McCain, Obama duel on economic fix-it plans By CHARLES BABINGTON and LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writers
    25 minutes ago

DENVER - Barack Obama and John McCain agree on this much: The economy is staggering under the Bush administration, and Americans are hurting. But who’s to blame and how best to fix it?

Well, they part ways on that, as they made clear in dueling economic speeches Monday on the issue that has taken center stage in their presidential contest.

Obama said that McCain offers a third term of President Bush’s policies.

“John McCain’s policies are essentially a repeat, a regurgitation of what we’ve been hearing from the Republican Party over the last two decades, maybe three,” Obama said in St. Louis, where his plane made an unscheduled stop because of mechanical problems that forced him to cancel an appearance in Charlotte, N.C. “It’s part of the reason that we’re in the situation that we find ourselves in right now.”

McCain has been forced into a more defensive crouch because his party has held the White House while jobs, home values, stock prices and consumer confidence have tumbled.

While calling Obama’s plans expensive and unwise on Monday, he tried to distance himself from Bush where he could.

“This Congress and this administration have failed to meet their responsibilities to manage the government,” McCain said in Denver. “Government has grown by 60 percent in the last eight years. That is simply inexcusable.”

He promised to veto “every single bill with wasteful spending.”

Does it seem that traffic on 66 has gotten better in the last few months? Of course outside of the occasional accident or a Statey sitting in the median enforcing HOV and slowing everyone. Higher gas prices forcing more use of mass transit and fewer trucks? Fewer bad driving legals AND illegals?

As for the traffic on 66, I think with higher gas prices, more people are telecommuting.

Contrary to what was recently published excusing the actions of speculators due to lack of evidence, I offer that you simply look at the ENRON case and you will see the same effect in today’s gas market.

During the ENRON manipulation, nobody could find “evidence” because the insiders were working secretly to shut down generators in order to drive prices up.

Unless one of the inside speculators blows the whistle, we are not going to find a single piece of evidence of market manipulation other than what we can infer by the irrational prices being paid.

Somewhere, there are some speculators who have influence at the refining, transport or production levels and who are making back room deals to shut down production or delivery of fuels to keep prices high.

This debacle is a bitter, yet necessary lesson to all of these “free market” theorists who champion the elimination of government intervention in all economic endeavors.

We are being ENRONed and none of our elected officials has the guts to do anything to protect the interests of the People. Every incumbent should be voted out of office until gas prices are back to below $1.00 and we have a national policy for energy independence by the year 2020.

Free Citizen - thank you for the tip on the possible zoning amendment. I urge everyone to write to the supervisors and ask them to oppose this @ bocs@pwcgov.org.

Here is text from my email:

I respectfully request that the possible zoning amendment on today’s agenda to allow for gravel surfaces for parking on lots of less than 1 acre be removed from consideration (Vehicle Parking on Residential Lots). Gravel driveways are unattractive and detract from the appearance of our neighborhoods.

Creating parking lots in front and rear yards also detracts from the appearance of our neighborhoods. In Westgate, many of these parking lots include painted parking lines.

As you may know, in PWC we have problems with owners/occupants parking vehicles on the grass. In many cases, the parking violations are occurring at overcrowded homes. Neighborhood Services has been extremely responsive about problems with parking in the grass and parking on gravel. In several cases in Westgate, Neighborhood Services has identified overcrowded homes at the properties where parking on the grass and parking on gravel has occurred.

Please do not consider changing the zoning laws to allow parking on gravel. Please maintain the requirement that parking is only allowed on an improved surface.

Just what we need….another shopping center. The old Weis Market space just down the road is still empty. This area is destined for lots of Pupuserias and Mexican bakeries in the next few years, once the owners become desperate for tenants. I don’t see how this corridor can support four shopping centers, plus a WalMart store.

Guess I am old fashioned, but I miss the cornfields. Can’t we build a park once in a while in PWC?

