"I have often heard him (Nohe) say that bad projects don’t make it out of his office."
What's the definition of *bad*? Developers who haven't contributed to him, or aren't his friends?

Just the Facts, you are indeed a true conservative. The pro-growth types care nothing about quality of life issues and common working man, only for corporate profits, no matter what the cost.

anon, those figures are absolutely shocking for an off-election year! Even the scumbags in Loudoun County weren't that brazen about accepting that kind of money in an off year. Disgusting.

anonymouse:
"I have often heard him say that bad projects don’t make it out of his office."

That is because he's never met a project that he considered bad! Nohe has voted for to support more housing units than any sitting supervisor on the entire board including Jenkins, Caddigan and Covington (Hilda used to beat Marty's record, but now she's gone). And most of those were not in his district, leaving everyone else stuck with the impact.

Do you really think he takes all those donations and then tells the developers to take a hike? Here are the ones from the last few months from VPAP.org and this isn't even an election year:

$5,000 Clemente Development Co Inc (Vienna)
$5,000 Jon M Peterson (Fairfax Station)
$3,150 C Daniel Clemente (McLean)
$3,000 Gary D Rappaport (Vienna)
$1,000 Theodore D Britt (Great Falls)

Except for Ted Britt, every single name on that list is a developer. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Nohe is absolutely in the pocket of developers.

Nohe got pressure from the chamber now he is back peddling on the illegal immigration issue. He is trying to please everyone by talking out of both sides of his mouth. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. He is the new hero for some people, well not me. I will NEVER vote for him again!

I don't understand these criticisms of Nohe. He supports the efforts of Neighborhood Services, and in fact has suggested that they be re-categorized as under the Public Safety strategic goal, underlining the importance of property code enforcement and its relation to the public health, safety and welfare. Furthermore, there have been foreclosures on [his street], and his district has not been untouched by the real estate market downturn. And characterizing him as easy on developers seems incorrect as well; I have often heard him say that bad projects don't make it out of his office. He makes it clear there is a lot of work to be done to make it acceptable and the developers drop the case or change it substantially. If it makes it to the Board, it's because he negotiates the projects into ones that are beneficial to the community. It's easy to be anti-growth and marginalize yourself by voting no on all land use applications. It's much harder to wrestle with the case and exact changes from the developers, making the application one that is actually good for the community. Truly being hard on developers is forcing them to propose good projects and rewarding them when they do. It makes a much bigger impact on the development patterns than being a sure no-vote.

[His street] certainly seems to be blissfully unaffected by the property blight issues that are affecting many neighborhoods in the rest of the county.

I suppose Marty would take a different tune if he lived on, say, Lomond Drive (ignoring, of course, the fact that he would not be the Coles district supervisor if that were so).

Rick – don’t get me wrong. I’m with you. I’ve had the same problems as everyone else of illegals overcrowding homes in my neighborhood, packing their driveways and our streets with 12+ cars for a three-bedroom house, transients damaging our cars and disappearing before the police can do anything about it, loud music blaring from their cars and stereos, etc. The situation has improved and some of the flop houses are for sale now but the problems have not gone away entirely.

These are the basic quality of life issues that apparently Marty feels don’t matter. If I could afford a big, private house with lots of space like Marty and Wally, perhaps I would not be so concerned about them either. However, as soon as Marty and Wally take public office, our problems become their problems. Their interests, however, lie more in keeping their donors, the developers, and other special interests happy.

This is a chicken-and-egg argument. Did greedy developers or illegals come first? I think that small, local developers who had been part of the community and cared about it dominated the market until the past decade or two. They hired local, experienced, trained construction people at fair wages. I have nothing against developers, per se. We all live in homes built by developers and one of my own family members is a custom home builder in another part of the state; but he meets the description I gave above.

The problems started when the big, mass production developers came in. They don’t give a squat about our community. They buy off local politicians (check out www.vpap.org to see for yourself), hire the cheapest labor they can find, throw up houses, condos, etc. as fast as they can and then move elsewhere, like locusts.

We all know that middle class wages and standards of living are falling in this country. The main culprit is corporations shifting jobs to low-wage, third-world workers. This occurs largely through global outsourcing. However, in industries such as construction, hospitality, etc. where the jobs can’t be outsourced overseas, cheap illegal labor is imported while the politicians (from the White House all the way to the Prince William County BOCS) who have been bought off look the other way and refuse to enforce our laws.

Instead of an experienced carpenter who is a long-time member of our community with a family here, our houses are now being built with the services of an untrained, illiterate illegal. That carpenter is now greeting shoppers at Wal-Mart and is unable to send his kids to college.

Anon – thanks for your kind words. I do live in one of those districts but have no idea what my schedule will be like then. No matter what, I am willing to devote some time to help elect someone who shares our values whether it is me or someone else. Maybe sometime Greg can get us all together.

