Yorkshire Evacuated

By Greg L | 12 May 2008 | Prince William County | 22 Comments

News 7 is reporting that the Yorkshire area of Prince William County has been evacuated due to the flooding of Bull Run.  Lake Drive was particularly hard-hit.

I hope everyone is OK.  My house backs up on Bull Run, and the flooding was tremendous.  I’d estimate that Bull Run was at least ten feet above normal, which was as high as I’ve ever seen it, by far.

UPDATE: A reader emailed me asking for some more information, and I’ll bet some of you have what this person is asking for:

In 1972, hurricane Agnes destroyed large areas of Loch Lomond, Yorkshire, and Sudley.  Will you tell me how the flood control improvements performed at Amherst and Alleghany in Loch Lomond? This was a significant project for PWC in its day. And since it was designed for 100-year flood control, has never been tested. It was supposed to control run-off from Manassas Park into Flat Branch.

Can anyone answer this?

John Steinbach was on the news tonight as being one of the people evacuated from the Leland Rd. area flooding.

[Sarcasm Alert]I saw John Steinbach standing on the banks of the Bull Run, helping illegals cross over from Fairfax to PWC. He said he was practicing for his trip to Texas this summer, where he plans to do the same thing on the Rio Grande. [Alert Ends]

Seriously, I drove passed Bull Run Park on 66 yesterday, and the place looked like the Everglades. Must have been 3 ft of water standing in the fields. Saw a few Herons standing butt-deep in the water, looking for frogs I imagine. I feel bad for the folks whose property flooded, even Steinbach, as I would imagine that few have flood insurance.

    Just saw this,

Due to the recent confirmed tuberculosis case at Osbourn High School, a Community Health Forum will be held at the school at 9005 Tudor Lane at 7 p.m Thursday in the school auditorium.

    AnonGuy,
Your sarcasm sucks!!! How dare you make fun of anyone who has had such a devistating thing happen to them. Your joking is really way out of line. Have you ever had your house flooded? I hope it never happens to you. Since my home has been flooded, I do not appreciate you making light of such a tragic event.

If John Steinbach was helping anyone then I would say he is a man of compassion and empathy. Evidently you are NOT!!!!!

You are not the least bit funny. Wonder why Greg does not censor people like you?

If the Federal Government will not protect our children, then it is up to us. I believe that PWC should start requiring each new student to this county show proof of a physical (within the last month of entering the school) with emphysis on communicable diseases which we know illegal aliens are bringing into this country. We should not put our children at risk.

If PWC starts requiring each new student to the county to show proof of a physical, then PWC should pay for such physical. It would also pay for immunizations Not everybody can afford medical check-ups.

  7. Lefty said on 13 May 2008 at 10:36 am:

PWC should just require proof of citizenship to attend, and the hell with the 1982 court case that says otherwise.

  8. School Supporter said on 13 May 2008 at 10:54 am:

Manassas City Schools (where Osbourn High School is located) does require all new students to provide proof of a physical examination and an up-to-date record of immunizations. The required form is filled out and signed by a physician. This is a standard practice that is an essential safety measure for the children, teachers, and faculty. It is a fundamental requirement that all parents are advised will be needed when enrolling their child in school.

It should not be paid for by the City or County, as that would pass the burden of the cost on to the taxpayer. The burden of proof of immunization lies with the parent, as should the cost. Howver, it is true that there are those who cannot afford adequate health care, and that’s why there are already government subsidized clinics in our area that provide immunizations to qualifying families with school children right now.

Keeping all of the school children safe and healthy (irregardless of ethnicity) is the goal, and, from what I’ve seen, the faculty at our schools are doing their best to keep their eyes open for health concerns.

In case you uninformed do not know.

The Federal Govenment says all children must be educated. Proof of citizenship is not a requirement. I guess Lefty does not want any immigrant children to attend school whether documented or undocumented. Lefty probably does not want to educate U. S. born children immigrant parents either.

Any student entering the public school system as a first time kindergartner or a first time student in a new school is required to have a physical before entering.

  10. Anita Break said on 13 May 2008 at 10:59 am:

And by the way all immunizations have to up to date for a new student to enter school.

If it is a requirement then it is a requirement. There is nothing that says PWC should pay for immunizations or physicals. Look at how many students were kept out of the DC schools because they had no proof of immunizations. Are you saying that children of illegals should get another taxpayer “freebie?” NOT ON MY DOLLAR!!!!!

  12. Anonymous said on 13 May 2008 at 11:52 am:

The illegal aliens already go to the community health care facility and get free medical on taxpayers. What else is new?

  13. Anita Break said on 13 May 2008 at 1:51 pm:

Anonymous you are incorrect. Everyone using Community Health Center is required to pay something. Actually I just spoke with them today. They required $40 for the visit and $25 for the labs. They may or may not help with RX’s.

It is sad that the Community Health Center may have to close its doors because of a lack of funding. The Pr Wm Area Free Clinic, another clinic that serves Manassas, Manassas Park and PW County, only sees patients who are really, really poor. They use the Medicaid scale. The Community Health Center helped the working poor. Too bad the PW County BOCS is not going to contribute this year. I guess they feel like the working poor do not deserve health care. Oh, I forgot. An undocumented person might need health care. That is probably why PW Co will no longer contribute to the clinic.

For your info anonymous most of the funding for both these clinics is from private contributions. Prince William Co was only one of many contributors but the cut back in funding, services will have to be scaled back. If the clinic can’t raise all the funds it needs from the private sector the clinic may even have to close. Sad!!!

what you do not realize is that all students and teachers are at risk all the time. Even a teacher is not told because of medical privacy law if a student has a communicalbe ilness much less any of the students. That includes HIV and Hepetitus.

Every school I have ever attende, every school my children have attended have required a physical and proof of immunization.
To Krutis, there are means to get physical and immunizations for free. You said that everyone cannot afford to have a medical check-up. You have it wrong. Everyone cannot afford NOT (Yes I know, double neg)to have a check-up. It is not the health of the school or the community that should direct a child to be properly immunized. It is the safety of the child.

No matter how little $$$ I had, I would make sure my children had what they needed for a healthy life.

The working poor do deserve health care. I don’t think anyone has a problem with people getting medical treatment. The problem starts when you have people who don’t have any ties to a community and don’t know the true cost of the treatment they are getting and when the bill comes due they can just skip town or hide in the shadows. It runs the center out of business and when there is abuse like that, it is only responsible of the government leaders to put a stop to it.

If the private contributors want to keep contributing thats great, maybe they should do a fund raising campaign in the community. I don’t know how much the county was contributing but who knows maybe you would raise more money this way and more money means helping more people and getting better treatment. That should be your goal not just maintaining the status quo.

What is the real question associated with the thread regarding the flatbranch project? I am not sure what is being asked? It took years to complete because some of the landowners along the creek wouldn’t sign over property for the project. I believe it was finally completed during Ed Willbourn’s tour of duty as supervisor, but I could be off a few years.

I guess the fact that our houses aren’t under water is probably the test.
