Democrats Vote To Protect Criminal Illegal Aliens From Deportation

By Greg L | 24 June 2008 | National Politics, Prince William County | 40 Comments

Frank Wolf once again stood up for localities that are trying to ensure that criminal illegal aliens are not set free after their sentences are completed in a vote on the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security today.  Unfortunately, Democrats decided that the Section 287(g) Program doesn’t deserve funding and gutted the program.  If this is allowed to stand, at the beginning of the next fiscal year (October 1, 2008) the program in place at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center that has resulted in the deportation of hundreds of convicted criminal illegal aliens will end, and these illegal aliens will be released back into our communities.

That means that illegal aliens who have been convicted of murder, rape, child abuse, assault and gang participation will not be deported, but turned loose on our streets.

Here’s NumbersUSA’s take on today’s debacle:

Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee have effectively blocked state and local governments from enforcing immigration laws anywhere in the country.

Here is how it happened:

The DHS Appropriations bill, drafted by Rep. David Price (D-N.C.), took funding away from the 287(g) program, which enables state and local police to coordinate with federal authorities to enforce our immigration laws.

Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), offered an amendment to restore the 287(g) funding to the DHS Appropriations bill.

That amendment was defeated along party lines (All Republicans voted to restore the funding, all Democrats voted to gut the funding). It needs to be noted that Rep. Wolf stood up for Rep. Carter’s amendment and argued strenuously for it.

Call Rep. Wolf and thank him for standing up for 287(g) funding.

This partisan play by the Democrats on the Appropriations Committee is a terrible blow to immigration enforcement across the country.

State and local police are badly needed to help overwhelmed federal immigration authorities apprehend and detain illegal aliens in the interior of our country. Illegal aliens currently outnumber federal immigration agents by 5,000 to one, and only 2,000 federal agents are active in enforcing the immigration laws in the interior of our country. Clearly, those numbers indicate that a limited number of federal agents are incapable of confronting the estimated 12-20 million illegal aliens currently inside our nation’s borders and would benefit from the assistance of the more than 600,000 state and local law enforcement officers nationwide who come into contact with illegal aliens every day.

UPDATE: FAIR has more information this evening, which clarifies what happened today:

This morning, Rep. David Price (D-NC), Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Homeland Security, presented the FY09 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill to the House Appropriations Committee. According to Chairman Price’s earlier press release, the bill mandated that $800 million of the funds allocated to ICE be used to identify and remove criminal aliens in an effort to reprioritize ICE’s law enforcement activities. This spending requirement could restrict ICE’s ability to fund other enforcement priorities should the need arise. Additionally, the bill provided approximately $90.7 million for enforcement which is short of the President’s request of $93 million.

To counter this move, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) offered an amendment that would shift from a non-enforcement area of the bill just $2.3 million specifically to help fund ICE’s worksite enforcement efforts. Earlier today, the House Appropriations Committee rejected Rep. Kingston’s amendment in a largely partisan vote.

In support of his amendment, Rep. Kingston told the committee that:

Workplace enforcement is important because employment is the driving force behind illegal immigration. The demand for fraudulent documents made by illegal aliens creates the thriving criminal enterprises that make them.

  • ICE’s Worksite Enforcement arm plays a key role in fighting against illegal immigration and homeland security, promotes national security, protects critical infrastructure and ensures fair labor standards.
  • Worksite Enforcement Investigations focus on employers involved in criminal activity or worker exploitation, including:
    • alien smuggling, document fraud, human rights abuses and/or other criminal or substantive administrative immigration or customs violations;
    • substandard or abusive working conditions;
    • employers who utilize force, threat, or coercion, such as threats to have employees deported in order to keep the unauthorized alien workers from reporting the substandard wage or working conditions.
  • The presence of illegal aliens at a business does not necessarily mean the employer is responsible. Developing sufficient evidence against employers can take years; therefore, ICE builds worksite investigations in stages.
  • No industry, regardless of size, type or location, is exempt from complying with the law. These investigations often find that some of the employers are not paying a living wage, paying overtime, etc.

Vote for Obama, and all is lost. Obama, Reid and Pellosi WILL throw open the doors to more illegals, and make it very hard to deport the ones we have, even violent criminals. At least McCain might veto a bill that contains items like this.

How can this NOT be an issue the GOP wants to bash Democrats on? How can this be happening? How can our government be telling us they have abrogated all responsibility for helping to enforce laws they don’t like?

Waiting for someone in Government to stand up and be counted.

