Manassas GOP Council Candidates
By Greg L | 12 January 2008 | Manassas City | 33 Comments
The filing deadline has elapsed, and now the slate of candidates running for the Republican nomination for Manassas City Council has been finalized. Running for the three spots on City Council that are up for election are:
- Jonathan Way, the councilman who was appointed to fill the seat of Jackson Miller
- Steve Smith, an incumbent who’s adherence to Republican values is reminiscent of the behavior of Russ Potts
- David Core, a strong conservative and active Help Save Manassas member
- Maureen Wood, Legislative Director of Help Save Manassas and candidate for council in 2006
- Mark Wolfe, father of deceased war hero Colin Wolfe who sought appointment to fill Jackson Miller’s vacant seat
This is a tremendous list of candidates, and all but Steve Smith would make a fine choice here. The nominees will be selected in a convention that will be held two weeks from today.

Maureen would do an excellent job serving her community. Maureen is very dedicated to what ever task she sets out to get accomplished. She will devote the time, effort and energy needed to be effective.
Steve is a “local boy” and son of Judge Selwyn Smith. This does give him a strong upperhand.(IMHO) I know you folks that have been around less than 15-20 years don’t seem to get what a “powerful thing” this can be. This was once a “small town”, and there are still a lot of “old timers” around here alive and doing well.
Good luck Maureen!
Maureen is very conscientious and dedicated. If I lived in the City of Manassas, she would have my vote.
Good luck Maureen!
It seems as though we are unusually lucky in Manassas with regard to our choices for elected office. Even if you disagree with the politics of one of these candidates, there is no doubt in my mind that each and every one of them has the best interest of the City at heart.
This is not always the case and when it isn’t, bad things usually happen.
All,
Thank you for your kind words. I will do what is best for the city. That has been my goal since I moved here 22 years ago and always will be. I want to help others and running for Council is an extension of that.
I would encourage registered voter’s who have a vested interest in Manassas, to sign up as delegates and go to the Republican Convention on January 26th.
Maureen,
Please, let me know what I can do to help you. I wish ALL THE BEST!
Maureen,
I wish you success as you have worked SO hard for the community, even outside of the city.
With this slate I sure hope the Dems come up with someone who can win. I am afraid after the zelots get their way at the convention the imcumbants will be on the sideline and the city will start heading downhill in a hurry.
Maureen: I live in the City, so if I can help, let me know.
ddpdrinker,
We need to get those we know in the city to go to the convention. Maureen would sure have my vote if I lived in the City limits.
Good Luck Maureen.
Any word on the school board? They do spend most of the tax dollars.
Maureen and Dave and maybe Wolfe get my vote, the incumbants have not done enough to earn my vote.
Does anybody know anything about Maureen’s education? Just curious what her degree is in.
Steve Smith will get my vote. He is a man of reason and thought. All the other candidates are only interested in one issue. A single minded candidate is not what the City of Manassas needs. Maureen Wood has run three or four times. There must be reasons she has never been elected. As far as her education-I do not believe she has a degree. You might want to ask her if she finished high school, received a GED or if she has any higher studies.
Dave nor Maureen will ever get my vote or the vote of anyone in my family. We will also discourage anyone we know from voting for either of them.
OH NO!!!!!!!!! No only would the City be headed downhill, the City will be paying lawyers to defend it. Having any of them in office is a scary proposition.
FHL(MY A$$),
Maureen is not a single issue candidate. You have a single issue mind. Always, looking for a way to bash anyone that is not not falling over backwards to accomodate the illegals.
YOU are the “SCARY ONE”.
Smith is the only council member that voted no on ICE training. Smith represents illegals in his law practice. Smith voted yes to spend 100K of city money to fix up some old ladies house who doesn’t even live in the city. Look what his advanced degrees did for him. Go Maureen.
FHL,
If someone supports criminals, they are dumber then a pile of rocks regardless of the degree they may have.
Maureen I believe has high school diploma and was or is a clerk at Giant. I was for spending the money on the house in Old Town. The City either needs to spend the money or continue the law suit it started on the owner. What are they going to do when th next person who is cited by the City refuses to comply with an order. My understanding is she was all ready ordered to fix it and has not. Weather you like him or not, Steve Smith is the one that is a level head and asks questions. Every Council needs one, all though I don’t always agree with him. I don’t know enough about Wolfe and Core but can’t wait to hear from them. I like what Maureen has done on the sidelines but I just can’t bring myself to vote for her. She is just a little brash for me plus she is more important on the sidelines and it suits her well. No way on Way, he just doesn’t seem to get it and seem a little discombobulated (sp?).
I am not a voter in Manassas City, but I will say that I always look for professional or military experience and a college education as preferred qualifications in a candidate. That shouldn’t preclude anyone from running, but I can’t imagine voting for someone without substantial experience. Giant and a GED wouldn’t do, though I have to believe that if Ms. Wood is running, her experience is more substantial than that.
