Clinic Discontinues Services To Illegal Aliens

Hburgnews.com is reporting that the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic has announced that it wil cease providing medical services to illegal aliens, something that health clinics in Northern Virginia refuse to do. The clinic, which is 95% taxpayer supported, had up until recently using those taxpayer dollars to provide healthcare services to illegal aliens, which account for an estimated 10% of their patient population according to clinic staff. This should spark some discussions within other publicly-supported health clinics in the Commonwealth about the advisability of providing support to illegal aliens, a practice which may violate state and federal law.
Executive Director Rich Sider says that the board decided to limit participation in the free clinic based on feedback from some volunteers and other medical providers who were concerned about the amount of resources going to people who aren’t here legally. Sider also says that drug companies which donate pharmaceuticals require a Social Security number from recipients. Sider says they do not have resources to determine whether documents presented are valid or not, but that new patients without documentation will not receive services after their initial eligibility screening.
Will taxpayer-supported health clinics in Northern Virginia follow suit? That’s not very likely, at least until the rationale behind this decision in Harrisonburg is more fully presented. When that happens, it would provide a great opportunity for citizens to bring this issue to the attention of their local elected officials and start asking for some changes to be made. There’s no sane or legal reason why taxpayers should be compelled to provide funding used to support the unlawful presence of illegal aliens in Virginia.
UPDATE: Apparently part of the reason this decision was made was that the clinic did not have adequate resources to meet community demand, so while illegal aliens were obtaining taxpayer-subsidized medical care, American citizens were on a waiting list for the same services.

95% taxpayer supported???? Where did you get that info? It happens to be partially incorrect, I might add. Rockingham/Harrisonburg may donate some public funds to the clinic just as PW Co and Manassas City donate a few thousand to the Prince William Area Free Clinic, where I have volunteered.
The support for the Rockingham/Harrisonburg clinic mainly comes from:
United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Every Woman’s Life, Area Specialists, Rockingham Radiologists
Harrisonburg Medical Associates, Harrisonburg Surgical Associates, Harrisonburg Cytology, James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University, and Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center (AHEC) who are all partners with the clinic. Check the website for the clinic.
All of these groups or medical services donate either in-kind or financial services.

Undocumented workers pay taxes too…especially at the local level (sales and restaurant taxes, property taxes, and real estate taxes from homes they either own or rent). Are you saying YOU should be stealing THEIR tax dollars to pay for services they can’t get?

Absolutely. Sales tax proceeds should not be used to support violations of local, state or federal law. Drug users pay sales taxes also, but we don’t publicly fund “medicinal marijuana” clinics. Last time I checked, I didn’t see anyone making a fuss about that, but I guess pot smokers don’t have a grievance lobby at their disposal demanding they get special public benefits in the same way that illegal aliens do.

Fine, let’s make your ridiculous comparison between drug users and undocumented immigrants. Do you agree with these statements:
Drug users should not have access to government-subsidized medical care.
Drug users’ children should not be able to go to public universities.
Drug users should not be able to get drivers’ licenses.
And by the way, have you ever used an illegal drug?
American citizens, by law, have access to health care, public universities, and can obtain drivers licenses. Foreign nationals unlawfully present in the United States do not.
Drug users do not have the right to public funding to support their unlawful behavior. Illegal aliens do not have the right to public funding to support their illegal behavior, either.
So living is illegal behavior?
Living here illegally is illegal behavior, isn’t it? Why don’t you pay for their healthcare, since you are so terribly concerned?
I guarantee there are plenty of citizens in that area of the country that are not doing very well right now, and the last thing they need is to be put on a waiting list behind someone who has no right to even be here, according to the law of our land.

Only because they have no way around it. If they could, they wouldn’t pay those either.

Illegal aliens sneak into the US sometimes specifically for medical care. Of course the pregnant women time their break in just so their child can be born on American soil. Then they hit the anchor baby jackpot.
Harrisonburg already has a sales tax of over 10%! I make it a point never to stop there to shop or eat. What is going on there? Is it the influence of the JMU lefty faculty members?
Maybe some of you are unfamiliar with central Virginia, but I happen to spend a lot time there. I can tell you that there are PLENTY of working poor American citizens that need healthcare down there. Tax payer and donated services should go to them.

