Mark Warner Displays Incompetence

By Greg L | 17 June 2008 | Virginia Politics, US Senate | 17 Comments

Mark Warner decided to weigh in on the illegal alien issue in an interview with the Clarke Times-Courier, demonstrating at best his utter incompetence on this issue.  For someone who is expected to have a good grasp on the issues that most concern Virginia voters, Mark Warner absolutely is falling far short of that mark.  This remark could simply be just a case of Warner manufacturing his own truth, hoping that this alternate reality would support his position on the issue, but more likely is the case that Mark Warner, who has been entirely absent in this debate, simply has no idea what he is talking about.

You’ve got different rules based on different jurisdictions, and I know I’ve seen here in the county a tremendous increase in local taxes to try and pay for this,” stated Warner.

By “tremendous”, one would assume that Warner is referring to a figure in excess of the one and a half billion dollar tax hike he proposed as Governor in 2004, or at least in excess of the percentage that the one and a half billion dollar increase represented as part of the budget for Virginia.  In fiscal year 2005, the operating budget for the State of Virginia was $29.257 billion dollars, making Warner’s “non-tremendous” tax hike a pretty significant 5% hike.  Prince William County on the other hand approved $2.6 million in spending on enforcement of the Rule of Law Resolution out of a budget of $923 million, which represents a spending increase of 0.28%.  So Mark Warner considers a 0.28% spending increase “tremendous”, but a 5% tax increase that was his idea is “modest?”  This is just plain bizarre.

Perhaps Mark Warner just hasn’t any idea what he is talking about.  It’s not like he’s displayed anything approaching “leadership” on this issue, and he has been noticeably absent in every discussion on this topic.  He doesn’t ever seem to come to Prince William County in order to find out what’s going on, and he’s never attended any of the numerous meetings of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors when this was being discussed.  His proposed “solution”, as this article reports, would be to have the federal government handle the problem, and stop states and localities from doing anything to protect their residents from the impacts of illegal immigration that the United States Government has proven itself entirely unable to address.

You’d think that someone running for the United States Senate could at least have the ability to talk intelligently about what is one of the top issues among Virginia voters, even if you disagreed with his policy positions.  Mark Warner apparently cannot.  If he can’t even get his facts straight, it is unlikely that the decisions he would make based upon that horribly flawed grasp on reality would benefit Virginia in any way.

Mark should put his money where his mouth is and openly support the illegal who raped the ten year old. Since he does not seem to have a problem with illegals, he should not have a problem publicly supporting the guy and inviting him over to stay with his family.

He’s not getting my vote. The Federal Government can’t even run a successful restaurant in the senate. What makes me think they are going to successfully stop the illegal aliens. Wait!! They will pass a bill (I like how they call it a bill) in the middle of the night and force us to accept the illegals as equals. Because as we know our constitutional rights are not just for American citizens. They are for everybody including illegal aliens and terrorists. Why should us citizens of the U.S.A think we are special. Thank you Mark Warner. Thank you for putting us in our place. Thank you for talking down to the “little people”.

The word “try” seems so odd.

Why shouldn’t he run on this flawed grasp on reality? It worked for Webb!

Perhaps Mark Warner isn’t obsessed. I feel certain he didn’t make that statement in isolation.
That’s quite a leap there, CoM. Surely even you don’t believe anyone supports a child rapist.

That is baloney according to Rasmussen:

“Economic issues are the number one concern of 38% of Virginia voters, with another nine percent (9%) citing fiscal issues as preeminent; 28% rate national security as most important. ”

Illegal immigration barely makes a blip.

    Election 2008: Virginia Senate
Virginia Senate: Warner Widens Lead in the Old Dominion

    Monday, June 16, 2008

Democrat Mark Warner has widened his lead against Republican Jim Gilmore in the race for Virginia’s senate seat. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows Warner earning 60% of the vote while Gilmore attracts 33%.

Warner is blowing Gilmore out of the water, and probably will win Virginia for Obama.

Warner is for amnesty. I emailed one of his campaign managers looking for his stance on the issue and he emailed me back to say that Warner is for “comprehensive immigration reform”.

Since it looks like he has a pretty good chance of getting elected we should bombard him on the issue and let him know what the citizens of VA really want in an immigration policy.

I just saw a campaign ad for Warner, he touted how he turned around the Commonwealth and turned a deficit into a surplus. The ad continued by stating how Warner “invested” in jobs and education, and how he reformed the tax code. Of course the ad did not state he raised taxes. I suppose in keeping with his lying, this ad should not be surprising.

Obsession has nothing to do with it. Mr. Warner made a statement that shows, at best a lack of knowledge of the situation in Prince William County. If the Commonwealth would actually take some action against illegal immigration, instead of deferring to the Feds, there would not be a need for jurisdictions to have different rules. Emperor Kaine is fiddling while Rome burns. And Senator Colgan is apparently playing the banjo.
