Kiddie Porn Is OK When Government Does It

By Greg L | 6 February 2008 | Rack & Roll Scandal, Crime | 19 Comments

While the MJM reports on a man pleading guilty to viewing child pornography, it continues to ignore that the City of Manassas Park is still sitting on top of evidence that former Vice-Mayor and current Planning Commission member Kevin Brendel actually produced child pornography.  Although Brendel’s intent wasn’t to commercially distribute the pictures he staged, but to manufacture evidence which would implicate local businessman David Ruttenberg in running an establishment that was a public nuisance, producing these pictures was unlawful.  No effort to investigate this crime by law enforcement has been initiated, and reporters have displayed no interest in covering this story.

It’s amazing what crimes you can get away with these days when the local governing body directs you to commit them.  It’s fascinating that city attorney Dean Crowhurst can admit to all of this during a televised Governing Board meeting, and not a question is raised.  But it’s deeply disturbing that the product of this criminal act, and the conspiracy among elected officials which produced it actually worked.  When it has served the interests, the city has used these pictures to convince recalcitrant public officials to deny permits to Ruttenberg, even while it has rebuffed requests in court to provide this evidence to Ruttenberg so he could answer the allegations against him.  In small localities, protections afforded to citizens under the United States Constitution are only effective when they do not conflict with the interests of public officials.

This is especially the case when the local media displays no interest in holding these elected officials to account.  What are the chances that if you produced child pornography, the MJM would do anything but run the story on the front page?

If someone really does have this ‘evidence’ then I implore them to send copies of it to every newspaper in the area to run as a top story. Get a binder with all this ‘evidence’ that the MP govt. has done such a thing and then get it distributed to the right channels and I’m sure that any reporter would love to break the story. Until such time that I see this binder of evidence in front of me then I have to take this story as hearsay. Have you seen this binder full of evidence which implicates Brendel and the other top officials Greg? Why does only MP have this evidence and if so how would you even know that it ACTUALLY exists unless you had seen a copy of it yourself? If I had seen it then I would have made copies of it and made sure that the proper officials and media been informed and stayed on top of keeping the heat on MP. I suspect that you and I are a lot alike which begs me to ask why none of this has been done if such evidence really does exist.

I attended a briefing on “Alicia’s Law” this morning, I was stunned to learn that Manassas and Woodbridge are in the top 15 sites in the state for the reciept and transmission of child pornography, law enforcement was there and pleaded for more resources, they indicated that there are an esitmated 12,000 children in VA who are being exploited sexually through online videos and pictures, some involving rape of children as young as 3. There are some real sickos in our communities. I was appalled that a recent arrest was of a minister and a school teacher involved in pre-teen castration. This is sickening, we should give law enforcement all the resources required to end this, if it takes $100 million or $200 million or more we should absolutely spend the money, raise taxes if necessary.

Park’d, the pictures in question are apparently in the possession of someone working for Manassas Park.

In the deposition, Brendel’s lawyer would not allow him to admit that he took the pictures. Now why do you suppose that would be?

If Kevin “city hall needs a new roof so let’s build a new one” Brendel had any integrity at all he’d resign his position on the Planning Commission.

But he doesn’t, so he won’t.

Just like he wouldn’t resign his positjon as GOP committee chair till he was removed from that position. He’s still playing games, refusing to give the list of committee members to the new chair, Bill Wren.

But Brendel really isn’t the problem here–more like the symptom. A symptom of a deep, serious problem within Manassas Park.

I have always felt that “baiting” is just as great a crime itself as those who take the bait, and causes even more criminals than would otherwise be tempted to “go for the bait” by increasing the popularity of the crime, by its very introduction and production of the criminal artifact.

I feel the same way about drugs, cigarettes and financial scams.

Far better in my humble opinion, to simply seek out and destroy the criminals who commit crimes of their own devices and with each other, until they are caught. I would support better intelligence collection, not craftiness of tricks.

This wasn’t “baiting” Michael…it was pure “setup!” Why do you think that they won’t release the pictures? Perhaps because Dave Ruttenberg wasn’t there when they were taken? Perhaps because there was no proof that anyone BUT Kevin Brendel was involved.

