It’s Gerry Vs. Leslie

By Greg L | 2 January 2008 | Fairfax County, US Congress, Prince William County | 7 Comments

As expected, Gerry Connolly has announced he is forming his exploratory committee for a run at the 11th Congressional District, as NLS points out within less that 24 hours into his term as Chairman of the Fairfax Board of County Supervisors. Connolly will face off against Leslie Byrne for the nomination of the Democratic Party, a contest that will almost certainly be brutal, given what we saw the last time Connolly ran for a higher seat.

Since James Walkinshaw is expected to serve as Connolly’s campaign manager, at this point I’d say Leslie Byrne should be favored to win the nomination.

Could we vote for ‘neither of the above’ and stick with Tom Davis?

It’s Leslie vs. Gerry vs. Denneny… don’t forget that - if it gets bad between Leslie and Gerry, folks might go for the third option.

Connolly is such a jerk - I continually remind NLS that he endorsed this guy for re-election. That act really made me lose a lot of respect for NLS, and proves that he is nothing more than a partisan hack. Greg got grief below for attacking Ebert and had to defend himself by pointing out his criticism of Republicans. NLS should have stood up for what’s right and backed Gary Baise. Baise probably was never going to win anyway, but I don’t see how anyone knowledgeable about Connolly and his ways could ever endorse him, no matter how partisan they are.

The third option — Doug Denneny — is the best option for the Democrats. We need to get away from the tired old fights (and personalities) of the past and put forward a candidate that reflects the best the Democrats have to offer. Neither Leslie nor Gerry can challenge Doug on national security — Doug has fought in battle for this nation and been highly decorated. His emphasis on fiscal discipline is important in beating Davis and the Republicans — and also Gerry (doesn’t Fairfax now have a big deficit?). And who would we rather have run with Mark Warner: Doug, who offers a strong new vision or Leslie who has repeatedly insulted Warner (I think she called him a rat at some point).

Anyway, we need to organize behind the candidate who will not have huge money but has tremendous potential.

Greg, what are you trying to tell us with that picture?

We’ll see if Denneny raises any money, and if he fires Resnick– then he might be considered a serious candidate.
