On Route 28 in Yorkshire, there used to be a grocery store called “Il Primero Mercado”. Now that building is being re-branded as “Shoppers International” in an effort to broaden their market appeal beyond simply the shrinking market segment in the area that can only speak Spanish. As businesses learn that utter dependence on a market demographic that includes a substantial number of illegal aliens is not a recipe for long-term success, more and more of these businesses are making the transition to try to attract customers that speak English. Hopefully this is more than a signage change, and you can actually be understood in English in this store.
It would be awfully nice to not feel like we’re no longer in a foreign country in many parts of Prince William County. Let’s hope other businesses pick up on this idea and start accelerating the trend.