“For José, whose last name is being withheld because he is not in the United States legally, a District superior court judge ruled in February that his claim was more credible than his employer’s.”

Why is his name withheld? Just because he is here illegally? I thought they only withheld names of persons who were victim of crime like rape or young people under 18? And besides, isn’t a court proceeding public information?

    Here is the whole article-

Wonder how long the Vienna, VA Town Council is going to stay in denial of our flop house issues? Despite complaints from citizens, the TC has let what started in the SW/SE side of Vienna spread to all quarters. This house is down the street from Town Council member George Lovelace.

On July 4, 2008 at approximately 2:11 p.m., units from the Town of Vienna Police Department responded to the 100 Block of Lewis Street, NW for a reported assault. After arriving, an officer began interviewing the complainant in Spanish. The complainant reported that earlier in the day at approximately 2:00 a.m. another individual that lives in the home had attempted to make contact with the victim. The victim was sleeping and had his door locked so the subject was unsuccessful in making contact.

Later on that same morning, the victim awoke and came out of his bedroom. He was approached by the same individual, Vicente De Jesus Carrion Espinosa, 42, of Lewis Street in Vienna, and told to go run an errand for him. The victim refused and was then threatened with a knife. The victim fled and secreted himself in a bedroom.

The arrested subject forced the victim to remain in his room under threat of violence for approximately 4 hours. At approximately 2:00 p.m. the victim was able to exit the room and call the police. Officers entered the home and found the suspect, Mr. Carrion Espinosa. He was arrested and charged with Abduction by Force and transported to the Fairfax County Adult
Detention Center where he is being held without bond.

    Mr. Anon,

I sort of agree. While we need a commercial base, I don’t see how we can support additional nail salons and dry cleaners. I don’t mind a couple of new places to eat, but both the County and the City should do a better job of attracting unique stores and shops.

The big thing now is “hiring” a “firm” to negoitiate your debt, like your
    credit cards. Don’t do it.

The Palmer Firm, or Debt Group, deducted money from our checking account for 12 months, and never once negotiated or contacted the credit card company.

They told me DO NOT TALK TO THE CREDIT CARD COMPANY - DIRECT THEM TO US. WE NOW REPRESENT YOU.

In the meantime, the credit card company was getting pissed that I didn’t
    respond, nor did my “lawyer”.

Well, when I got the summons, DG wanted it faxed to them “right away”. Ok, I did that. Nothing.

Next thing I get is notice that I have a judgement against me. For not
    showing up in court.

I demanded a FULL refund of my money, and got it. But now I have a
judgement against me cause they DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for an entire
year. Thanks Palmer Firm. You’ve just ruined my credit after I paid you
    to prevent that very thing.

Yes, the Wal-Mart by Balls Ford is closing when the one in the Mall Opens.

What I do not understand is Target. They opened a store in Gainesville, and then opened the one off of Route 28, which if you think about it is only about five miles from the one in Gainesville. Also, they are expanding the Mall location to compete with the new Wal-Mart.

There is also a Star Bucks that is due to go into a yet unbuilt strip mall on Route 28 across from the new Target.

Also, the Harris Teeter in Bristow has one. Pretty soon, we will have just as many Star Bucks as we do nail salons and dry cleaners. Some consider that progess for Manassas.

An interesting thing happened today at the day labor site at Coverstone 7-11.
After a civic organization did a bit of observing Saturday, and no doubt made a few more phone calls to have officials take a closer look at what was going on here, good news!!………..the typically 100 men who hang out for hours here were scattered today as there is a new surveillance on the scene. The property owner hired a security guard who has taken his job seriously and getting some police support on that site. Most of the men scattered to unknown areas, some shifted to the corner of Coverstone Apartments

On the other hand, there were high numbers hanging around the Rt.1 7-11 and around Rico’s Taco’s. Any suggestions for where these willing, hard-working, just -doing- what -americans- don’t -do- anymore jobless men can now meet to get some daily wages?