I understand that there are actually some young ladies, who were minors at the time, who have sworn to having been solicited by Brendel to allow him to take “photos” in his basement while his wife was out of town. Does this sound like “bait”…or like someone who is scrambling to try to save his own glutious maximus.

    Park’d,

    Well said.

Your questions can be answered. Although, a public forum is not appropriate today. The evidence exists, and strangely enough, it is in a binder. Perhaps you should ask Brendel how pics that incriminate him and soley resided on his personal computer became the property of MPPD and the City Attorney. Of course, he retains his position as Vice-Mayor for 2 more years.

Would you like to see for yourself? Contact the administrator at BVBL.

Remember, the city govt, courts, and the local press will always tend to protect respected officials and police if they can. The small businessman is expendable.

They all have to work along side each other tomorrow. …and favors are expeceted and/or owed.

I don’t know where you guys grew up, but every newspaper reporter or writer that I can think of would salivate at the chance to print this story, assuming it actually holds water. If a city executive is dealing in blackmail, setups and kiddy porn then I’m sure it would be a hot story. Just sending this binder to the FBI should suffice, assuming that the MPPD and the State Police are unwilling to do their jobs. They too should then be taken to task for failing to investigate such blatant law breaking and an investigation should then be undertaken within their ranks to determine who was covering it up. Send it to Lou Dobbs or O’Reilly if you have it. A binder full of evidence like this - assuming that it exists, should be a slam dunk. Me thinks it is more like a binder full of hearsay, innuendos and pictures of fully clothed 17 year old girls smiling at the camera with innocent poses. If it were anything more then the lid would have blown off of this ’story’ long ago imo.

No, you don’t get it Park’d. As soon as the city got those photos Kevin Brendel started doing exactly as he was told. If those photos got out Brendel would no longer do that. So the only time that binder will ever see the light of day is when Brendel messes up too bad. (I think this might be called “blackmail”?)

Well my point is that if MP always had those pics and that evidence in its possession then how would anyone other than them know about it? If anyone else had gotten their hands on it then they would have made copies. I know I would have. It makes for pretty poor blackmail when the public already knows that the evidence exists. The idea of blackmailing someone is to prevent the information from ever seeing the light of day in the first place. I still see this story as an old wives’ tale. There are too many people that ‘know’ about this story for it to ever be anything but hearsay. Call the media, police, federal government or any of the NUMEROUS national organizations out there for abused children and I guarantee you that something will be done. Show me the evidence.

“Well my point is that if MP always had those pics and that evidence in its possession then how would anyone other than them know about it?”

Evidence that these photos exist is in Kevin Brendel’s deposition. As I stated above. Kevin Brendel’s lawyer would not let Kevin Brendel answer the question as to whether Kevin Brendel took these photos. Also as I stated above.

“I still see this story as an old wives’ tale.”

Well, as I said in a previous post, the city attorney, Dean Crowhurst, stated that the nude photos that were taken contain “possibly underage” girls. You could have heard this yourself, in person, had you gone to the public hearing but you didn’t so you’ll just have to rely on my word.

“Possibly underage”? They are either underage or not. I think if there’s any possibility that they are underage then it should be determined for sure whether that is the case.

Either Dean Crowhurst is a liar and these girls are not underage and he knows it OR he knows there is a strong possibility that they are underage and therefore is not reporting a possible crime, which I believe is crime unto itself.

All of about 5 people bothered to show up to that public hearing so you know what I think the problem is here?

Apathy. Nobody cared too much about the $33 million elementary school, nobody cared too much about Kevin Brendel running the Republican Committee like a fiefdom, nobody cared too much about their taxes more than doubling in 5 years, etc.

So it stands to reason that nobody would care too much about this, either.

I don’t know what it will take to make people care. My theory is that it’s been too easy to just pack up and move (like Adam Larson did) instead of trying to do something about the problem.

