Thompson Withdraws

By RHarrison | 22 January 2008 | National Politics | 45 Comments

Fred Thompson gave the following statement an hour or so ago:

“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”  Thompson did not endorse anyone, despite his friendship with McCain.

Fred Thompson appeared to me to be a good man who would have been a good president.  But he was not a good candidate.  His campaign started late, never had enough money and was poorly organized.  Still, he added to the debate, created some very funny commercials (mostly for the web) and impressed many of us with his straight forward approach to communicating.

The Presidential race is now down to four credible candidates: McCain, Romney, Giuliani and Huckabee.  I would place their chances of winning in that order.  Huckabee is fading fast, has little money and no way to raise more.  Giuliani is going to be in trouble if he doesn’t do well in Florida, where polls have him second or third.  Only McCain and Romney appear well positioned for the long-term.  Let’s see how McCain’s support holds up when there aren’t four candidates splitting the mainstream Republican and conservative vote.

No, Ron Paul is not a credible candidate.  He gets a fairly consistent 8% to 10% of the vote, but does not have real strength anywhere.

    Hello Fred Thompson Supporters,

I am a Ron Paul supporter, formally a Fred Thompson supporter. I wanted to invite everyone hear to check out Ron Paul. You may not agree with him on all the issues, I don’t. But, he is very similar to Thompson in many ways. Both are very honest and say what they mean.

Now that Thompson has stepped out and Duncan Hunter stepped out on Saturday, Paul is the only fiscal and moral conservative left.

McCain, Huck, and Romney are spenders and Rudy is all over the map morally.

Please check out Ron Paul’s site. He isn’t Fred Thompson, but he is a real conservative. The only one left in this race.

Fred definitely was the best candidate, but, like I said before, it’s tough getting out of bed in the morning when you got a wife that looks like his in there with you. The converse would explain the Huckabuster’s energy and exuberance.

    mnd,

If you are speaking about Romney, I will refer you to a post I made a while back. He has people that take care of those things. He is ultimately responsible, but I am sure the contractor that won the bid to do the landscaping of the Gov’s house didn’t tell them he was hiring ILLEGAL aliens. This comes back around to punishing the people that hire them, not the ones that hire those who hire the ILLEGALS.

Did you see my comments about CEMEX and Rinker and Cuba on the other thread?

    - I think McCain is volitile - I think he would make wild VP for any President that could handle him. I really want someone that is going to call a spade a spade - I think I don’t LIKE anyone but am trying to find something good….. I am focused on the economy first. That must be in order to accomplish anything. Think it’s best to see what falls out and then take a stand. I liked Dodd I liked Tancredo and I liked Huckabee. They each had a stand and qualities I liked. Then it all changed. Never liked Guiliani - not even after 9/11. :)

Why would One Voice vote for Hillary? She has never mentioned her in any favorable light. I would be much more likely to support her than One Voice would. And before anyone starts on me, I have not decided who I am going to vote for and when I do, this place will be the last place it will be discussed. There are things I like about all the candidates, and things I do not like about all of them.

Fred was a great choice but he really didn’t market himself well. I really think Romney is the best out there. Each candidate has their pros and cons but Romney really has the “turnaround” agent feel that the others don’t.

I can’t get passed McCain as part of the old school and Huck doesn’t register with me at all.

Romney seems to have a good business mind which will lend itself well to accounability and followthrough. Check him out “on the issues”, especially immigration and economy if you have a moment and see if he fits for you. Just my 2 cents.

The only candidate that I see out there with new ideas is Huckabee. He has great plans on Health Care, Fair Tax, Immigration, and on lots of social issues.

Here’s a good description of Ron Paul’s supporters:

It’s hard to think of a presidential candidate who’s ever drawn a
coalition as broad as Ron Paul’s. At any Paul event, you’re likely to run into self-described anarcho-capitalists, 9/11-deniers, antiwar lefties, objectivists, paleocons, hemp activists, and geeky high school kids, along with tax resisters, conspiracy nuts, and acolytes of Murray Rothbard. And those are just the ones it’s possible to categorize. It’s hard to say what they all have in common, except that every one is an ideological minority–or, as one of them put it to me, “open-minded people.” To these supporters, Paul is a folk hero, the one person in national politics who doesn’t judge them, who
understands what it’s like to be considered a freak by straight
    society.

