MP Resident: No, because their assessments are never up to date. They are going to pull the values from the past year's averages that have been sold before this town really hit the crapper. The values have really only hit the floor in the past 6 months since subprime got big. I guarantee you that they will send me an assessment in the 300k range and houses in my development can't even sell at 275k. If it hits 230K which is what I paid for it then I'm officially up the creek. I bought at the bottom when they first built this development and if it hits that amount then values are less now than when they first started building the development in 2002. I can't imagine what all these Hispanics are feeling now that all bought within the past 2 years and all paid 350-375k which is what these places were going for 2 years ago. Walking away is the only sane thing to do at that point. How low can this town go? If the local govt. doesn't do something quick to make this town more desirable to people looking to buy then there's no way the town can make it an additional 2 years. Allowing illegals to run rampant while trash, blight and unenforced zoning infractions are out there for everyone to see certainly is not what will do that.

Patty: Won't happen because most of the town is eyeball deep in the illegal immigration quandary and don't want to rock the boat. I can't fathom paying 4+k a year in taxes on this place now when the values could potentially hit the value of what I paid for it when the houses were first built 6 years ago. Prices were still affordable then and we are almost near that point now. If it gets below what I paid for it then I'm going to have to really think long and hard with my mom who is a real estate agent and my brother who is an attorney as to whether or not I am going to just walk away from the house. Not really much point in sticking around in a town where home values are dropping like a rock in deep water and trash, blight, corruption, and cultural shock are all I get for my trouble.

Park'd

I had a wild idea. If all the citizens of Manassas Park marched into governement headquarters asking them to re-assess all your property values based on current sales, it would cause them to faint. Then while they are unconscious decent people could come in to run the government. The decent people should then call the FBI to round up these crooks while they are still in their stupor.

So, when is the next election for the City of Manassas Park? Or did the current powers take away elections?

I'll bet you those 130-250k homes in westgate are still being taxed at a value that is significantly higher than what they are currently selling for. It's a crime what goes on in this city but nobody cares. As long as the illegals can stay without fear of crackdowns then they don't rock the boat and the pols just keep going with their scams. This area has a reputation as being home to nothing but illegals so nobody wants to live here. Something has to give or the city will implode.

park'd,
I know you would love to lay rubber and peel out of the city. Here's an example of PWC RE Tax Bill
Total Assessment $350,600=Annual RE Tax of $2,936.
I hate to add salt to a wound, but all need to be aware of the significant difference. Good luck over there. There are brick single family homes in West Gate now going for $130k-$250k, and they were selling for $400-$500k. The prices really can't bottom out much more. We've heard of one house that the starting bid is $89k? This is very nice house. This unbelievable.

Laffy: you got that right. I wait with bated breath for my new tax assessment. My house has lost minimum 100k in value in the past 2 years and paying 4k+ a year in taxes on a house that might be worth 250-275k these days is absolutely RIDONKULOUS and frankly criminal and unconstitutional. I bet people in Potomac don't pay anywhere near this kind of tax. I should be paying about 3k a year at the most.

MP Resident,
Too bad the market's so bad. There are plenty of very affordable houses in PWC. Those real estate taxes are enough to make me choke compared to PWC's.
BTW-I loved you comment about the "luxury of posting".

"A side note - even though I don’t have the luxury of posting from work"

When you work with equipment that you paid for as well as internet service that you pay for, sitting at a desk you paid for in a chair you paid for in a house you're still paying for then you can post from work and it isn't a luxury.

If it's your employer's equipment, internet connection, desk, chair, and building and they allow you to post from work then I suppose it is a luxury.

Incidentally, that school has a per square foot cost about DOUBLE that of any school built in Virginia as of May 2007 when I researched it.

When I asked the school board why, they replied that they needed a larger building because of block scheduling. I don't know if they really misunderstood the question. It seems pretty clear to me--I asked not why the building is the number of square feet that it is, I asked why each square foot costs so much.

Either the school board is a bunch of morons or they think the citizens are.