DHS/ICE won’t take this lying down. I just contacted Frank Wolf’s office to see what we can do to get this funding reinstated. Once I have a response, I will post it.

The Democratic party’s stance on illegal immigration is why I am no longer a Democrat.

Common sense should bring support of 287(g) from
both sides of the immigration debate. Getting rid of
the really bad folks protects ALL of us and helps to
stop crime in OUR community. It is a federal program
that has actually helped with a very positive
cost/benefit. The Dems are shooting off both feet
with this one - there is simply no reason to not
    continue the program.

I just called Congressman Price’s office and of course they are clueless to the issue and even said the Congressman supports the 287(g) program and that his amendment just restores the same amount of funding as last year. I asked for additional information and hopefully, that will be forthcoming.

If this does pass I can only imagine how long it will be until there is a huge lawsuit from a family who has a loved one die at the hands of a released criminal who should have been deported.

Citizen is right, of course. Same reason the Catholic church is pro-illegal immigration. Politicians and Priests know the only way to hold on to their power is to have millions of poor, indigent, and uneducated depending on them to deliver either “salvation” or “those nasty rich people’s money” through taxes.

How many “hundreds” of aliens have been deported back to their countries of origin from the PW adult detention center in the last few months? Or is the sentence intended to convey that nationally “hundreds” of aliens have been deported, some of whom are from PW? If the latter, what’s the number? Engineers and mathematicians love numbers.

Once again, since I can’t keep up with two web sites daily, I have to pull a concept forward in the context of the current issue, since it is a concept that seems to be so mis-understood regarding “why” people want to pass these laws that help “illegal” aliens, in the face of common sense.

Anon and Anchor baby on 14 Jun just didn’t get it either, claiming that to advocate for common law enforcement, equates to a “socialist” state or hatred of “freedom”. How ignorant can the “liberal” legislature get than to advocate for “anarchy” and “freedom from the law” based on what ethnic, racial, gender or religious group you belong to, rather than what “law” you have broken.

My answer: What? I’m talking about protecting “individual” rights under a common law. not advocating that “individuals” through arrogance and defiance, can create “group rights” based laws allowing them to wiggle out of a common law applied equally to all, because they belong to a different ethnic, religious, gender or racial social group.

Applying “common law” and enforcing “common law” on all individuals the same is not a “socialist state”. and yes I have read the constitution, and the debates between the power to the people and the power to a central government. The “law” is the bridge between the fair and equal application os those laws, not subject to “un-equal” enforcement, just because you complain that your “differences” in ethnicity, gender, race or religion are not recognized and dealt with as a “special” case. Socialism is by definition, wanting everyone to have the same identical wealth, with in practice, with historical evidence to prove it, creates poverty. A market economy, under common law creates wealth. The Greeks and Romans knew this, and John Adams as the framer of the constitution knew this. You cannot allow “factions” to claim different laws and different rights, than “individuals” are entitled to, as it is these factions (federalisms) that will destroy your government, peace and stability. It was Thomas Jefferson who was most concerned about individual rights, as was Patrick Henry, who also worked with ADAMS to create an individiual “bill of rights”, protecting the power of the People, from “factions”.

I’m telling you, ethnic groups are trying to apply the law differently to themselves as a “faction” and not individual rights. These “factions” create lunatic loopholes in the laws for themselves, and their “faction group” only based today on ethnicity, religion, gender and race.

If you cannot “integrate” and apply the law equally, you will suffer the same fate of the Greeks and Romans, who recognized that a common law must be applied under a common “senate”, to promote peace and propserity in trade. Both civilizations collapsed when they broke into “ethnic” FACTIONS that had “political and legal divisions” between competing ethnic groups that eventually collapsed both empires, and “ignored common law”.

Freedom is not my enemy, I fought in the US military for that, I understand it, and the price of it all too well.

    From Price’s statement-
“Moreover, the intense focus on the broader illegal immigration problem – consisting primarily of an effort to intercept, detain, and deport individuals who illegally cross our borders in search of work and a better life – is distracting the Department’s attention and diverting the Department’s resources away from the truly dangerous threats and challenges we face.”

“First, the integrity of our immigration laws is compromised primarily by the fact that those laws are grossly unrealistic in relation to our labor market demands. And second, there can be no credible argument that deporting illegal workers should take precedence over efforts to combat smuggling, prevent terrorism, and deport criminal aliens.”

HERE IS ONE OF THE BEST QUOTES—
““As comprehensive reform has floundered, our Subcommittee has used the power of the purse to take on the Administration’s skewed priorities in immigration enforcement.”

