Florida and Michigan Problem “Solved”
By Greg L | 1 June 2008 | National Politics, Humor & Satire | 9 Comments
Yesterday the Democratic Party decided to seat the Florida and Michigan delegations, but decided to count each delegate as one-half of a person. My understanding was that Democrat precedent would afford these delegates at least three-fifths of a vote. I just have to wonder why people from Michigan and Florida would count for less.
Are they really less worthy than slaves? I can’t imagine why.

The DNC did this because a woman’s worth is valued at a rate even lower than that of a slave.
The majority of the votes in Michigan and Florida were votes cast by women. A woman’s vote now only has a one-half value in Michigan and Florida.
Even with the 19th Amendment……yesterday was further proof that a woman’s vote does not count for anything. It doesn’t matter if she is a Republican, Democrat or Independant. Our votes were not counted or treated with the respect they deserve by the DNC.
In 2004 ——- 22 million women who are registered to vote were ask to why they did not vote. 89% replied they did not vote because they believe their vote does not count and those in office do not concern themselves with the issues that concern women the most…….children, healthcare, equal pay, equal rights, social security, and education to name a few.
The DNC should not be surprised when the grassroots write-in movement begins in earnest next week. They did this to themselves and the party.
Actually the humor in all of this is the fact that many democrats (and I have voted both democratic as well as republican depending on the issues) are screaming on TV that Florida is being punished because their Republican majority legislature passed the law moving up the date. Revisionist history is really funny unless it gets too serious. Yes, the Repubican-led legislature passed the law but it was nearly unanimous even after Howard Dean warned the Florida Democratic Party and told them that they wouldn’t be punished if they showed “good faith.” Plus a Democratic State Senator was the co-sponsor of the legislation. The Democratic Party rules say this–
“In the event a state shall become subject to subsections (1), (2) or (3) of section C. of this rule as a result of state law but the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee, after an investigation, including hearings if necessary, determines the state party and the other relevant Democratic party leaders and elected officials took all provable, positive steps and acted in good faith to achieve legislative changes to bring the state law into compliance with the pertinent provisions of these rules and determines that the state party and the other relevant Democratic party leaders and elected officials took all provable, positive steps and acted in good faith in attempting to prevent legislative changes which resulted in state law that fails to comply with the pertinent provisions of these rules, the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee may determine that all or a portion of the state’s delegation shall not be reduced. The state party shall have the burden of proving by clear and convincing evidence that it and the other relevant Democratic party leaders and elected officials took all provable, positive steps and acted in good faith to achieve legislative changes….”
In other words, they just had to vote no and let the statute pass. But they really wanted an early primary since they thought the race would be over by their regular date and they wanted to be “relevant.” The co-sponsor even said it would be preferable to be relevant and not have a vote at convention than to be irrelevant and have a vote.
Now the revisionist history going on now is the funny story!
No to worry GOP - no matter how badly you screw things up-
Dems are there to bail you out. The the D’s are going
to implode over this and there is no viable way to
take a united party into November.
They have the following choices:
1) Change the rules AFTER the fact. African-Americans
are going to rightfully see this as underhanded.
2) Tick off two states vital to a Democratic victory.
3) Come up with some half ass “compromise” that
makes everyone mad. Of course, under Dean,
they went for #3. Snatched defeat out of the
mouth of victory.
John McCain in a walk if he doesn’t pull a “Macaca”.
It isn’t just the Democrats. The Republican delegations from Wyoming, New Hampshire, Michigan, South Carolina and Florida are all halved too, for the exact same reason. They held their primaries before the window allowed by party rules and were stripped of half their votes at the convention. The only reason nobody cares about them is that it doesn’t matter to pick the nominee.
jb, Did the RNC make their ruling before or after the votes
in those states? Did all the candidates know the
rules prior to the election?
Perhaps Obama would not have won Michigan or Florida,
but he would have certainly campaigned in both
states if he was told, before the election by the DNC,
that at least some delegates would count in Denver.
Damn it, it took his name off the Michigan ballot at the
request of the DNC! Hillary and Barack were both
officially informed the primaries in those two states
wouldn’t count. You may or may not agree with them,
but those were the rules BEFORE the elections.
How can the DNC fairly change the rules months
AFTER the primaries? That simply isn’t fair.
Big Dog, I beg to differ with you. It was OBAMA himself who removed
his name from the Michigan ballot.
groan
this party squabbling has nothing to do with slavery
wish people would stop muddying up real historical issues with silly things like this
Well, if Obama picks up Hillary as his running mate, he will have finally received the 40 acres (courtesy of his friend Mr. Rezko) and the mule (HRC) that are due all African Americans because of our country’s past injustices.
The Rs have done the same thing, cut delegate votes because of braking party rules.
