Manassas City To Deny Commercial Licenses To Illegal Aliens

By Greg L | 3 May 2008 | Illegal Aliens, Manassas City | 18 Comments

Manassas City has determined that the city may not lawfully issue a license to anyone who is an illegal alien, according to the MJM.

“The language that was removed is not needed for me to continue to deny a permit to anyone not legally present in the United States and we will continue to check status,” said Commissioner of the Revenue John Grzejka in a recent e-mail. “The research of federal law indicated that I must deny a commercial license to any one not legally in the United States, so the language removed is not necessary in the ordinance.” (emphasis added)

Bravo to the City of Manassas for figuring this out.  Now all we have to do is ensure that the Commonwealth and its municipalities also get a chance to discover that they’ve been engaging in practices that are contrary to federal law by not determining whether the recipients of commercial licenses have legal presence in the United States.  The scope here extends well beyond solicitors licenses, but to every kind of license and permit that a state or local government has the power to issue.

Oh, Marty…

So, maybe I lost track somewhere in all of the excitement. What part of this wasn’t covered last year?:
    >*>*>
“Starting this week, the city of Manassas upped its requirements to obtain a business license… From Labor Day on, those contractors and subcontractors who want to do business in the city will need to provide one of 10 documents that establish both identity and residency…”

Apparently, I’ve missed something in the FAQ’s which would tell me how to handle quotes & links without dropping the remainder of my comment.

Anyway, I’m glad the the obvious has become, well, obvious!

It’s about time!!! Let’s hope the City does not take another 1.5 years to get rid of that awful sign on Prince William Street.

Informative article in the early edition of Sunday’s
WaPo (May 4, 2008) about the rise of home sales
    in PWC and Manassas.

    “Metropolitan Regional Information Systems data
show that the number of housing sales for Manassas
was up 33 percent in March 2008 over March 2007.”

Yes, the number is off a low base and there are
still hundreds of unsold homes, but the tide seems to
    be turning.

Later on the article notes: “The cost is is what
bought Joe Munsell from Springfield to Bristow …
Munsell said he was attracted to the value, the
    family-friendly neighborhood and Prince William’s
crackdown on illegal immigration, which he said
    is making the area safer.”

I’m cautiously optimistic that this approach will prevent illegal aliens from peddling legally in the City. My Question: if the required documents are the same as required for employers to verify legal residence, then the same “document mills” that produce fake documents and retreaded SS#s, could produce the same for those seeking peddling license? Why not just require e-Verify?

On the positive side, there’s less an impetus to go throw this process just to have a street cart. This is a positive first step. Let’s see what happens when the food van parked in G’town South shopping center reapplies for peddling permit.

The e-Verify is an excelent thought for all counties and cities to use but why not require a biometric finger print verification done at the Jail to prove you are not someone else and not a criminal who is wanted as well. There are more then just the Latinos who need to be checked and why not keep these prints on file for future verification which could be done at the counter when they are renewed. It will be an inconvience but it would be effective

Fingerprinting is an excellent idea. In California, they are even required at settlement on homes. Makes it much more difficult to walk away from a mortgage only to pick up another property with no-doc and different ID.

Isn’t the catcher, that smaller businesses doing under a certain dollar amount are NOT required to have a business license and that this is where most illegal aliens doing business would fall? I think that ALL business owners should be required to have a business license. I don’t care if the smallest businesses are given it for free. It would be a way to stop the illegal aliens from running businesses.

    Starry,

You are confusing the county rules with the City rules, and Business Licenses with Peddlers & Solicitors Licenses, which is easy to do because the old peddlers laws were contradictory. Every peddler (one who sells wares on public streets and sidewalks, or sells anything except locally grown produce from a non-retail establishment such as fireworks, Christmas trees) must have a license. This includes roach-coach type vehicles, Icecream trucks, Taco trucks, and push carts.

This is a great win, and it flew in right under the radar of the illegal alien lobby.

Then, this is very good news.

If the county did the same thing we would loose a great many illegals and their white vans with 30 ladders.

One problem with the push-carts in Manassas City last year was that the carts were permitted to people outside the area altogether in many (I believe most) instances. The people actually operating the carts were not the same as named on the permits. This was a violation that seemed to slip right by our commissioner of revenue in Manassas while he was approving and issueing the permits, and further needed to be pointed out to the MCPD, then followed up on by citizens who demanded that authorities do the right thing. This made for a very tense relationship between certain citizens and the City officials involved.

When the city council considers this new approach, they need to be certain they demand that licensed retailers and contractors agree to employ ONLY people here legally, under penalty of law.

I really like the bio-print at the jail idea. How many illegals are going to subject themselves to that?

The city of Manassas requires that ALL peddlers and I believe all businesses in the city to have a license, no matter the income.
I hope that the city will be responsive if there is a problem again this year.

This really pisses me off. I cannot believe any locality would give a BUSINESS license to anyone of illegal status. These guys have stolen most of the work from our home improvement company - they even stand outside of paint stores now trying to accost MY customers. When my customer came back with her paint, she said she felt sorry for them. That’s when I had had enough and told her that well, I didn’t, they shouldn’t be here taking jobs away from those of us who REALLY PAY OUT THE WAZOO to remain a legitimate business. And didn’t she know that most gang-bangers are day laborers?

I want the City, the Park and PW County, and all of Virginia for that matter,
to start checking for legal status upon the yearly renewal for a business license. No more of this crap - I am paying dearly for these stupid mistakes and oversights by our local governments. My credit will never be the same after years of hard work and paying bills on time to keep it perfect.

And to tell you the truth, I’m beginning to not give a rat’s azz anymore.

Thank God for the BOCS (except Principi, who for some reason thinks replacing our legal workforce with uneducated cast-offs from other
countries is OK for his county, let them be). I was never so happy to see that 7-1 vote. Now maybe we can get some work.
