Ken Cuccinelli Invites Maryland Companies To Virginia
By Greg L | 25 March 2008 | Virginia Politics | 13 Comments
While Virginia Republicans are working hard to maintain some degree of fiscal responsibility in Virginia, Maryland’s constant hunger for higher taxes has prompted their General Assembly to raise taxes levied on technology firms in order to pay for increased public spending. Ken Cuccinelli has an interesting response to this development, which is to simply invite those who are being taxed to death in Maryland to come to Virginia. Not only will this drive Maryland’s tax-hikers nuts, but we might just end up proving the maxim that government cannot actually tax a state into fiscal stability.
Here’s the letter:
RE: Open Invitation – Tech Businesses Welcome in the Commonwealth of Virginia
To Maryland Information Technology and Computer Services Firms:
You’ve worked hard to inform your General Assembly about the consequences of targeting technology firms for higher taxes. Now that efforts to repeal the “tech tax” have been rejected in Annapolis, you are looking at your options.
I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to relocate your business to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia has consistently been rated one of the most business friendly states in the nation in independent assessments, including receiving Forbes Magazine’s top-ranking for the last two years. Here in the Commonwealth, we believe that business is the lifeblood of the economy and I am personally committed to making sure we remain welcoming to business owners.
As a legislator, I understand the challenges of slowing tax revenues, but raising taxes on the most vital and forward-thinking businesses is never the answer. For the long-term health of the economy, businesses must have adequate incentives to grow, re-invest profits, and hire excellent employees.
In order to expand the economy, government must tighten its belt in tough times and rely on the private sector to do what it does best: innovate and produce. Because government inevitably takes more than it can give, legislators ignore this principle at their own peril.
As you consider your best options for the health of your business, please consider bringing your expertise to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Right here in Fairfax County, we have space in the high-tech Dulles Corridor that is calling your name. I would love to hear from you and connect you with resources for business owners here in Virginia.
We are open for business and we would warmly welcome you.
Sincerely,
Ken Cuccinelli, II
Senate of Virginia
I’d like to add to this sentiment an invitation for residents in Maryland who are fed up with your state and local governments giving your taxpayer dollars to CASA of Maryland, which uses those public funds to encourage illegal aliens to unlawfully reside in Maryland. We’ve got some great real estate opportunities for you over here in Virginia, local governments who are increasingly dedicated to protecting the quality of life and the rule of law, and illegal aliens are leaving. Since your employers might well be considering a move to a state that isn’t quite as positively insane as Maryland, you might want to consider doing the same.
If you come to Prince William County, we’ll even throw in a free membership in Help Save Manassas. What a deal, eh?

Now, if we could interest legal residents/citizens with real jobs to buy up the abandoned homes in PWC at bargain prices and fix them up to live in, we could have a chance at rebuilding the county.
Now that is just awsome. We need much more leadership in this state like Cuccinelli.
Fairfax County is so fortunate to have Ken. The electorate there should be proud that he really knows how to play the issues to Virginia’s advantage. The radical soccer mom who slavishly represents the marxist agenda of Arlington County cannot hold a candle to Ken’s leadership style, not that she would ever discover real leadership in a thousand seminars.
I hope its starting. I have a friend in College Park who is very
seriously considering moving to Va. He’s had it!
I think someone from Prince William County should also invite MD IT companies to come here.

ABSOLUTELY!
We’re actually behind on this. Pennsylvania and Delaware have been going after Maryland IT firms for a couple of months. And not just with letters. They have been calling and even visiting companies and suggesting the company move production and personnel out of Maryland.
Here’s the fun part. Opposition to the Computer Service Tax is coming primarily from Montgomery County. The Governor and Senate President in Maryland have told the Montgomery County legislators they can have their Computer Service Tax repeal - if they agree to support a higher income tax for rich folks, most of whom live in Montgomery County. So who do you want to tax, your IT companies that have made your citizens rich or the rich citizens who made the IT companies?
I should add that the Republicans in the Maryland legislature have been unified in their opposition to the tax and have been getting some good press as a result. Not that it matters.
Looks like Montgomery County is going to have to tax somebody in order to keep up their standards of service. The Washington Times had 14 pages in the Classified section devoted to foreclosures in Montgomery County. Auction, Auction, Auctions. And I thought we had it bad.
This is exactly why we need a Republican Governor right now in Va. Tim Kaine certainly is NOT going to go after these Maryland IT companies and offer them temporary tax breaks to offset the costs of moving into Va because he is a fellow democrat.
Our house is for sale and we’re hopefully on our way to Loudon. If we get there, I’m ready to join the cause in VA and make some noise.
I have lived in Maryland all my life, but I’ve had it. Maryland is governed by social workers. Gustavo Torres, the head of CASA is a de facto MOCO & PG county council member, and has co-opted Delegate Vallario in the MD General Assembly who happens to chair the judiciary committee. Here is a little clip of Vallario, CASA hero, at a candle light vigil in Annapolis last month.

The only people MD politicians seem to care about are illegal aliens and transgenders. My home state is a disgrace.
MdMan, you hit the nail right on the head when you said, “Maryland
is governed by social workers”. I left Greenbelt many years ago and
moved to Va. when Winfield Kelly was in the process of wrecking
PG County. Between social workers and crooks, they seemed to have
quite a grip on everything. (except me)
Hey, somebody’s gotta pay for Ike Leggett’s $65,000 bathroom.

I hear that there is space available in the Dulles Corridor.