  16. Maureen Wood said on 24 Jun 2008 at 9:47 pm: Flag comment

Boy Price is just an illegal alien apologist! You really need to read his whole statement if you can stomach it.

““Our Subcommittee has also taken on the challenge of border security – through what will be a one third increase in the number of Border Patrol officers from the beginning of FY 2008 to the end of FY 2009; by compelling attention to the vast Northern border (which is more significant as a potential entry point for terrorists than the Southern border); and by requiring some accountability as DHS spends hundreds of millions of dollars to build fencing along the Southwest border.”

““The bill imposes requirements on DHS to manage its programs efficiently and to ensure that programs comply with all laws before they begin operations.”

Well, I just sent my letter to the Congressman:

    What are you thinking Sir?

    Your quote:

“As comprehensive reform has floundered, our Subcommittee has used the power of the purse to take on the Administration’s skewed priorities in immigration enforcement.”

Reform has not floundered IMHO. It is just getting underway with DHS. Reducing the funding now is not the right thing to do. How can you allow people to break the law by entering the country ILLEGALLY and not punish them for it. If they are not punished for this infraction others follow and as they are not punished for those, even bigger ones follow. It is an endless cycle that can be stopped by your support. One man can not do the job of 1,000’s. DHS needs this program to allow officers to assist them with their work. it is imperative that you reconsider your stand and get your fellow Democrats on board for the support of our country’s immigration reform policy.

I ask, as a fellow citizen, that you stand up and do the right thing and end this invasion of America before your grandchildren have to deal with even more than we are dealing with now. I can almost guarantee you that if the criminals are not punished, they will only move on to other crimes bolder than the last. As a law maker and distinguished gentleman, you have the obligation to protect your fellow citizens no matter what district they are from.

I thought it was well written personally!!!

My hunch is that Obama will make less treasonous attempts at amnesty than McCain.

In Obama’s book (the chapter “Race”) he at least admits there are real, valid problems inherent to the illegal invasion and real causes for concern.

McCain has branded those who oppose amnesty as the enemy - “those people” - and fought consistently and strenuously to falsely define the choices as Amnesty or Forced Bus Deportation. He has repeatedly promised to continue that fight.

IMO we have more of a chance to get Labor Unions and African-Americans to work together to oppose Amnesty than we do Country Club Republicans. I don’t regard Obama as a completely lost cause. It seems to me the Democratic Party should naturally oppose illegal immigration and Amnesty, but are transfixed by the very real possibility of creating a permanent Democratic voting bloc.

Really, we need to fight the leaders of BOTH parties and let them know their current course of action is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. Voting for Obama probably won’t help in that regard. But voting for McCain is very definitely capitulation on the issue.

He is THE biggest proponent of Amnesty walking, and the man who tried hardest to ram Amnesty through.

This Nation has 47 millions citizens without medical insurance, Million of our elderly chose between food and medicine every day. The Corrupt Politicians and Liberal Media try to get the public to believe they are Compassion, & Wise for wanting open borders and amnesty. While American Citizens are racist & xenophobe if we request that our Constitution and Immigration laws be followed and enforced for all law breakers irregardless of race or nationally!

It is the money they get from business from supplying them slave labor with 20K worth of benefits paid each year by the tax payers and the Latino votes with the promise of 100,s of millions more if we give them amnesty that they are really after.

If they really are Compassion and Caring there are Millions of American Citizens that have played by

America please wake up. Our Country is being taken over by Muslims, Mexicans and central America. Obama is clearly a MUSLIM and will give our country, our beloved America to his beliefs and culture. Of course he wants the troops out of there, he is protecting Iraq so that they can build and use bombs on us. He will have at his disposal everything to destroy America. How can he even be considered for presidency. He is Islam, just say his name. Are we insane to even consider this. The democrats should realize what they are doing. They do not care. Muslims are ruining the world. They are creating Havoc in Europe and all over the world. Please stop them now before it is really too late. Politicians are talking about dissolving Social Security, yet they want us to support all these foreigners, who do not respectour country. I am sick and tired of having my taxes support their freedoms. They overburden our schools, force their language on us,change our neighborhoods into boarding houses, get free everything. What about us Americans who do everything legally and are taxed to the hilt. We paid into Social Security, what have the illegals paid. I am becoming ashamed of my Country because it does not take care of its own. Charity begins at home. Please be very careful how you vote in all matters and get out the democrats who are liberals. Do not make a Muslim the leader of our Precious America. Keep it American and clean it up. GOD BLESS AMERICA. VOTE AMERICAN.
