Who Is Mike Turner?
By Greg L | 9 May 2008 | Virginia Politics, US Congress | 32 Comments
The utter nutball that is Judy Feder isn’t the only candidate running for the Democratic nomination for the 10th District, there’s another guy by the name of Mike Turner. A friend of mine is at a debate between Turner and Feder over in Frederick County right now and shot me a fascinating email from his blackberry saying that Judy Feder was getting her butt absolutely handed to her in the debate. From the looks of his website, Turner has a substantially more compelling resume than Judy “I invented HillaryCare” Feder. He also isn’t a dead ringer for Woody Allen’s nonexistent twin sister, which can’t hurt. At this point Feder leads Turner significantly in fundraising, but Feder hasn’t shown that her ability to raise money outside the district can translate into electoral success.
If Turner has a shot at taking the nomination away from Feder, this could significantly change the dynamic in the 10th District. Frank Wolf had a cakewalk with Judy Feder in 2006 despite it being the best political environment for Democrats in years. Every mailer Feder sent that cycle ended up hurting her in the polls, and on video she comes across as a raging nutbag. If Democrats managed to nominate someone who was at least moderately appealing in the 10th District, would Frank Wolf have as easy a time as he did in 2006?
Has anyone heard of this guy? Is he a serious challenger for Feder?

I met him. He’s very nice, very intelligent, and very motivated. His charisma would give Congressman Wolf a run for his money. I intend on voting for him in the primary. Feder has the war chest, but I think that she might lose. He is making a greater effort to reach potential primary voters than she has, in my opinion.
Reading his resume is awe inspiring> I never understood how Judy Feder ever felt she’d have a chance. THIS guy, though, might just be what the Democrats need. His background would be hard to beat. Very interesting, indeed.
Socialized medicine anyone?:
“The Federal government would become the sole insurer of all Americans. Private insurance companies would be phased out over a 15-year period.”
That’s a little ditty from Turner’s issue page. It just makes so much sense, now that socialized medicine has proven to be such a disaster in those countries which have tried it out.
Turner doesn’t stand a chance against the liberal force that is Judy Feder. Even if Turner somehow pulled it off, Frank Wolf is very safe.
Face It.
The Democrats are too stupid to nominate a winning candidate, If they actually wanted to win the Presidency they’d Nominate Zell Miller, I’d be the first to support a great guy like that.
But back to Turner, If he did win the nomination, He could take a strong pro-gun stance, Get the NRA Endorsement and pull the rug from under Wolf in Loudoun, Fauquier and Manassas, Wolf has a very mediocre gun voting record, Notably voting against overturning the DC Gun Ban.
Turner is just a liberal or more so as Feder, he just does not look like an academic liberal nutjob. Turner or Feder would run, I mean sprint away from the NRA. Do I think Feder is in trouble in the primary? Probably not because she actually has raised money. Neither of these two candidates are up to the challenge of actually competing with Wolf.
Re: your complaint about Judy Feder’s appearance, oh yeah, we don’t want no ugly women in politics, how dare she not look like christy turlington. we want beautiful men like you greg… real nice, intellectual and political attack there. You stoop so low you’re under the floorboards. Do you think it’s OK for people to criticize your wife and daughters like that, when it’s completely irrelevant? eat your words, sexist.
Sarah,
Looks count and Feder looks and acts like a crazy liberal with glasses on. She does not have a distinguished congressional look.
Sarah,
you have got a point. It is true. I would be upset if someone made a comparison of someone not so pretty about my wife. I know that charm and looks sell, it would be imprudent to say otherwise. However, I agree we can do better than use appearance terms to denigrate a person. Most of the respondents in this blog referred to political points, which is the essence, and the crux of the issues, not looks.
As to the issues, as for me, anyone who openly supports Obama is not on my “team”. Turner does so in his latest mailer for votes. His background is impressive but his politics, as for me, are not.

