Over where I live (in Fairfax), regular American people cross in the middle of the major road near my house despite the presence of the crosswalk, so I must disagree slightly with the Darwin Award observations. Drivers ignore the signs that say no right turn on red when pedestrians are present and try to bully the pedestrians.

Happens in PWC too. No police enforcement.

johnson,

You should have immediately called the police after getting the tag number and reported the incident.

I honestly dont remember gay's being a big issue last election. as far as being afraid and hating..I dont think people "hate" illegals, I think they are afraid of their way of life being destroyed.

take the way things were 10-15 years ago and compare them to today, do you think illegals changed your life? I think they changed mine. I know they are basically forcing me to pay enormous amounts of money to send my kids to private school so they can have a decent education that years ago..I got for free (and it was excellent)

I will lay money that 2008 comes down to immigration issues, mark my words totally.

gays are the least of anyone's worries and honestly I dont care what/who/where they do or go..as long as they are legal to this country who really cares.

independent,

It's far easier to report on crime committed by hispanics because it's becoming more prevalent these days. Notice how crime committed by hispanics seems to make front page news fastest? Ever think it was because the public in general is pretty ticked about illegal immigration? Negative sentiments with regard to illegal immigration run deep, it's by and large the top topic that many people mention during election time in late 2007 and now in 2008....

I think we'll see more highlights on hispanic and/or illegal alien crime in the future and not just on this blog so I would get used to it.

johnson,

I would totally agree, I see many cases with people of these cultures putting their personal safety (or those of their families) in jeaporday in rediculous ways. Come to think of it, I cruized by walmart the other day and saw a car driving in the parking lot with a hispanic woman in the front passenger seat...along with an infant in her lap!

Didnt really think much of her nationality, other than I was irritated with her holding a young child in a moving vehicle, without a car seat. Of course, my two young children both in car seats in the back.

I agree with the cultural aspect of pedestrian vs. vehicle. I have also observed the attitude among central american cultures that "whatever will be, will be." This attitude seems to apply to many aspects of their views on personal safety, especially seat belts/car seats for children. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen infants on the lap of front seat passengers and no seat belts on anyone in the vehicle. It's as if they believe that a small measure of prevention has no bearing on the outcome of vehicle crashes. Hence, no license or insurance. Not trying to be judgemental or racist, just making an observation.

anne,

I would agree with your statement however drivers and pedestrians will always collide, it's the nature of things. The best people can do is try to avoid those collisions. Walking outside of the crosswalk defnitely improves the odds of something happening as it did in this case.

I do think it's a cultural thing, maybe back in mexico they roam the streets being as that it's a third-world country but they are here now so they can abide by our rules.

I saw some hispanic drunk wandering around old bridge road last night around 10 or so..almost got hit a few times, if he did this during rush hour he would have been clocked for sure.

The crosswalk is very dangerous. I've yelled at a whole bunch of people when I've been crossing the street. They just make believe the signs and the red light are not even there.

The only way to get a safety margin at "my" corner is to risk a crossing position further down and to bolt for the median. This is because the police do nothing to enforce the signs and rarely hand out tickets to the crosswalk bullies. I noticed a spate of good behavior a couple days ago because a cop was out there ticketing people. It's a hefty fine - I think $200 extra - so his being there will remind the daily drivers for awhile. Soon, everyone will forget, and cat and mouse will resume.

For some reason, yes, Hispanic people DO seem to cross in the middle of the road anyway. Must be a "cultural" thing in part because I do see them doing it even in places where the crosswalk is safe. It's definitely something you don't want to do unless you have a damned good reason because crosswalks are where drivers are supposed to expect to see you and most drivers are good.

I hate to see any pedestrian run over. But I know that it is incredibly dangerous to be a pedestrian or a bicyclist in Fairfax. This place is awful for people who don't want to drive each and every place. I walk, run, and ride my bike in addition to driving. I have a grocery store less than a half mile a way and really don't feel like I should be forced to drive to it.

It remindes me to try to be respectful of everyone else's safety, especially since I'm used to being menaced by jerks who can't be bothered to stop when they have the red light or to yield to pedestrians even with a big sign reminding them of the stiff penalty.

Here's an interesting letter to the editor in the MJM I saw today:

http://potomacnews.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WPN%2FMGArticle%2FWPN_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1173354085048&path=!news!opinion

about outreach to Hispanics over a recent accident (have no clue what accident but I'm sure someone can educate me)

my question is, why dont they learn to read street signs? Why dont they learn to read period? I'm sorry, although I'm sympathetic to people dying by street accidents, It's dulled a little when I find out people run right out into traffic and expect to dodge cars, the car will win no matter what. Why does anyone need to outreach to them specifically my other question?