So hopefully the forces will gather on this gravel mess but there are other changes in there that are not good for our Community.

I don’t understand why we spend all this money forming a Neighborhood Services and putting such changes forth that uses up tax money for the Planning to spend hours on such tripe. I guess Griffin needs to know he has a job to do.

Rumor amongst some sources, but I did talk to one employee who pointed to the new espresso machine and said that they wouldn’t have gotten it if they were leaving. This person said the new machine costs as much as a car. I figure I will consider Manassas Junction my home store and the drive thru will my fall back for when getting multiple small children out of the car is too much to bear.

I go to parks too. I love Signal Hill. Go to Costello as well and like that. We tried to go to Stonewall the other day, but there were 20 men hanging out on the playground equipment. More than I wanted to deal with. But coffee… I have kids. I work, I don’t sleep, I don’t get to go out. I don’t even get to go out with friends for cocktails. I have no life. I also don’t use drugs, smoke, or drink alcohol. Starbucks is my one vice. I personally want it to be as available as possible. Maybe not on every single block like in DC or New York, but I am not going to complain about four in Manassas. Heck, it could go to three if they had too. But I need a drive thru.

Get a grande non fat no whip mocha… it’s 5 points on Weigh Watchers (about 250 calories) and darn tasty.

As a gallon of regular gas fast approaches the cost of venti muck-a-muck at Starbucks, maybe our state representatives should consider a coffee tax to supplement our road improvements. After all, a cup of coffee and the drive to work go hand in hand.

On a side note – Perhaps a few more Starbucks will prevent the section of Liberia between Rt. 28 and the PW parkway from looking like the Marumsco “Miracle Mile”.

Again, they are willing to make it easier for more traffic to go through there, but what will they do to improve the roads? Nothing. Just like they are doing with Rt 28 to Centreville. Add more houses and condos and do nothing about the traffic.

My sister makes that same argument, but she is just bitter because she is a smoker in a high cigarette tax state.

Citizen makes a good point… thought that one shopping center behind Commerce Bank had me a little concerned (I don’t get my nails done), but I think the Starbucks, Harris Teeter, and Noodles and Company are at the higher end of what could be there, leaving it looking less like Marumsco.

    John McCain

How in the world can the Republican Party get saddled with a nutcase whack-job who knows nothing about economics, is so anti-capitalist he uses “profit” as a term of derision, has never run a business or had any job outside of government, will raise taxes, is so stupid that he believes “stopping global warming” is worth destroying the American economy, won’t drill ANWR to alleviate our energy deficit, won’t appoint strict constructionist justices, won’t protect marriage, would throttle free speech given another opportunity, hasn’t protected the borders in his 26 years in Congress, will give amnesty, citizenship, and a ‘key’ to our country to 20 million illegal aliens (god’s special children in his twisted mind), is beloved by the New York Times in addition to other liberal media, and lives in a delusionary world of suppressed rage and self-appointed war hero vanity?

I guess, after the lastest info on McCain’s pandering, I’m going to have to add supporter of the US Communist Party and endorser of Atzlan.

I just gave them a call and reported the billboard sized MS-13 sign on the side of the store next to the Handy Dandy where I live. It’s going to be interesting in seeing how long it takes for it to be cleaned or painted over…

Greg, I know you’re not happy with John McCain….nor am I. However, for President, we have two choices — John McCain or Osama Obama.

If I vote for Obama, I lose. If I write in a third party candidate, I lose. If I refuse to vote and stay home, I let others make the decision for me and therefore, I lose. If I vote for McCain, I lose too, but the loss is less severe than supporting Obama.

    That’s the way I see it…any ideas?

I used to think the same way, however, if Obama wins, the Dems will control all three branches of the Federal Government. Do you want Obama nominating socialist Judges to the Supreme Court, with no power for the GOP to block the nominations. Obama will be free to nominate anyone he wants, for example any of the judges on the 9th Circuit Court.