The federal governent and our “leaders” are trying their best to turn this country into a third world nation. They might just as well add socialized medicine to the list.
I’ve met Mike Turner and was very impressed with him. He’s a moderate and if he could get just a little more money and name recognition he just could give Wolf a solid run. Not sure if he can get past Feder because the extremes of the party vote in primaries. That holds true for both parties.
I plan on voting for Turner, but will not vote for Feder if she wins the primary.
I have to wonder–if Turner is so great, why is he a Democrat? He’s probably a closet lefty. Socialized medicine? That is idiocy.
The Dems have been recruiting candidates who outwardly appear to be moderate. Once they’re elected, they either show their true liberal colors or are bullyed into submission.
I hope Feder wins, her manly appearance notwithstanding.
Oh, monticup, we Democarats are soooo sly. Pretending to be middle-of-the roaders and actually dangerous (yuck) lefties. How underhanded, how unethical, sheep in wolf’s clothing. Trying to dupe the righties, that’s what we do best, hoping they’ll take the bait.
Turner is a Democrat because he’s so great, that’s why.
I am the same way…. I will happily support Turner, but there is no way I would vote for Feder over Wolf in November. What both sides forget is that there are more moderates than extremists - the extremists always do an exceptional job of alienating me and my vote.
I’ll bet you 10 to 1 he’s a conservative Democrat, far right of the extreme left in the party. For that reason alone he will have appeal.
If you read Turner’s issue page, I doubt that you would consider him much of a moderate…he is, quite simply, a highly intelligent and politically smart liberal (something of an anomaly). Aside from socialized medicine (literally the Socialist version of it), you will also find NOTHING about illegal immigration, which would logically suggest that he knows he’s on the wrong side of that issue for this CD. Like I said…politically smart.
I looked up HR676, the single payer bill that Turner supports, and whether you like the provisions or not, you will see it surely is not socialized medicine. For example, people get to choose their own doctors and there is nothing in the plan that indicates that time to get care will be slowed down more than it is now, or that quality of care will be reduced. With about 6 out of every 10 doctors supporting it, this plan has a decent chance of getting passed in Congress.
Moderate, what you should be doing is checking out the experience of other countries which have socialized medical programs. As in any monopoly, particularly those controlled by the government, there are inherent problems involving quality and quantity of service. Essentially, physicians become part of the government bureaucracy, subject to pay scales and strict HMO-type rules…controlled by bureaucrats, not physicians. Eventually, in order to encourage more people to enter the medical field, ALL their education will have to become government-paid…and controlled. Taxes, just to pay for this nationalized medicine, will start to go out of sight…far more than you would be paying for the most expensive private medical insurance today. Eventually, to meet the demand for higher quality care, private medical insurance will start to crop up again, along with physicians who accept private patients…but you’re still going to be stuck with the cost of the nationalized medical program. You better hope that you’re quite rich when that time comes.
Krutis: You must realize that the Dem’s game plan is exactly that: pretending to be moderate to appeal to voters who would not ordinarily support them. Mark Warner, a multimillionaire, pretended to be a NASCAR fan and got gullible Virginians to vote for him.
Well, monticup, WAS he a NASCAR fan? You mean it’s a given that you’re a Republican if you like car racing? Live and learn! Personally, it seems like a nutty pastime watching cars go round and round and round and …, but maybe that’s something Republicans like to do.
Cheney, you say “Essentially, physicians become part of the government bureaucracy, subject to pay scales and strict HMO-type rules…controlled by bureaucrats, not physicians.”
Have you read the proposed bill (HR676) in its entirety? Are you saying that the 60% of doctors who support it are voting for a bleak professional future that would reduce the quality of their careers or that they are not smart enough to understand what they are supporting? Finally, do you have such a low level of confidence in American ingenuity that you believe our nation must simply copy what other nations like Japan have done and cannot improve on it — does not sound very patriotic.

You said a mouthfull there. No truer words were ever spoken.
I take it that you feel you will do well under Socialism, Moderate?

Krutis, time to put you helmet and racing gloves on and turn in for the night!
You might better ask why 4 out of 10 doctors would oppose a plan that guarantees them a comfortable living, with no fear of not getting paid.
You may also ask whether ANY bill would actually SAY it was going to make it harder to get care, or worsen the quality of care.
Government never INTENDS to mess things up.
Excellent point, Charles. As a matter of fact, one might also consider why so many physicians remain in the military (government doctors)…and relate that to comparable health care. I guess that’s why so many of our military and retirees forego that “free” health care in favor of private care outside the military system whenever possible.

I still don’t get the connection between NASCAR and elections. What about horseracing and elections? Any connection there?
…but AWC, how can it possibly be a bad thing?? Let the government give it to us and we’ll have FREE healthcare. Oh, and after that, I really don’t like paying for housing and food. Suppose we could get that FREE from the government too? Sure is good they can print more money, isn’t it?? Whew!!

Someone needs to ask the $ 64,000 question:
If this guy is so great why is he a Democrat ?
I just wanted to say that I have just read the BVBL Apology Page and I LMAO!!! I loved it!
While I am not a fan of BVBL, I do believe in Greg’s right to speak his mind! I absolutely Love the idea of the page.
Ed
Ed, after what you said, I thought I’d take a look myself. I’ll bet Greg had lots of fun with that! If you didn’t refresh the Apology Page to look at his other stuff, you should…it’s a hoot!
