...and that's only the FEDERAL cost. I can well imagine what the local and state cost would add to that!

Now, to estimate what would happen if illegals got legal status, we assume that illegals, if given this green card, they would begin to pay taxes and use services, like households headed by legal immigrants, with the same characteristics in terms of educational attainment. We also control for whether the household is from Mexico.

So what did we find? Looking first at households headed by illegal aliens, we found that they paid on average $4,200 a year to the federal government for a total of about $16 billion a year in 2002 -- certainly not a trivial sum. However, we also found that they imposed costs on the federal government of nearly $7,000 a year, or $26.3 billion. This means that the net fiscal deficit created by illegal households was $10.4 billion, or $2,700 per household. Put differently, illegal aliens imposed $10.4 billion more in costs than they paid in taxes.

Monticup: What's the dollar figure on the "net loss" ? Most of the data I've seen show a significant net surplus on the economic impact of illegal immigration. That doesn't mean that we don't need comprehensive federal immigration reform (we all really want a situation where all immigration is legal and regulated), but your comment is a bit of an anomaly in asserting that we're disadvantaged economically by illegal immigration.

I'm not a McCainite, but his birthplace issue has hardly been ignored. It has been asked and answered. He's fine, thanks to the 1790 First Congress.

See, for example, http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=1099

It was also dealt with back in 1998 by the Post. Feel free to stop scanning the skies for black helicopters. And those aluminum hats probably won't do you any good either.

I did know that McCain was born in Panama, while his father was in the military. I wondered why this wasn't brought up, since I have two children born abroad, under similar circumstances and always thought that this would need to be resolved if someone in a like situation ever decided to run for POTUS. That this is being ignored has my radar up.

"they're watching us!" Understatement. Of course we're being watched, recorded and tracked. The SPP has scheduled a meeting for April, 2008 hosted in New Orleans.

We must stop the squabbling and not get distracted with the details of illegal aliens but stay focused on the issue of illegal aliens. www.StopSPP.com. Track them!!

You may be interested in knowing that a state legislator in Utah has introduced a resolution encouraging the U.S. to withdraw from the Security Prosperity Partnership of North America and any other bilateral activity that would move the country toward an EU-style continental merger.

And, I've learned John McCain was born aboard a U.S. naval ship in the Panama Canal making him 'not' U.S. born disqualifying him for the Office of the President. Anyone out there know about this?

Pat Herve: Do you know how much of our economy goes to supporting medical care, food stamps, education, law enforcement, etc. for illegal aliens?
It is a net LOSS for the US. Deport all illegal aliens. We will adjust.

Anonymous at 12:00: Ducky wants MORE illegal aliens. I wonder why?

There are many illegal immigrants that are paying the same taxes as you and I. Do they pay property taxes - only if they own their homes - otherwise they rent - just like you and I.

If they are not paying taxes, well then they must be getting paid in cash - this should be fixed. I always wonder - how does a contractor get enough cash every week to pay his workers - how does that work out. If I withdraw $10k, it gets reported to the feds - how come the irs does not look into a company that withdraws $10's of thousands in cash every week.

Secondly - why do we employ the contractor that hires the illegals? WE are paying for those illegals to be here. It is time that WE take on the responsibility of bringing the illegals here - have you ever paid cash for a job to save a few bucks? Well, that is getting around the system (taxes) so that the use of illegal labor can continue.

Be careful of what you ask for, you might get it...
Should we deny medical care to illegals - sick people (tb, pneumonia) walking around
Schools - tweens with nothing to do, roaming the streets (even though the parent *might* be paying the same taxes as you and I).
Parks - yeah, keep them out of the parks, so that they have no place to enjoy the outdoors.

Do you really think the immigrants wanted to leave their homes and countries - WE BROUGHT THEM HERE. We did it. They left to get a better life economically, and some will return home, but the fact is, that WE brought them here, because we wanted cheaper labor. Our youth does not want to mow lawns (or their parents do not want them to) - So YOU (and I) are the reason why the illiegal immigrant is here, and will continue to stay until WE stop using them.

This is not a liberal/conservitive issue by the way.

What did the Conservitive Replicans in Virginia do in 2006/2007 to stop the influx of illegal immigrants?
What did the Conservitive Replicans in Manassas do in 2006/2007 to stop the influx of illegal immigrants?
What did the Conservitive Replicans in PWC do in 2006/2007 to stop the influx of illegal immigrants (other than 1 unfunded initiative)?
What did the Conservitive Replicans in the US Sentate do in 2006/2007 to stop the influx of illegal immigrants?
What did the Conservitive Replicans in US House do in 2006/2007 to stop the influx of illegal immigrants?
What did the Conservitive Replicans in US Presidential Suite do in 2006/2007 to stop the influx of illegal immigrants?
What did the YOU do in 2006/2007 to stop the influx of illegal immigrants?

Blame it on the liberals, but the liberals were not/are not in charge. Get with the program people, this is a bipartisan issue of doing nothing - do you know how much of our economy is being driven by illegal immigration?

Has anyone actually gone to Ron Paul's site and read what he wants to do about illegal immigration. He takes a hard stand and I like what he has to say.

I always vote, Leila, and my vote is private. There is no way that I could cast a vote for either of the Democratic candidates, however. I will vote for whom I would wish to see as President...I've always known how to use the write-in function. Perhaps if more people did, this country wouldn't always have to settle for the "lesser of two evils." My conscience is clear.

A vote for Hillary or Obama is a vote for surrender to Islamic extremism. John McCain is just the man to lead us to victory.

I think you got it wrong Duckie, a vote for McCain will ensure another 20 million illegals in this country within 10 years.

PS: I ask because so far I have never sat out an election. I have always gone the lesser of two evils route. So I am curious if all of you damning McCain at the moment will capitulate later.

What difference does it make where I grew up? For the record, I grew up in Texas. Do you have anything substantive to say? Go ahead and vote for Obama or HRC, you surrender monkeys.

AWCheney, so given that McCain is likely to be the Republican nominee, what does that mean for you? (or for Loudoun for that matter). Would you sit out the November election?

AWC - amen to your opinion on Ducky's vote for McCain. I am pretty sure that I grew up with Ducky and that he lived on Woodstock in Westgate. He won't answer my question if he is that same Ducky. If he is, everything he says should be taken with a grain of salt.

The fact that you seem to be a big supporter, Ducky, is another reason to think twice before voting for McCain.
