Is There A Spanish Term For “Chutzpa”?
By Greg L | 4 January 2008 | Manassas City | 27 Comments
After creating an ongoing and outrageous public nuisance at the corner of Liberty and Battle Streets in Manassas, property spokesman Gaudencio Fernandez has asked the Manassas City Planning Commission for approval to rezone this property in the Historic District from Residential to Commercial. It is yet another stunning display of contempt that this individual has shown to the residents of Manassas, and this appeal by Mr. Fernandez should rightly draw widespread public outrage.
Mr. Fernandez was in the process of converting the historic house that existed on this parcel into a boarding house for illegal aliens when it caught fire in June, 2006 according to neighbors. After leaving the deteriorating structure vacant and without adequate protection from the elements while nothing was done to repair or restore the historic structure for about a year, the property was ordered demolished. Mr. Fernandez then demolished all but one wall of the structure upon which he invited Mexicans Without Borders to place a billboard that implied that city residents are Indian killers and slavers who don’t adequately acknowledge the contributions of immigrants who “even clean your shoes.” After presenting himself as a long-term nuisance to the well being of Manassas, this guy turns around and asks that we start dismantling the city’s Historic African-American district through rezonings so he can be financially rewarded for his persistent intransigence.
Wow, has this guy got some big ones, or what?
The planning commission will hold a public hearing on this, and if they ultimately recommend that the City Council approve this rezoning request, it will come up before the Manassas City Council. That would be an interesting meeting, which would give every resident of Manassas and surrounding areas an opportunity to express their outrage over this continuing tragic comedy, and tell Mr. Fernandez exactly what they think of his behavior and the prospect that it should be rewarded. I’m sure it would be rather well attended.
Mr. Fernandez might feel that he can bully Manassas into acceding to his request just as a means of putting a halt to these outrages, but doing so vastly underestimates the city’s forbearance of those who would bully them. This has been attempted far too frequently, and I think Manassas residents are fed up with this tactic. If they slap down this outrageous request, it should discourage any further attempts by some to make themselves an unbearable nuisance and then try to bargain for favorable treatment in exchange for a promise of future responsible behavior.
This isn’t going to play in Manassas. No way.

I believe the term would be “Cajones”, and this guy has a set of brass ones.
Ya beat me to it, Batson. A friend of mine had dealings with Sr. Fernandez, who was working on the plumbing in his home. He is, indeed, a piece of work. Perhaps a boycott of his business is in order?
You can’t really blame the Senor–he’s gotten his way so far what with illegals doing whatever they want whenever and where ever then want.
Sr. Fernandez shouldn’t be touching ANYTHING to do with plumbing[1]

Yeah we need to stop these people from expressing views which counter ours.
More like huevos rather than brass, IMHO.
Anon,
While I lend about as much need to Anonymous posts as I do used toilet tissue, I will go against my basic rule of responding to anons and tell you this isn’t about censorship, it is about a person that has broken the law and is getting away with it.
Come up with a name / handle so you can be recognized properly.
Again we are slapped in the face by this guy. How many times do we accept it before we get tired of going back to allow him to thumb his nose at us again? I hope the council decides against it and can stick to their guns. If not, I am sure elections will help weed out the apologists.
El grande cajones!
Don’t you think that rezoning was the plan all along when the house “accidentally” burned down?
Apparently, there was a good bit of insurance involved as well. Must be one of those cultural (?) traits that we value so much. “Here, read my racially offensive sign while I stab you in the back!”
This guy has been getting away with this sign for a long time now so it’s obvious to me that the Manassas city council has no desire to take him on. I see this as another failure in local city government for letting this travesty go on as long as it has. If they ‘really’ wanted to slap this guys wrists then they would have already done it. If it were some white dude with a sign claiming that all Hispanics are racist then the sign would have been dealt with a long time ago. I see this failure to act as nothing else but white apologists with weak knees and no stomach. I hope the council is reading this as well.
park’d -
I agree with you 100%, particularly with “If it were some white dude with a sign claiming that all Hispanics are racist then the sign would have been dealt with a long time ago.”
You are absolutely correct. We are being discriminated against, and once again, there is a blatant double standard being applied.
Enough of this PC crap - and let’s get on with it ! Do you hear us, City Council? Enough already!
I wonder if he has used e-verify?
Where’s a chunk of blue ice falling from the sky when you need it….to crush this bill board. Oh well…there’s always tomorrow…..
Where is the Kelo decision when you need it? While I am vehemently against the seizure of private property by government and subsequent transfer to another private citizen, and think the Supreme Court should reverse itself on this, this might be one time that it would serve a useful purpose until it gets overturned.
Glad to see that BVBL is on board to perserve Manassas Historic African American districts. Didn’t know he has such sensabilities since he has never been a proponent of such efforts before. Glad to have you join us on perserving minority enclaves in Manassas.
I think the government should be able to seize private property of not only illegal aliens, but also legal residents who “aid and abet”. Just imagine a legal resident losing his/her house and cars and everything for housing illegals in a bunk house. That would send a clear message to those thinking of doing the same thing. Sorry folks, but we need to start getting tough on this issue.
This guy really doesn’t like that sign.
I am glad that some Liberty St. residents came and spoke about the historic nature of the street. I don’t believe the City needs a multi-use building on that site. Am I the only one who was not surprised that the house burned in the first place? I drive by the lot every day. For years I noticed that when the house was standing, there were electric cords that extended out of the upper windows into the lower windows. I remarked more than once to my husband “There’s a building code violation.” No one who works for the City noticed these cords? The cords were on the side of the home that faced Pr William St. If the owner has a business that is capable of repairing the home’s deficits, why didn’t he do so?

Makes you wonder doesn’t it?
“f the owner has a business that is capable of repairing the home’s deficits, why didn’t he do so?”
His business is not licensed to do electrical or plumbing work, as I noted above.
Mr. Hernandez is not illegal and just because he feels compelled to bring forth a different view does not invite him to be arrested.
I have said this before, and here I’ll say it again.
Several months ago the Manassas City Council was addressed by several interested parties from Liberty Street asking that the house be restored rather than demolished. The MC Council did not listen!
Following that MCC meeting, I personally spoke with several residents who are close neighbors to that property. They all said the same thing, that it was their belief that the fire was arson and an insurance fraud case.
They told me exactly what the plans were for the property and so far everything they said has been correct! Remember, this was months ago!
Further, I have also been told that there is an (un-named) attorney in Manassas City who has already agreed to purchase an office building on that property, should one come to be constructed there.
This, I believe, was the plan all along!
Much more profit in this than to continue to run a boarding house (for illegals) that is falling apart.
The residents I spoke with said that a few days before the fire, Uhaul trucks arrived and all contents were removed from the house, all occupants were moved out, then days later about 0500 on June 18, 2006 a man stood at a front door across the street saying that there was a fire (in Spanish)! That neighbor / resident made the call to 911.
There are some good pictures on the Manassas VFD website. It is evident that this placed the lives of many people in jeopardy.

I could go on about this but what good would it do?
Please show up at any hearings or MCC meetings that have to do with this property. Let’s get rid of this cancer.
Archie,
Holy smoke, that is interesting ……
Archie,
I’ve always thought arson/insurance fraud. It all just does NOT
add up.
Redawn, we should go. Manassas City welcomes those natives from the county unlike Manassas Park. Although, I find the “unamed” wanting to purchase the property for office space
is pretty SCARY. Think about it.
I am FED UP with these people buying up properties, trashing them (or making them disappear by fire or demo) and then abandoning them - what a blight!
Was this fire ever investigated as arson?