Do you support the illegal who raped the ten year old? Do you support the illegal who shot and killed three people last year? Illegals do not deserve to obtain free medical care. And, stop using the “they pay local sales tax. The last time I checked, the local sales tax was pennies on the dollar, not exactly a large amount of money to start with.
If multiple illegal families(which is very common) are living in one house, they are gaining more in services then they are paying in real estate tax, which makes up most of the income for local governments.
I am glad to see that some entities are showing common sense, such as the clinic. Resources are limited and should be used on those who are legal residents.
Take away their reasons for being here and the illegal aliens will leave. Take away their jobs, driving privilges (license/registration), free medical care, education, etc. and not only will they leave, they won’t come.
Times are getting tough, folks. If we give away our country, we’ll have a tough time getting it back. Europe is realizing this and doing something about it.

Looks like the Commonwealth Catholic Charities might be getting out of the business of supporting illegal aliens as well!
Va. charity probed for helping teen get abortion
(RICHMOND, Va.) Authorities are investigating whether a Catholic charity violated state and federal law by helping a 16-year-old illegal immigrant who was in the organization’s care get an abortion.
Workers with Commonwealth Catholic Charities helped the girl travel to and from the procedure in January and signed a consent form for the abortion, Joanne Nattrass, the charity’s executive director, said in a statement Thursday. She declined further comment.
Four of the Richmond-based charity’s workers were fired, according to a letter by David Siegel, head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ refugee resettlement program.
The federal department is looking into the charity’s actions and the role played by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The conference receives $7.6 million a year in federal funds to place unaccompanied illegal immigrant children in foster care until they’re reunited with relatives, sponsored, or returned to their homeland. The girl is from Guatemala but was living in Virginia when the abortion took place.
Federal law bans the use of federal money to pay for abortions with exceptions for rape, incest or threats to the life of the mother. Virginia law requires parental consent for an abortion for a girl under 18.
Commonwealth Catholic Charities serves children in the Richmond area as a subcontractor of the bishop’s conference. The conference “appears to have been aware of Commonwealth Catholic Charities’ actions,” Siegel wrote in his April 23 letter to HHS’ deputy inspector general, Timothy Menke.

I thought of a few more things your children are entitled to: free breakfast, free lunch, free field trips, free school supplies, and the school will spend an exta $3,000 a year to educate your children. Your chhildren then will be entitled to win jobs over regular Americans because your children are bilingual.
We have tourists who pay for a motel room, camp in our campgrounds, pay taxes for the things they use and buy and they aren’t “entitled” to these services. Many new legal immigrants or visa holders aren’t entitled to these things and they pay taxes. Many have to have a certain amount of money or their sponsor ensures these things are paid for because you are to show you are not going to be a burden on the society. Many elderly are denied immigrating to other countries because they are afraid they will drain their economy with medical bills unless they have alot of financial proof they won’t be. These services are for CITIZENS of this country. If it is a human right for all across the globe, then they can go back to their own country and get it. Problem is most of those countries don’t fund it either and it’s draining ours and we can’t afford it. When they can send billions back to their country, then it’s billions that should have been paid here for the services they’ve taken and are not entitled to. There are many citizens who have paid taxes their entire lives, some for generations, who never used these services and then now when they need it…..they can’t get it or are put on hold because too many illegals are abusing the system. The coffers aren’t endless and it’s bankrupt so many hospitals and clinics across the country that it’s good to see someone is finally standing up and saying no more before no-one has the services anymore.
Don’t even bother to try to use logic and reason with those who are firmly against something as logical and reasonable as the “Rule of Law.” They don’t recognize it.

Ask yourself: why do immigrants come here? oh yeah, according to you, to get all the “free” stuff. Ok, lets make a deal. Lets not offer anything “free” and make you all happy, and make the immigrants leave… but in RETURN, YOU MUST STOP BUYING ANYTHING, and I mean, ANYTHING not made in the USA. Go ahead, give it a try. I would like to see you buy your Gap shirts, try to look for any chicken, fruit or vegetable that was NOT MADE OR PICKED by the immigrants that so much bother you.
