BVBL Awards of 2007

By Greg L | 2 January 2008 | Blogs | 2 Comments

2007 was a good year for websites covering local politics, many of which haven’t gotten much in the way of recognition. To hopefully correct that situation to some degree, I’ve decided to honor a few websites for their contributions this year. So without further ado, here are this year’s awardees:

In the category of “Best Under-Rated Local News Story of 2007″, the winner is:
Town of Haymarket Community Site, “Police Cover-Up: K-9 Disappears”

Sometimes it’s the small towns that provide the most bizarre scandals. In this case, the Haymarket Chief of Police had been charging the taxpayers for the expenses related to his family pet under the guise of the animal being a K-9 for the police department. After the scandal breaks, the dog suddenly disappears. You can’t make this kind of stuff up.

In the category for “Best Local Scoop of 2007″, the winner is:

Mason Conservative: “Connolly Comes Unglued At NAACP Event”

Leave it to Gerry Connolly to start foaming at the mouth in front of a friendly crowd telling everyone that he apparently was in charge of the Fairfax NAACP. No one else bothered to cover this story, especially the mainstream media, which makes this account so deeply compelling. Deep within the public schedules of some local politicians are rich opportunities to observe who our elected officials really are, and fortunately some of my blogging brethren are there to catch all the action.

In the category of “Best Original Political Humor of 2007″, the winner is:

Raising Kaine: “Del. Jeff Frederick (R-52): Right-Wing Whackjob, Funny Guy!”

Although RK doesn’t seem to fully appreciate this, watching Delegate Frederick direct someone to block the camera angle of one of (presumably) RK’s guys looking for the next video “macacca moment” at last year’s General Assembly session is priceless. While they don’t appreciate this lighter moment in the General Assembly, I sure do.

There are certainly many other worthy contributions to the public discourse over the past year that I haven’t recognized here, but these definitely constitute highlights. This year there will undoubtedly be more.

Community Webshots - Lafayette received over 1,200 hits this week alone. Would you consider that for one of your awards?

I think BVBL gets the best Virginia blog award, especially for the Rack n Roll series.
