If you’re interested in fixing the mess that is the Manassas Park City Governing Board, the deadlines are coming up quickly and no one is making much of an effort to let people know what when deadlines are approaching. The Manassas Urinal-Massager has published the call of the Manassas Park Republican Committee as required, but hasn’t reported on either that, or the requirements for running as an independent candidate. You’d think they have an interest in maintaining the status quo by their utter lack of even the barest coverage on the elections in Manassas Park.
The Manassas Park Republican Committee will have a “mass meeting” on June 1st at Manassas Park Middle School to select a nominee for Mayor and four nominees for the Governing Board, with registration starting at 1:00PM. Participants in the “mass meeting” do not need to be members of the Republican Committee, but must be registered voters in Manassas Park. Anyone who would like to a candidate for the nomination must file a “pre-application form” by 5:00PM on Friday, May 30th at 253 Cabbel Drive, Manassas Park. To get a copy of the form, contact Bill Wren at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 703-409-7650. For some unknown reason, the full text of this call is not available on the website of the Republican Party of Virginia, and the Manassas Park Republican Committee does not maintain a website for citizens to obtain this call, related forms, and other information about the candidate selection process.
If you miss this deadline, you can still file as an independent candidate by June 10th with the State Board of Elections, but you have to submit a petition with a minimum of 125 signatures in addition to your paperwork. It is far easier to get selected as the nominee of the Republican Party since the incumbent Republicans have all decided to run as independents, and the field is pretty open at this point.
The Manassas City/Manassas Park City Democratic Committee has not announced their process for selecting nominees yet as far as I can tell. There are some residents who have expressed an interest in obtaining the Democratic nomination, but with such terrifically non-existent news coverrage on this, it is hard to tell whether there will even be a convention or mass meeting to select nominees for the Democrats. They may intend to endorse independent candidates, provided there are any that appeal to them.
The consistent complaint that such voter apathy exists in Manassas Park is not at all addressed by the media’s total lack of interest in informing the public about elections in Manassas Park. A local paper keeping citizens in the dark about the elections process for their local government is utterly abominable.
