11th District Battle

By Greg L | 4 November 2008 | Fairfax County, US Congress, Prince William County | 17 Comments

UPDATE: Projection as of 9:24 - The corrupt Connolly wins in the 11th District.  Prince William County failed to come through for Fimian, with Connolly winning 51-47 in Prince William.  Disgusting.

Keith Fiminan needed to have a strong margin in Prince William County in order to win the 11th District, and the early returns (with about a third of the vote in) shows that’s not happening.  This isn’t over, but so far it’s looking as if the abysmal Gerry Connolly is the likely winner in the 11th District.

Stay tuned… There are a lot more precincts to report…

Overheard in the line waiting to vote, said by a young woman who works for the Fairfax County Police “My boss wants me to vote for Connolly so we can get him out of Fairfax County”. Nice . . . Fairfax dumps their garbage on the rest of us in the 11th.

I trust that the Board of Elections of each jurisdiction is planning on properly screening all those affidavits signed by individuals in lieu of proper identification, given the concern regarding ineligible voters BEFORE the election.

Actually, I know several people who thought voting for Connolly was a good idea to get him out of Fairfax County! With him gone, maybe we could get Pat Herrity in as Chairman. That would be a trade up for Fairfax County residents, but I agree with Mr. Hunter that it is pretty much like dumping our problems on the rest of the 11th. I voted for Fimian.

I wonder if Fairfax didn’t like Connolly why didn’t they help in getting him off of the Board a long time ago????? I wonder who the Police came out and supported?????

We lost a fine young man in losing Fimian.. I am not sure he had the local Repb. working for him as they should have.???

The Repb. has really lost something in the past 10 years. They have in some cases put up and supported the wrong candidate and lost a seat by doing this.

Many of the volunteers worked their heads and feet off to bring a victory and for this I am sad .

All citizens need to be aware of what will be taking place and make your opinions be heard all year long.

It is necessary to vote in the good and the bad Democrats to stack Congress to create a one party Federal System where Congress and the President can work together. However, the Senate is still not filbuster-free (provided Republicans behave themselves and don’t put themselves in a compromising position that requires them to step down).

Gridlock wears on voters and this is their way of saying, “if you can’t get the job done, we’ll put someone in who can.” It’s not like the sitting Congress wasn’t given more than adequate warning.

This is the governing party America’s voters have chosen - with the largest voter turnout ever. It is ours for the next four years.

Looking at these results, I’ve concluded Fimian MUST run again. He did an admirable job in the most difficult of environments.

It won’t take much to switch these results in a lower turnout, mid-term election and with Connolly having to run on 2 years of crazy left-wing votes instead of his usual hot air

Fimian is a right wing extreme nut, he will never get elected to that seat.

Prince William County voted in favor of Gerry Connolly by a margin of 52% to 46% for Fimian. While it was somewhat more lopsided in Farifax, the facts are clear. The residents of Prince William County willingly elected Gerry Connolly to the US House of Representatives.

This blog is infected with cyber vermin who cannot stand to look at their own actions as they ridicule others. As people on the blog put forth virtual psycho-babble based on voices they heard at the polls (are you sure those voices weren’t just in your head?), they try to blame Fairfax County for the defeat of Keith Fimian. Meanwhile, readily available election returns confirm that the residents of Prince William preferred Connolly over Fimian by about 6%.

I will assume that there will soon be a posting describing how residents of FAirfax County used some type of mind control to force the PWC voters to pull the Connolly ballot.

Jeff Frederick led the Rs to overwhelming defaet on Tuesday, great job Jeff. Let’s see: Obama wins PWC by 16,000 (Webb won by 2,000, Kaine won by 2,000), Connolly wins PWC and the 11th seat; Warner destroys Gilmore (marshall would have been a better candidate than the no-show Gilmore); Virgil Goode loses his seat by 31 votes in a congressional district that is 60% red; and Thelma Drake gets demolished in Tidewater. So Jeff managed to turn over 3 congressional seats, the senate seat and the Presidency, wow, please make Jeff Chair for life. I’m a little surprised he survived the central committee vote last month, although surviving by 5 votes isn’t much of an endorsement. I did like his diatribe against General Powell, accusing him of being a traitor for speaking his mind. Powell served this country with distiction during his career, Jeff on the otherhand is merely another chicken hawk, fearful of serving in the military but would be more than willing to send others in to harms way, kind of like Bush, Cheney, Phil Gramm and a long list of other R chicken hawks.

Harry, You maybe right about somethings but your head is in the clouds and you are not getting enough air to make your brain work.

Fimian most definately is a class act candidate and hopefully he will return. But I would tell him not to count on the PW Repb. Committee. Get his own people and don’t reley on the Far Right,as they will be the ones who does him in. Use your own judgement and get your team lined up.

