, the problem is not with the immigrants but a currently dysfunctional immigration policy. A policy that should be serving the national interests -

The problem is not where immigrants come from but with what they bring with them - ANY soveriegn nation on this planet has the right to formulate, decide and enforce it's immigration policy. ANY nation has the right to decide who can and can't enter based on national interests and what is best for it's citizenry.

If I set my heart on emigrating to Mexico, Malaysia, Sweden, Japan or Jamaica (pick a nation-any nation) - I would still need to abide by the immigration policy of my nation of choice - and those policies are going to favor the national interests over my desires. Favor the needs of the citizens first and foremost.

What we have now is a system that places the desires of the immigrant over the citizenry. A system that is rife with abuse and fraud. A visa lottery system that negates any national concerns. A system of family chain migration that has created a huge backlog of applicants and each applicants sole claim to wanting entry is based on a family tie - regardless of how or if that person is a benefit or burden. Nepotism 101.

http://www.englishfirst.org/ballots/citusa6000.htm

http://www.justice-denied.net/INSCorruption_01.htm

Every nation can decide whether allowing immigrants in will be a benefit or a burden - ecenomicaly and culturally - Whether they want to be dependant on foreign labor - Whether by importing immigrants they are duplicating their own labor recourses and competing with and possibly displacing their own people.

Who the heck can stand up for legal immigration when the whole process is in a state of chaos. When immigration has been turned into an industry rife with fraud and lax standards. Who, after all, is insulted most by this shoddy system? Every immigrant who has acted honorably to become part of this nation.

Anonymous,
I guess, I should've been clearer I was saying "alright" to her saying "I have my opinion and you have yours". This is not an attitude taken my many. I'm inclinded to think you'd agree with me on that. No, I've worked with many legal immigrants, have written letters on behalf of employees that were in the process of becoming citizens, and remember all of us quizzing one neighbor as she was preparing to become a citizen. We all learned a lot, and the adults got a refresher course in US History.
Hey, how about picking a handle or put something after that anon like a number/letter/character? Please, it keeps the confusion of the "anons" down. You seem reasonable. :)

Lafayette -

This is the comment from Bridget that I took exception too..."AND NO, I do not want immigrants, legal or illegal ,if they impact American jobs and possibly put Americans out of work." You didn't stand up and say you were for legal immigration, you merely supported Bridget and, in a way, dismissive of my support for two people who were here legally before and are seeking a return for doing something noble. I do tend to think of you as open minded, which was why I was disappoint in your support for her views against legal immigrants like my sister-in-law.

Anon,
Oh, no I'm not of that mind set at all. I'm one of the most open minded you will find here on bvbl. I have respect for others and that includes their opinions even if I don't agree with them. Good luck finding many more like me. I can only think of about 5 others. I NEVER said you or anyone else was not entitled to their opinion. I am one who can AGREE TO DISAGREE. I think of myself as RATIONAL, NOT RADICAL. Think about it.

She's here LEGALLY, and that's no problem.
The problem lies with the ILLEGALS. I welcome all legal immigrants. I've live my entire life next to legal immigrants from England, Germany, and two Guatamalen families. Don't think you'll get me on that one.

My sister-in-law came here legally a year ago. I suppose you are angry she works at Walmart. Taking a job away from an American. She came her legally and has the right to work. Why should anyone stop her because she speaks English as a second language or she is an Asian/Pacific Islander on the application box.

Turning down $25K means to me that they would rather work for what they have then be given it. I would rather have two legal heroes in my country than a bunch of illegal arrivals.

I have my opinion Lafayette. Am I not entitled to it because it doesn't match up with yours?

What, and you can't consider for a slim moment that granting two U.S. work visas could impact two American workers?

AND NO, I do not want immigrants, legal or illegal ,if they impact American jobs and possibly put Americans out of work.

They saved a child. As previously stated, THEIR EFFORTS ARE COMMENDABLE. They did a good thing and millions do good things every day without expecting to hit the jackpot as a result.

I can well imagine many who would do the same WITHOUT expecting a big opportunistic payoff.