That's fine and dandy but to me the problem is illelgal aliens walking around lawlessly and untracked, and in overcrowded houses, eroding the tax base and ruining quality of life.

Someone started circulating flyers in Mexico telling people to come here. You might blame overdevelopment for creating a climate in which that could happen. But to me the core problem is the influx of illegal aliens. Get rid of the illegal aliens and leave us "overdeveloped" or having too many beds to your liking, I'm okay with that.

Perhaps Maureen should not be included in the list of those gunning for Corey and John. I like her most of the time. She's not a consistent rubber stamp for the developers like Nohe, Covington and Jenkins. Principi signed the pledge to protect the Rural Crescent and voted against the guy wanting to run sewer to his property in the Rural Crescent, so he may work out. His dislike for Corey and John is obvious, however. My thinking on Maureen was based on her personal differences with Corey also and the animosities between the two, which I wish they would both get over.

The focus of debate in Prince William County will be returning to development in a year or two, as it was before the housing market collapse and mortgage crisis. Our economic problems now do not stem from the Rule of Law resolution – that’s absurd and such claims have no basis in fact. Illegal aliens contributed to the housing market problems in Prince William County, but are not the main cause of them.

We’re in this shape today because of irresponsible development policies of previous boards that created a glut of residential units in the County. In particular, under Connaughton the developers got virtually everything they wanted except in one case. In that instance, the Brentswood development proposal was so outrageous that citizens and responsible elected officials of both parties rose up to stop it. The developers went for broke in that case, however, because they had Connaughton, and his trusty sidekicks, Wally Covington and Marty Nohe, on their side.

Anyone who understands economics 101 can figure this out. Developers, aided and abetted by a willing BOCS, overbuilt and created a glut of housing. It worked for a while as long as the crooked mortgage brokers were writing loans to people, included illegal aliens, who should never have received them. They also sold “exotic” mortgages with teaser rates, resets, fees, etc. to qualified borrowers who didn’t understand what they were getting into and are now paying the price. When those scams fell apart, demand for housing crashed and we were left with the housing surplus. The only way to correct a surplus is for prices to fall, which is the process we’re going through now.

The housing market and the economy will turn around in the next year or two. Moreover, Prince William County is seen region-wide as the bedroom community of Northern Virginia, and has now an inventory of over 30,000 residential units (approved units that the developers can build anytime they want). The developers will be back in force for approval of even more. They will want a sycophant board like they had before, and that means getting rid of Corey and John. Let’s hope Maureen, Frank and Mike wear white hats too.

The illegal alien problem is tied inextricably to development. Some illegals work in restaurants and other service industries, but the bulk of them come here for work in construction. As soon as the housing market turns around, the developers, the Regional Chamber, Marty, Wally, John, etc. are going to want a BOCS that again rubber stamps their plans, trashes the Rural Crescent, eliminates proffers and impact fees, and does not enforce the law against their cheap, illegal work force.

The result for the vast majority of Prince William County citizens will be a return to increasing congestion, rising taxes from more residential units that don’t pay their own way, more crowding in schools, and a return to the illegal alien problems of the past as our neighborhoods face the return of the developers’ cheap labor.

I've been disgusted with Nohe ever since spoke at Colgans glorified photo op at the Manassas VRE Station just days before the 2007 election, Bob FitzSimmonds should finance a primary opponent in the next supervisors race.

Completely clueless as to what the perceived problem with Mr. Nohe's comments or actions might be. It struck me when I read his comment that it was exquisitely crafted to cause no offense to anyone on any side of any issue. Is selling appliances a subtle way of encouraging illegal immigration? Rick Bentley thinks so. It takes a more subtle mind than mine to see that connection.

Advocator is very clear as to how far short of his/her goal the "Rule of Law" (I always have found that a very giggle-inducing label) Resolution fell. Advocator would like local cops doing sidewalk stops of every human to check them for federal immigration compliance. Bobby's got his back. Doggone liberals. Send them to Constitutional re-education camps run by real conservatives.

Not in my community, please. I no doubt would have been shipped back to East Anglia (if not Jutland or Thuringia) weeks ago.

There's nothing about the Constitution or the Revolution that requires the former Colonial Masters' tongue to be spoken here. Democracy demands that all the citizens understand what the hell is going on. The current generation of immigrants is assimilating at a pace that is at least as fast as the 19th Century crowd of illegals managed. The seductive allure of a vulgar pop culture based on the English language will sweep all before it. Just spend a week in a hotel in Tashkent watching MTV and you'll see how fast it's all happening.

Marty said: "nor have I suggested that I expect that anything will make me change my mind about that in the foreseeable future."

Huh? Do they send politicians to doublespeak 101?
