The Gilmore Campaign Spin Machine Cranks Up
By Greg L | 18 April 2008 | Virginia Politics, US Senate | 7 Comments
The Gilmore for Senate campaign under Dick Leggett is desperately trying to spin the what happened at some recent conventions in Virginia where Bob Marshall received a truly tremendous response from the delegates. After relating to readers what myself and several bloggers in other jurisdictions personally observed, the Gilmore campaign is responding with this, which was contained in an email forwarded to me this evening:
Not only did we win Chesterfield and Fairfax by margins of nearly 2:1, but most of the other localities around the Commonwealth are breaking that way as well. Just last night, we won Henrico County by roughly 7:1. These are not guesses, but numbers backed up by actual filings and delegate polling.
Perhaps it’s useful to put this all into context, based on Dick Leggett’s past history regarding the veracity of his statements:

Resignation hits Holtzman camp
Controversy dogs embattled Leggitt
By Jody Berger, Rocky Mountain News
Marc Holtzman’s campaign for governor lost its lead strategist and spokesman Friday when Dick Leggitt resigned, saying that after weeks of controversy he had become a distraction for the campaign.
“During the past nine months I have really enjoyed working to help you build a campaign team and to carry your conservative message to Republicans in Colorado,” Leggitt wrote to Holtzman in a letter dated Friday.
The resignation comes one week after Leggitt admitted under oath that he sent false polling numbers to a reporter.
Most recently, Leggitt, Teal and Holtzman had to defend the campaign against charges of campaign finance violations. Testifying in a Denver courtroom, Leggitt said he sent bogus numbers to the Denver Post but called it “spin,” and implied that it’s a common practice among political operatives.
Hmmm. I think I’m going to trust my own eyes, and those of folks not connected with either of these campaigns before I start swallowing this whopper, especially when this guy has a past like this. Does the Gilmore campaign really think we don’t know our history here?

Could we possibly stick with the issues that matter to the voters?
Let’s list what each candidate has planned for:
1. Job growth in Virginia.
2. Restoring Constitutional government.
3. Making government less intrusive in our lives.
4. Transportation plans and mass transit.
5. Energy independence (Not biofuel gimmicks).
6. Ending the war in Iraq and having no more undeclared wars.
7. Tort reform that will help reduce frivolous lawsuits.
8. Medical cost mitigation programs.
Let us ask these men just what actions they intend to take that will ENHANCE our Liberty.
What is a “medical cost mitigation program”? Sounds like socialized medicine to me.
A Gilmore candidacy will guarantee a Warner win.
Gilmore’s a hack. Cutting the personal property tax accomplished nothing but getting him elected.
From the reaction I saw at the Fairfax City Mass Meeting last night, Bob Marshall came out on top there. Although there were only 32 delegates registered (as I recall), Bob got a rousing welcome and applause from his speech, much more than the campaign worker who spoke for Gilmore. I think Bob won the lapel sticker contest also.
Trust Me, your comments are a reflection on the desperation of Bob Marshall, and, thankfully will be forgotten soon enough.
Delegate Bob Marshall received a standing ovation at the Prince William Republican Mass Meeting that I attended. Gilmore gave an excellent speech touching on important topics such as energy and drilling off the shoreline of Virginia which I wholeheartedly support. I will have no problem supporting him, IF he should beat Bob Marshall.
There is no doubt that Warner will be tough to beat because of his deep pockets and name recognition. What Bob Marshall accomplished with the defeat of unconstitutional legislation HB3202, will win over voters across the state. This is the type of leadership we expect, but don’t always get. With Bob Marshall everyone knows exactly what they’re getting. Someone that will fight for the people and protect the constitution.