Do you want to turn tail in Iraq? Do you enjoy your second Amendment rights? Do you enjoy Conservative talk radio? Do you enjoy lower taxes? Even if you only enjoy one of those items, it is important that you vote for against Obama and for John McCain(yes, I have issues with him too, but he is better than Obama, and a Federal Government run by the likes of the Nancy and her gang).

Do you want Obama paying more attention to the feelings and opinions of the UN and the rest of the World over Americans? Do you want International law to play a larger part in American Law?

Nobama and supporters give themselves too much credit. he may well find out just how limited his powers are. much damage can be done - look at the clinton years, but there are 2 generations of brainwashed, indoctrinated people who think “diversity” (socialism) is the answer to our problems, not being educated in what made this country great. we’re already there i’m afraid.

This is too grotesque for words - but think of this next time you want to purchase an item from Communist China or any of the other dog-murdering & eating countries.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25633945/

BEIJING - Canine cuisine is being sent to the doghouse during next months Beijing Olympic Games.

Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants, and Beijing tourism officials are telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

Waiters and waitresses should patiently suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau Vice Director Xiong Yumei.

    ‘Fragrant meat’
Dog, known in Chinese as xiangrou, or fragrant meat, is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

Beijing isnt the first Olympic host to slap a ban on the dish.

South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of foods deemed unsightly. After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.

Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio came to Tucson on Thursday evening, but the wildly polarized greeting he got at a Midtown book signing probably made him feel right at home.
America’s toughest sheriff was the hottest draw at the Barnes & Noble bookstore since the last Harry Potter book came out.
Outside the store’s front door, a sign read “Tonight! Joe Arpaio, America’s Toughest Sheriff” over a solemn-looking shot of Sheriff Joe from his new book, “Joe’s Law.”
Arpaio fans started lining up at noon to get tickets for the 60-some seats at the back of the store, between the shelves of Christian inspiration and graphic novels, for his appearance at a live radio talk show.
And they outnumbered protesters until well after his radio appearance started at 6 p.m.
Before the broadcast, Arpaio did a brief stand-up for TV crews and a circle of adoring fans outside the store. The lovefest didn’t last long as protester Pancho Medina, a bearded middle-aged man in a black flat-brimmed hat and wearing a “No More Deaths” button, repeatedly shouted, “You’re not welcome in Tucson, Arizona.”
Arpaio continued speaking, laughing and steadily raising his voice to be heard over Medina, but smiling as he did so. He’d clearly done this before.
Despite the insistent smile, Medina’s shouting and his supporters’ presence apparently got under his skin and Arpaio said, “You don’t know how stupid these people are.”
Protester Merle McPheeters, a soft-spoken teacher and a 28-year military veteran, quietly defended Medina’s right to speak when some of the sheriff’s fans tried to shout down Medina. McPheeters made it tough to yell at him by speaking in little more than a whisper.
After Arpaio went inside, the protesters milled around. There wasn’t much fire left without the sheriff, and the protesters talked to each other, reporters and the occasional surprised bookstore customer who wasn’t there to see Arpaio.
“We’re saddened to see Barnes & Noble offer a platform for hatred in our community,” said Sol Kelley-Jones, who said she was with Coalicion de Derechos Humanos, an immigrant-rights advocacy group
Her friend, Crystal Terriquez, wearing a white tank top that read “Deport Joe Arpaio,” seemed to think Kelley-Jones didn’t make the point strongly enough. “We don’t want Arpaio in our community,” said Terriquez, punching every word for emphasis.
Inside, the 60-some seats were taken long before the radio show started, and at least another 60 people nearly all apparently Arpaio fans jammed in as close as they could to the table where Arpaio sat with a KNST radio host.
Arpaio talked mainly about his reasons for using his department to enforce immigration laws, and about his conflicts with other politicians and activists over his aggressive anti-illegal-immigration comments and activities.
His fans were overwhelmingly in their 60s or older, white, including many couples. They cheered Arpaio’s statements and laughed at his wisecracks.
Outside waited the growing crowd of protesters, a mix of whites and Hispanics, from teenagers to elderly, more women than men.
Some carried pro-immigration signs. One had a pinata of Sheriff Joe in uniform, with pink handcuffs and pink underwear peeking up in the back above his belt.
At 6:30 p.m., halfway through the broadcast, protesters smashed the pinata, but it was mostly for their own amusement, as Joe’s fans were inside hanging on his every word.
Arpaio finished the show and began autographing his books.
Outside, the protesters began marching around the parking lot, chanting, “Hey hey, ho ho, Joe Arpaio’s got to go!” which seemed to confuse some of the customers going in and out of the nearby Macaroni Grill.
About 90 minutes after the show ended, some 70 or so people still waited in line to have Arpaio sign their books.
“No, I’m not surprised,” Arpaio supporter Rebecca White said of the crowd. “Everybody knows about Joe.”
White said she’d like to see Arpaio’s methods adopted in Pima County. A couple of men standing in line heard her proposal and raised it: “Make him state sheriff. Yeah,” they said.”Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” ………John Adams