Back in '82 my father helped rescue three kids out of a burning car. There was no freaking Lifetime movie deal or fat check in it for him. He got a small plack from the local fire and rescue department and a handshake from the Chief. His reward was knowing those kids did not perish. Thats more than plenty for most.

What would really be commendable is if they turned down any form of reward.

And if you think turning down 25 grand in order to get two U.S. work visas is an act of sacrifice ... guess again.

Chill out. I have no say in the matter. Neither do you. You have your opinion, so do I. Free speech sucks that way, for sure...

What, you don't want legal immigrants here either, Bridget? They saved a 12 year old American girl's life. They are being offered $25,000 and are asking for visas instead of the money. That is commendable in its own right.

Oh yeah. If two Americans had done it, they'd be offered a movie deal on Lifetime, for sure...

Anonymous,

Not detracting from their commendable efforts to search for and save the girl, but according to the article, Manuel worked in forestry and his brother Miguel is an elecrician.

If they get the prize they want - U.S. work visas - do they also get to choose a U.S. forestry employee and a U.S. electrician to replace?

If two American guys had saved a Panamanian girl from a plane wreck, what sort of award do you think they would have be granted?

Here are some heroes who have been here legally (left when the work visa ran out) and are hoping to return legally as a reward for saving the life of the girl in the Panamanian plane crash. I hope they are permitted a visa to return.

Yes, Alexandrianagainstillegals, I went to the meeting last Wednesday at Judicial Watch to discuss forming a regional coalition of groups in Maryland, Virginia, and DC. I also went to the meeting last Monday at the Rockville Library where our speaker was ICE Senior Special Joseph Beahn. Mr. Beahn said if ICE is called, they will come. We have not been hearing the complete truth from our police chiefs.

Most of the Help Save groups from Virginia attended, as well as Defend DC, different chapters of Help Save Maryland, and ANCIR, among others.

This was a preliminary meeting to get the ball rolling on a regional coalition of groups opposed to illegal immigration.

The important thing to note is that Judicial Watch is supportive of filing defensible lawsuits against agencies that cater/aid illegal aliens. The laws in Virginia are much more favorable for law suits than in Maryland. In fact, Judicial Watch is responsible for the Herndon Day Laborer Center being shut down.

I did some research and see where the niece clearly has many angry feelings towards here aunt, but none are substantiated by anything remotely resembling a fact. I don't believe any politician can be put on a pedestal, but she had no reason to go back to Pakistan, demonstrated from the attack on the day she arrived, she knew her life was clearly in danger. I don't believe she was motivated by money. My friends father had a famous saying, "I've never seen a hearse with a u-haul".

Maybe, maybe not re: Bhutto. I tend to look at things like that with a grain of salt.

re: Benazir Bhutto. Her niece has a column in the LA Times today. Benazir Bhutto had her own brother assassinated. Bhutto and her husband have been involved in corruption in Pakistan on a grand scale. Bhutto was not anti-terrorist. She should not have been assassinated but we do have to be aware of what we're dealing with here.

One Voice,

Yes, the assasination of Bhutto and the attempted assasination of another candidate today is extremely bad news for Pakistan and our struggle against extemist elements of Islam. This is a bigger threat to our long term security than any "invasion" of Mexicans could ever be. Our unflinching support of Musharif could very well be the nail in our coffin in Pakistan.

A Washington-based friend of Bhutto's, Mark Siegel, told CNN that the former prime minister had been "very concerned that she was not getting the security that she had asked for," including devices used to jam cell phone signals.

"She had asked for special tinted cars, she had asked for four vehicles to surround her at all times," Siegel said. "All of that was denied to her.

Gul asserted that a suicide bomber couldn't have carried out the attack without being forewarned of Bhutto's movements with a cell phone or other device.

Bhutto had complained after the October assassination attempt in the city of Karachi that jamming devices had not been working, Gul said.

"Why were the jammers not working? She had been begging the government after the attack in Karachi saying the jammers were faulty then," he said. "I know that these things could not occur if the jammers are working."