Anon,
Well then it is a good thing that you are not a voter. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand the issues facing the City. Illegals, high taxes, and a worsening quality of life.
CitizenofManassas,
You are exactly right. I was just saying to my husband earlier those very words. Hard work, dedication, committment, and thoughtfulness, and an understanding of OUR community are what’s needed.(IMHO)
Lafayette,
You are right. Maureen and Dave for that matte, fit all of those descriptions.
My wife and I will be voting for Maureen and Dave on January 26 (those who want to vote in the convention need to register by 5 p.m. on January 18). Both Maureen and Dave are comitted conservatives. Both supported the Marriage Amendment. Maureen has been involved in making the City of Manassas a better place for years. Maureen has served on the advisory board of the Department of Social Services (now known as the Department of Family Services) and was Chair of the advisory board for a year. Mauren now sits on a city board that deals with at-risk youth. She has demonstrated compassion for the disadvantaged and at the same time works hard as a board member and the legislative director of Help Save Manassas to deal realistically with the influx of illegal immigrants in our area.
Maureen has demonstrated that she has a passion for service to our community. My wife and I cannot think of a better qualification of election to the City Council.
Those who want to get Maureen elected need to register to attend the Republican convention. Here is a link for the delegate form:

We hope all of you who want to see change in the way things are done in Manassas will register to attend the convention and vote for change.
I will be voting for John Way, Dave Core and Maureen Wood. I don’t mean to slight Mr. Wolf, but I don’t recall his being involved in the local party, and beyond his seeking appointment to the Council to fill out Miller’s seat, I know very little about his politics. Here’s why I am voting for these individuals:
John Way: From what I can tell, Mr. Way is a fiscal conservative, who brings a great deal of experience to the budget process. He is concerned about stalling economic development, and wants to encourage redevelopment of some of our blighted areas. He is for doing everything legally permissible to discourage illegals from living in the city, supports 287G, zoning enforcement, and makiing contractors verify the legal status of their employees, if they want to do business with the City. He is thoughtful and deliberate in his actions.
Dave Core: Solid conservative credentials. Knows the issues. Passionate about illegal immigration. ’nuff said.
Maureen Wood: I beleive would be one of the most hardworking and dedicated City Councilmen. Her community leadership has been underrated by her detractors. SHe knows how to get things done.
I have already said that I wouldn’t vote for Mr. Wolfe, because I know nothing about him. I won’t vote for Steve Smith for the opposite reason. I know where he stands on the issues that matter to me, and he is 180 degrees out from where I am. Spending, Taxs, Illegal Immigration, Community Development…if there is a vote on one of these issues, I can count on Steve Smith to vote for everything I am against, and against everything that I am for.
I agree w/ Batson re: Councilman Way. Way has proven that he is committed to improving the City. I’m voting to keep him on council as I feel that he does “get it” on the issues I find to be important, i.e. illegal immigration, neighborhood blight, and economic development. Councilman Way is very qualified to lead and, having had the opportunity to do so on council, has proven himself to be worthy of re-election.
“Does anybody know anything about Maureen’s education? Just curious what her degree is in.”
JimmyV, do sound principles, commonsense, 10 years of community service and being hard-working and dedicated to fighting for the community at large have any connection of reason with you that she may be more qualified than those who have degree after degree hanging from their belts??
Bayberry resident- the NO WAY for Manassas City Council bumper stickers are in. And how many would you like??
Bayberry resident- the NO WAY for Manassas City Council bumper stickers are in. And how many would you like??
And Batson D. Belfrey, since you are a supporter of John Way, you’ll want to get the spelling of his name nailed down. JON WAY AKA JONATHAN WAY. You may want to check out his Planning Commission record and you might retract your support!
Silverfox,
Just as long as his name is spelled right on the ballot, that’s all that really matters, eh?
I am not voting for planning commission. I am voting for councilman. I had never heard of him until he sought appointment, nor was he the one I had hoped the council would pick. However, he has impressed me ever since, and that is what I am voting for.
But, I agree 100% with your comments about Wood. She will work hard, has a lot of practical experience, and has demonstrated that she can get things done. Steve Smith has a law degree, and I wouldn’t vote for him to lead my homeowners association, let alone council. He hasn’t taken the lead on anything, pushed any initiatives, etc. All he has done was piss me off with his contrarian votes.
“Does anybody know anything about Maureen’s education? Just curious what her degree is in.”
I am a huge fan of “hands on over textbook” training-any day.
Aside from Mr. Wolfe’s lack of political experience, the ballet group that he is involved in has been known to hire foreign dancers without visas or legal work permits. From what I understand, the group then files for visas yet continues to employ the dancers despite their status while they wait for the INS decision. Since he says he’s against illegal immigration, that sounds pretty hypocritical to me. Even though I’m undecided about my vote (between Wood, Core, and Way) I’ll be considering someone with experience that addresses the issues facing the City today. (They’ve already been mentioned several times-immigration, zoning, budget, etc.)