Many people could see this coming in the last 5 years,so it’s not really a big surprise, even tho we don’t like it. But the tide will change.

I just wish we had better candidates for all of the offices.

Gerry Connolly got my union’s endorsement. The day after our letters went out to our members, he and all the FC BOS voted in support of furloughing County workers to address the budget shortfall. Heaven forfend they should cut back on their precious entitlement programs or eliminate programs we don’t need (like marketing the County overseas or whatever that EDA does). Later letters we sent made no mention of Connolly. We just ignored him, but he got that first mention and that still stings. We had no reason to endorse Fimian. He gave us no reason. The only people who voted against furloughing the County workers were the two Republicans on the board. If Fimian had been smart, he would have had some of these endorsements to claim, instead of whining later that unions didn’t back him. Still, I know we were played by Connolly. Fimian made first-timer mistakes. He made it about us versus them too much and I think he has a somewhat outdated world view of who Republicans are. The people hanging around in the Country club tend to be the Democrats these days. He played to an archaic view of Republicans. And he avoided issues he should have just dealt with early on. That opened the door to scatching attacks (many of which crossed the line into bigotry) from the Democratic party. If you are going to run for office, tell people what you think about a range of issues and address their concerns and differences up front (Tim Kaine is pro-life and a Catholic, but he made it clear that he wasn’t planning to try to criminalize abortion; Keith Fimian could have done the same thing, but he chose to ignore the issue entirely until forced to it by the other side, and at the very end). He chose to focus on energy. The American people have no memory for energy issues. When gas dropped below the magical $4 mark, no one cared much. He had no other issue to fall back on. Vote for me because I was almost an NFL player doesn’t cut it. It’s a shame, because he’d have been a better Congressman for us than Connolly.

My husband was out of town this week and in preparation he did an absentee ballot. Never a huge fan of politics, he doesn’t pay a lot of attention to the local elections (doesn’t help that he’s been out of town more than in for the past several months), so he asked for quick summaries on the candidates listed. When he got to Connolly, I told him if he voted for Connolly, it would be grounds for a divorce. I’m not sure if that counts as voter intimidation or not since I wasn’t wielding a weapon. ;)

Folks, when you go to the polls next November, just remember that “Harry” represents Paul Nichols, the 51st District representative to the Virginia HOD.

Up to you Paul, but in the interest of political “futurism,” I don’t think you need his kind of help; it just might be wise for you to rein him in a bit. :)

    Here we go again.

Another election, same old problems. Same old consultants, same results which are losses.

We need to look at the political-industrial complex and hold their feet to the fire.

Here are some recent problems with direct mail, TV and radio campaigns in northern Virginia.

Fiamian spent 400,000 plus on TV services from Stevens Reed Curcio & Potholm. Were the TV ads any good? Using more grassroots and less TV might have helped Fimian win.

Fimian used Carlyle Gregory as a consultant. Again maybe too much money was spent on TV and radio and not enough money on grassroots.

It seems like very little was done in Prince William county. The biggest complaint I heard around the district is that the Fimian campaign rarely answered the phone and didn’t return calls.

It is kinda hard to build a successful campaign when the campaign and candidate appear to be in hiding.

I don’t know how he became so successful if he operated his business like that.

TV and Radio and direct mail is mostly falling on deaf ears.

People are beginning to understand that buying ads on radio and TV stations to get a few swing voters to switch to “our side” is problematic. Even throwing direct mail at them can be overkill.

Meanwhile the Dems were bringing in hundreds of volunteers to go door to door in these districts effectively targeting the most likely voters and personally persuading voters to switch sides.

“There are those of us who think you should spend campaign money on alternative grassroots media and grassroots organizers in these swing districts.

Hire real grassroots people who can deliver the votes. If you dropped your expensive political media consultants and their ads you would have bundles to spend on real organizing. TV is fun and we all want to be on it but you need to show the proof that these media consultants can swing voters to your side via expensive TV ads.”

We could spend money to build the party instead of lining the pockets of expensive consultants so that they can stay in 4 star hotels, have expensive vacation homes etc.

Until 2009, when we lose again. I hope we learn some lessons.

All Fimian had was an air war game. Lot of very expensive DC TV when less expensive more effective grassroots politics would have been called for.

It was kinda sad to see the candidate on the last weekend of the campaign all by himself when he spoke at the John McCain rally.

Both Fimian and Gilmore were by themselves with no staff or volunteer entourage to meet the voters and recruit them.

No matter how much money you have, when you run an isolated campaign where the public has little interaction, you are bound to lose.

Future candidates should be careful about who they bring on board to run their campaigns. We keep getting the same jokers over and over again running losing campaigns for the republicans and destroying what is left of the republican party in Northern Virginia.