You can teach people to read street signs, but nothing in the world is going to stop them from being stupid..other than getting hit by a car. People who cross outside of a crosswalk are sure candidates for a Darwin award.

All you have to do is read between the lines in the MJM to find illegal alien crime, all on the same page. Of course they won't say it, but the most likely source is illegal aliens:

A Manassas Park-area couple was abducted New Years Day after returning home to find two armed men inside, according to Prince William County police.

A 45-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man arrived home in the 7700 block of Pine Street around 1:30 a.m. and found to men armed with handguns who then ordered the couple to get into their pickup truck and drove off with them inside, said Officer Erika Hernandez, police spokeswoman.

Police said the captors fled more than 300 miles to Abingdon.
The captors stopped there and freed the man and woman, whose names were not released, after they convinced the men to let them go, Hernandez said.

According to police, the men then drove off in the black 2004 Toyota Tacoma with Virginia tags KJM-3865.

The couple notified local police department there, which notified Prince William police, Hernandez said. They were not injured during the incident.

Police believe the two men were former residents of the Pine Street residence who were supposed to be moved out, Hernandez said.

The abductors, whose identities police are still investigating, were apparently inside drinking and had done some destruction to the interior of the house, including smashing a big-screen TV, Hernandez said.

They were described as Hispanic men. One is between 20 and 26 years old, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and 190 pounds, police said. He was wearing a tan jacket with a red hooded sweatshirt underneath.

According to police, the other abductor is between 30 and 40 years old, approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall with a medium build and dark hair. He was wearing a gray long-sleeved shirt and dark blue jeans.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Prince William County police at 703-792-6500.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A 22-year-old Sumerduck man was injured during an armed robbery in the 8300 block of Sudley Road near Manassas around 4 a.m. Monday, said Officer Erika Hernandez, Prince William police spokeswoman.

Police said two men, one armed with a knife, demanded money.

One swung the knife at the victim, cutting one of his arms, and the two then fled with an undisclosed amount of money, Hernandez said.

The robbers were described as Hispanic men.

One was described as between 28 and 35 years old, and approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build, police said.

The other was described as between 20 and 25 years old, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and thin.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enrique Espiritu Sanchez, 43, of an unknown address in Manassas, was arrested Saturday evening after police say he broke into an acquaintance's apartment in the 7700 block of Keara Court and assaulted her, said Officer Erika Hernandez, Prince William police spokeswoman.

Sanchez is accused of breaking a glass door to the Manassas-area apartment and then attacking a 42-year-old woman, Hernandez said.

Sanchez was held without bond. His court date was not available.

————————————————————————————

Enrique Espiritu Sanchez, 43, of an unknown address in Manassas, was arrested Saturday evening after police say he broke into an acquaintance’s apartment in the 7700 block of Keara Court and assaulted her, said Officer Erika Hernandez, Prince William police spokeswoman.

Sanchez is accused of breaking a glass door to the Manassas-area apartment and then attacking a 42-year-old woman, Hernandez said.

Sanchez was held without bond. His court date was not available.

Yep, they probably are, but a woman I heard about in my hometown
got caught stealing lottery tickets in the convenience store she
worked in. When they hired her, they didnt tell her about the overhead
surveillance cameras in the ceiling over the cash register. Serious
offense in that state as tickets are state property until they are
sold. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!!!!

I could not help but think that a “tazer party” was a bunch of people sitting around zapping each other with tazers, but that would just be a bit too funny :)

That is TOO funny.....I was going to send Dolph an email about where I have been hiding via your link about the robbery and lotto tickets and then saw this one.
I love my scrathers...if you don't play, you don't win is my motto ( excuse, need to enter the 12 step program...just kidding!) :)

johnson,

you are probably on to something...it's pretty slow for day laborers at this time of year, too cold for construction and most yard work (nothing grows anyway:)

guess they have to find some other way to keep themselves busy.

When I went by the 7-11 at Sudley and Coverstone around 11am yesterday there were about 30 day workers huddled all over the place. Have not seen so many so late in the last three years I've lived here. Guess the employers might be taking the hint about the anger of the rest of us and not using as many or them.

Got to get the name of the mortgage company right beside the 7-11 where most of them were hanging out covering the entranceway/steps. Make that company aware of the day laborers congregating on their property. Saw a lot of paper wrappers and cans and bottles on the grounds as well.

WGW,

Gotta be, only they would be so retarded to cash the lottery tickets! I guess they are too stupid to know that every ticket and scratch card has a number on them. I also guess they didnt think when they robbed the joint the cops would have taken down the numbers from the tix they stole. It's only time before idiots are caught :)
