As a former deputy in Alexandria, I felt I could be of some use. I met with his rep and was told in no uncertain terms that if I wanted to volunteer, I would be required to contribute $1,000 per year, max allowable by law, to his re-election campaign. I politely declined. I hate sheriffs. They are politicians, not law enforcement. Back when Lee was sheriff, I volunteered to be a reserve deputy. Moyers with you. While he had great street sense, he lacked any common sense and we all know you can't teach common sense. He was a loose cannon who flaunted the rules and procedures on a regular basis. Smart, but stubborn and unable to fit into a paramilitary organization. It didn't take long to see that eventually he'd be headed for a clash. He was given several chances after his initial trouble but just couldn't stop acting like the loose cannon he was. So...I'll let you finish the story. By the way, the academy attrition rate is at or below the average for a Virginia academy. A VERY small faction actually quits, well over 98% of those that wash out have failed one section or another. And isn't that the point of having standards, to remove those who can't cut it?