Here’s Ron Paul getting cozy with Dennis Kucinich (!) and 9/11 conspiracy nuts.

Student: …we’ve heard that you have questioned the government’s official account.

Paul: Well, I never automatically trust anything the government does when they do an investigation because too often I think there’s an area that the government covered up, whether it’s the Kennedy assassination or whatever.

    Paul: Into 9/11?

Student: Yeah, into 9/11. I mean, if it was Dennis Kucinich and you, there’d be congressional support. You know what I mean? So you wouldn’t be the only one.

Paul: It’d be bipartisan, too. And I’ve worked with Dennis a lot on a lot of these issues.

Student: So I mean, would you advocate for a new investigation into 9/11?

Paul: Yes, I think we have to look at the details of it.

    Ducky,

    Your grasping at straws.

Paul has been on many shows, and in the debates he has very clearly stated he does not think there was a government conspiracy in 9/11. He stated that was a rediculous notion and a rediculous question to even ask him. He stated his supporters (even the 9/11 “truthers”) like him for his positions, not vice versa. He only stated that there was some government incompetence, because the FBI knew that people were learning to fly but not land.

    OK?

Toad and mnd - can you explain why Tancrado has endorsed Romney?

Romney is the only candidate who has actually signed 287g legislation.

He is also the best (by far) candidate when it comes to the economy.

He only one to be very successful in the private sector.

Even as Gov. of Mass. he didnt raise taxes - unlike the massive tax increases by Huckabee’s Governorship.

But unlike most that seem to post on this site, I like and generally support all of the Republican candidates. I just prefer Romney and think he is by far the most qualified to lead our nation.

    Read this:

    Tough Guy on Immigration?
    November 9, 2007

Romney claims he put state troopers on the trail of illegals in his state.

Romney: As governor, I authorized the state police to enforce immigration laws.

Well, yes. But, as we noted in August, he didn’t do so until he had less than a month left in his term. He was already considering running for president, and the new governor-elect was expected to rescind the arrangement.

Romney began talking about giving troopers the power to make arrests on immigration charges earlier in 2006, but he didn’t sign an agreement with the federal government - a necessary condition for that authority to be granted - until Dec. 13 of that year. Romney was scheduled to leave office Jan. 4, 2007. Democrat Deval Patrick, who had won the race to succeed Romney, had already said the program was a “bad idea” because troopers were busy enough as it was.

Sure enough, Patrick rescinded the agreement within his first week in office so troopers could “focus on enforcing Massachusetts laws.” The policy never had a chance to take effect, because those troopers chosen to carry it out hadn’t yet begun a required six-week training course.

Romney isn’t a conservative. Period. At least with the leftist Democrats you know what you’re getting. Further, I’m not going to support or vote for a Republican who says stuff like this:

“And if there is determined to be, from time to time, a weapon of such lethality that it poses a grave risk to our law enforcement personnel, that’s something I would consider signing. There’s nothing of that nature that’s being proposed today in Washington. But, but I would, I would look at weapons that pose extraordinary lethality”

I don’t know about you, but a gun isn’t much use if it doesn’t “pose a grave risk” to whomever its pointed at.

“Weapons of extraordinary lethality” my ass. The man is talking about the stupid “assault weapons ban”.

You know, the one that had no effect on crime?

Tell me how Romney could be elected in the most liberal state in the USA if he is so conservative. While he was Gov. he did nothing to fight Gay Marrage, Gun Control, and Abortion. IN his state it is a Fellony to own a gun without paying a fee and being registered. In His state some abortions are payed for with tax dollars. Show me where he stood up to this. Any true Republican would be outraged. He is just anouther left leaning GOP contender who would be happy to take a few more of our God given rights away. Toad,

You dont know what your talking about.

Paul earmarks the spending in case the bill passes, but he almost always votes against the spending bill itself. He does the earmarking because if the bill does pass he doesnt want his constituency not to get its fair share of money that it sends to Washington.

Unlike most other politicians Ron Paul lets people see his earmarks. You really should focus your ire on those who dont reveal their earmarks, as those are likely the unethical ones and dont want people examining their actions.
