The Press Gets It: The Crackdown Continues

By Greg L | 4 June 2008 | Illegal Aliens, Prince William County | 4 Comments

The media has finally figured out that recent changes to the Rule of Law Resolution in Prince William County will make it tougher for illegal aliens to evade the consequences of their unlawful behavior, as Riley points out today.  Now all that’s left is the moaning and complaining of the illegal alien lobby, which had been irrationally hopeful that Prince William County had lost its resolve.  It certainly has not.

Finally, the media understands and gets it right! PWC has not softened its position on illegal aliens on bit.  Heck, they even provide a link to a copy of the county’s new policy.  The bottom line?  Police officers can still inquire as to someone’s status prior to arrest and the standard to do so has been lowered from “probable cause” to “reasonable articulable suspicion.”  Plus everyone arrested will now have their status checked, not just those for whom they have “probable cause.”

Although General Orders 45.01 and 45.02 don’t explicitly mention an officer’s legal authority under 8 U.S.C. 1372 and 1644 to question someone’s immigration status at his own discretion, Chief Deane’s press conference after his presentation to the board made it pretty clear that no efforts will be made to restrict this authority, and officers will be encouraged to exercise it when it’s proper to do so.  With all persons being screened after arrest, and suspected illegal aliens checked at the discretion of the officer (with particular emphasis on cases where the suspect does not have valid identification), I can definitely envision a substantial increase in the number of immigration checks that will be made, which will then be followed by a steady decrease.

Deane released statistics on the number of checks at his press conference, and some folks were scratching their heads wondering why the number of illegal aliens identified by the police had declined.  I guess they haven’t figured out that with fewer illegal aliens in Prince William County, police just aren’t encountering them as often as before.  Let’s hope that number continues to decline, which I am pretty certain will be the case.

Great work. Greg, my personal thanks to you for your efforts. I know that my neck of the woods is much different than it was a year ago (quieter, less full of unidentified lawless people, more full of people I can communicate to in English) and my life less stressful.

It’s time to move on to what is next. How about taking care of the little “hard-working, picked-upon” parties that take place in front of certain 7-11s in the mornings? Specifically, targeting the businesses that hire these poor, wretched, America-loving, just-looking-for-a-better-life, children of God?

We need to start encouraging Chief Deane to start regular patrols at the known day job pickup sites. This will encourage the illegals to leave sooner. Montgomery County needs the diversity!

I agree, I think the ROL has settled in for now. Of course it does deserve an occasional peek to make sure it is not boiling over. I agree that encouragement and not demanding the Chief to get the officers to patrol the sites is the best approach.