Colleges crack down on illegal immigrants
    Published: July 7, 2008 at 10:44 AM

MCLEAN, Va., July 7 (UPI) — Lawmakers in several U.S. states have taken actions making it more difficult for undocumented immigrants to go to college, officials say.

Since 2006, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma haven’t given tuition benefits to people whose parents took them to the United States unlawfully, even if the students attended state schools their entire lives, USA Today reported Monday.

South Carolina is the only state to ban undocumented immigrants from attending public universities and colleges, the newspaper said.

“The new trend is to kick illegal aliens out of college altogether,” William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, which is against taxpayer subsidies for illegal immigrants, told USA Today.

Critics say the college crackdown penalizes students for choices their parents made.

Providing support to immigrants is “the right thing to do even if it’s unpopular,” said North Carolina state Rep. Pricey Harrison, D-Greensboro, who proposed a bill to stop state schools from inquiring about students’ immigration status.

    Police arrest suspected serial rapist

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — Police have arrested a man they are calling a serial rapist.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Miami Beach Police announced the capture of 29-year-old Arturo Soto and asked the public if anyone out there may have been victimized by this same man. So far they think he is responsible for at least two rapes and one attempted rape.

Police apprehended Soto Wednesday night after an attempted sexual battery. The chef at the Maya Tapas and Grill restaurant, near where the latest attack occurred, said graphic surveillance video outside the restaurant, which police have confiscated as evidence, looked like something out of a horror movie.

Police said Soto reportedly lured a woman into an alley at 14th Street and Collins Avenue where he punched her bloody and fled on foot after he became nervous.

Police officers caught up with him soon after, and, authorities said, he confessed to the crime. During the course of the questioning of Soto, authorities determined he is also a suspect in the November 2006 rape of a woman behind the Presidential Hotel, located at 1423 Collins Avenue, also in an alley.

Police added that he is also a suspect in the more recent sexual battery of a woman who was visiting from out of town. This attack occurred on June 24, outside a Miami Beach parking garage, again in an alley, near 919 Collins Avenue.

According to the police report on the June 24 attack, the attacker also roughed up the victim, pushing her down and sexually assaulting her. She then ran to a nearby parking garage to ask for help. “She came to me running and screaming and crying, asking for help,” said Jairo Arenas, a parking lot attendant at the parking garage on 10th Street and Collins Avenue. “She was telling me that she was raped close by.”

Bond was first set for Soto at $87,500, but Judge Lawrence A. Schwartz raised it to $240,000, when police said Soto was in the U.S. illegally from Guatemala and may be a flight risk.

Again, if you or anyone you know recognize Soto from a similar rape, police would like to hear from you.

Call Clinton what you want, but he was smart to not tilt to the left too much. As I said that will not be the case under Obama. The damage done under Obama will not be fixed for a long time if ever.
