My parents were "American Dream" folks - work hard and smart and achieve your dreams. They didn't rely on the government and they passed these "values" along to my sister and me. My father told me once, BEWARE - when the government promises a socialized governance, it will give you something with one hand, but take twice as much with the other. Capitalism, he told me, is a good thing - completely in your control - you can make good or bad choices, but they are your choices and you are accountable for both. Both Socialism and Capitalism however can be abused. In the 60s some of my friends wanted me to join a commune in upstate NY. The first thing the "leaders" said was, "your personal assets become the commune's assets, for use by everyone." My personal asset was my car, and I wasn't going to share it with anyone. Nor was going to follow the "commute doctrine" that I work at a job and hand over my paychecks to the "leaders" to benefit the commune as a whole.