As for me, I gave up on them. I'll just sit back and watch the economy in MP implode and hopefully I'll soon be living in PWC without even having had to move.

The tax monster that is MP is going to run out of food and die.

Park'd, this my elaboration via example...

As a parent of children in this community, I would love to serve on the school board. But after seeing members of the school board described as "co-conspirators" on this blog for their approval of the new school building - I went to one of the two town hall meetings on the subject and not a single person at the one meeting I attended said anything negative about the price tag (there were concerns about taking it out of the other side of town, but that was the extent of it.) I had heard from a neighbor that the tone of the second was pretty much the same. So how are individual members of the school board labeled as "co-conspirators" to new construction that was discussed in a public forum where the majority of the opinion was for the building? Granted, it was a poor financial decision, but it was one made in public, to some degree by the public, and we all have to live with the result. I don't recall any screaming about the price tag of that building.

It not the only characterization that I feel Greg has gotten wrong about the leadership of MP, but it is the one that I can recall that makes me most leery of running for office or serving this community in a public fashion. That characterization is untrue, unfair, and damaging. Conspiracy takes place behind closed doors, not in two town hall meetings.

MP Resident, elected and public officials should be subject to scrutiny, not distortions like the one I mention above. If you don't like the decision that someone has made, that doesn't make public officials "co-conspirators." Perhaps short sighted and less than intelligent, but neither are illegal, which is the implication of the term "co-conspirators." (A side note - even though I don't have the luxury of posting from work, given time I am perfectly capable of elaborating for myself..)

There is scrutiny and there is abuse and I think that in the example I cited, a line was crossed. I have every confidence that it will be crossed again. And that hurts people - their families, their professional reputations, things I value too much to put myself out there (heck, I think you would have to be crazy to do that now.) I have good ideas regarding fiscal responsibility for the schools and community and quality of life issues like overcrowding, things that could change this community for this better if I ran for the Governing Board or put my name in for the school board. But I won't. Yes, I would be willing to withstand scrutiny to serve, but not the abuse that gets dished around here.

Granted, it was a poor financial decision, but it was one made in public, to some degree by the public, and we all have to live with the result. I don’t recall any screaming about the price tag of that building.

If you don’t like the decision that someone has made, that doesn’t make public officials “co-conspirators.” Perhaps short sighted and less than intelligent, but neither are illegal, which is the implication of the term “co-conspirators.” (A side note - even though I don’t have the luxury of posting from work, given time I am perfectly capable of elaborating for myself..)

But I won’t. Yes, I would be willing to withstand scrutiny to serve, but not the abuse that gets dished around here.

I also curious, are these "girls" or women wearing wedding rings? Begs the question of "proof" under secrecy. Secret laws are problem laws.

First of all none of the girls in the pictures have made a formal complaint. Second did you stop to think that an outside agency would need to investigate so there wouldnt be a conflict of interest. That just may be why Manassas Park Police hasnt done anything.

This evidence has been kept under wraps for way too long...and it's about time someone exposes the truth of what's going on in MP. If it takes showing a picture to PROVE that there is wrongdoing that has to this date been ignored, then I say do it. The girls in the picture obviously want some justice, too. Maybe now the FBI or OTHER law enforcement will pay attention to what's happening here. Noone has been able to out this guy, so now the story can be exposed by someone that knows what happened from the very beginning, and action can be taken. You have no idea how much
is being hidden by the MP gov't.

By the way, I'm one of the "tawdry" people that like to go into Rack N Roll because if you went in sometime, it's just a nice place to hang out and talk to friends. I wish Dave the best of luck with his lawsuit.

NBC Dateline, Bill O' Reilly or Lou Dobbs. I'm sure Lou would LOVE to air a story on this if he thinks he could nail the officials of a town that is known as one of the greatest sanctuary cities in the state of Va. Stop blathering about this nonsense if you don't want to do something with the evidence! I say this with the utmost respect to you and your blog and your authority to do what you want though ;)