Incidentally, I was told that the reason Kevin Brendel acted like a crybaby after he lost the election is that he was worried about legal problems relating to something he did. I will not identify the person who told me that, suffice it to say that they are directly involved in city business. I was not given any more details than that, other than that this person did believe that Kevin was overreacting.

I can only wonder if there’s a connection between this and that.

(The person who told me this did claim they did not know Kevin Brendel was a DJ at RnR, so maybe Brendel has a couple of skeletons in the closet).

There aren’t that many in town left to care! 80% of the town is Hispanic/illegal and just want to stay unnoticed and want the status quo to remain. Being a city executive here must be the best gig in town. Do whatever you want because you know the town will never say a word because they are all breaking the law themselves. Sweet gig if you can get it.

Did you happen to catch the story in the MJM where they’re talking about having to raise taxes because of the lowered assessments?

They have a “hiring freeze”. Oh boy–a hiring freeze. How about STOP SPENDING MONEY. WE DO NOT NEED A NEW CITY HALL.

I almost get the impression that these cretins are TRYING to bankrupt the city.

What get-rich-quick scheme do they have cooked up this time? Since ABC homes and the OTB fell through. One can only wonder…

Don’t bet your life on that SiT. If there’s one univeral constant I’ve discovered in life is that corruption 9/10 of the time is covered up. Only when it is so blatant that the public is outraged or the corruptor has pissed off someone in his circle of fellow corruptors will it ever see the light of day. Brendel will skate, especially in this town. I thought they already raised RE taxes anyway from $1.14 to $1.35 or somewhere along those lines? My house has lost 100+K of equity so far and is still dropping. I’ve got an ARM resetting in 13 months and am worried about refinancing now because the area is dropping so badly. Banks are loathe to refinance homes that are in areas that have experienced the worst drops in value. Bad times ahead for this city all because they allowed an army of illegal invaders to come in and buy homes that they couldn’t afford. We will end up paying for their corruption two-fold in high taxes and drastically reduced property values. Grrr.

I don’t know who “MP Resident” is (could even be David) but he is right about the Brendel deposition. I know, I was there. The pictures were there as well but the City convinced the court to subject the pictures to a protective order. David’s then lawyer was allowed to see them, but David was not.

There is no question about the pictures existence and there is no question that Brendel took the pictures. Brendel was taking pictures all the time. David has pictures Brendel took that show RNR patrons just having fun. He gave these to David to show David that what he was doing was “innocent.” The lewd pictures, however, are a different story. They were taken in direct violation of David’s policy against such practice.

Evidence exists, including Brendel’s deposition, testimony under oath by David, recorded conversations with witnesses and ex RNR employees as well as women and girls that Brendel approached and in some cases photographed in his own basement, that Brendel orchestrated this farce and that David opposed it and stopped it when he was aware that it was going on. And for god-sakes, common sense indicates this as well. Brendel didn’t give a damn about the business or David. He was just out for young women. David worked for 20 year to build RNR and had his life invested in it. He knew that off-color antics in a conservative Virignia community would risk all. He wanted people to come in and have a good time. He worked hard at that. He knew off-color antics would give people ammunition against him. That was suicide. He didn’t want that; he didn’t want to turn off the community.

On March 19th the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit will hear oral argument in Ruttenberg v. Jones. A few months after that, the 4th Circuit will make its decision. If David wins, the case will go back for trial in the Eastern District. Discovery will be allowed and David will go after all these pictures as well as every bit of evidence about Brendel’s activity and the City’s collusion with Brendel (isn’t it imnteresting that the City wants to destroy David, who is innocent, but keeps its relationship with Brendel who is a disgrace). That evidence, along with a mountain of other evidence proving that certain MP officials fabricated evidence and perjured themselves in order to deprive David of his 20 years of effort, will be presented to a Federal jury. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the real importance of all this and I couldn’t care less what happens to that creep Brendel.

As far as what happens to Brendel, it would be great if he became what is known as an “example”–someone punished severely to demonstrate to others engaged in the same deceit and corruption that they too are facing serious trouble. I think 10 years in a Federal pen would be good for Brendel. Don’t drop the soap!
