Election Day Open Thread

I’ll be watching events in Virginia from afar while I’m on a business trip, but you can keep other readers up to date on what is going on on election day.  Are there irregularities at the polls?  Are local election officials doing a great job at dealing with the turnout as I expect?  When you voted, what number voter were you?

Whatever happens tonight, let’s try to come back together as Americans. I pledge as an Obama supporter that if McCain wins, I will do my part.

I wish all of you well

I was at my polling place 45 minutes before opening, and there was a line. Once the doors opened, it was about 20 minutes and I was done. I think I was voter 86. This was about what I had experienced in 2004. Just from that little slice of time, I reckon Manassas will have only slightly higher turnout this election. If this holds true, McCain will win here.

My husband went early in Manassas Park (left at 5:45) and was home by 7. He said the line was long, but once he was done, so was the line. Most of the chatter overheard while waiting was about the local board election. The overall feeling seemed to be that the current board is totally useless. Hopefully with large voter turnout, the results will reflect that sentiment…

Man that line at the rec center in the park was nuts at 5:45. There were already well over 100 people in front of me at 5:45. Took me 2 hours. Anyone with a last name between A-F waited twice as long as everyone else. It was a clusterF and was pretty poorly run but they were doing the best they could I suppose.

Library precinct took 1 hour 20 minutes to get through the line beginning at 8 am. At 7 am the line was twice as long as it was when I came back at 8 am.

There was a good showing from all groups. What was fascinating to watch was the “voter protection” group that was allowed to set up a table and chairs inside the 40. I had never seen that before, they had in the past been outside the line. More interesting was the vehicles from DC there. One minute they had Obama stickers on (lady in orange) the next they took off their stickers and were with the “Voter Protection” people then next they were handing out coffee and crackers inside the 40. After standing in line for more than an hour the LAST thing I needed was coffee or water if you know what I mean.

This was by far the longest I have ever had to wait to vote but it was well worth it!!!

    Get out and VOTE!!!!

Here in Yorktown, VA, the wait was 10 minutes or less. The nice volunteers at the polls scrutinized my voter registration card and VA driver’s license, verified my name and address, gave me the choice of a paper or electronic ballot and I was done and on my way.

It seems to me that the MSM made this a racist election. The parties insulted our intelligence with two of the worst candidates I have ever seen and expected us to be supportive. Neither candidate is supportive of deporting illegal aliens, both parties allowed 20 million illegal aliens to invade our communities with no federal support or enforcement, allowing them to take advantage of us and laugh in our faces by protesting in our streets! Neither party will end the war. Neither has presented any real solutions to our problems. The only answer to our broken system is a constitutional amendment outlining term limits. Six years for members of congress during a lifetime, period.

    Standard apologies to those offended.

I voted in Reston in Fairfax County this morning. A long line at 6:00 am but a short line when I was finished at 7:00. We early voters created a crowd by trying to avoid one.

I was a poll monitor at the Bennett school poll. When the poll opened at 6 AM there were several hundred in line. But by 7:30 things slowed down and by 8:30 there were only a few voters. So the turnout was not as large as I would have expected.

I voted at Dean this morning about 8:45. Waited in line for 10 minutes, was only that long because someone a few people in front of me didn’t bring their id and had to fill out a form. Other than that was in and out. Now the line next to me was a little longer but was moving quickly. My parents voted at Hayden and were in and out in 5 minutes around 8:15. So far so good.

As for the Obama Rally last night, I did notice some trash along my court. My street was packed out with cars last night, some parked the wrong direction, some blocking driveways. People were still parking there around 10:30 last night.

I arrived at Dean at around 6:10 this morning and was out by 7:10. Took longer than anticipated. First, you’re lined up in the main artery, which separates into multiple lines according to last name initial for the verification process, then back into a single artery for the machines.

On a separate topic, it appears someone hacked into the Provost’s e-mail at my school (GMU) and sent a university-wide e-mail announcing that election day has been moved to Nov. 5 and “sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.” This election is bringing all the nutjobs out of the woodwork.

Quick question, I.B.O.B.: “Hero” of what? I suppose what constitutes as being a hero these days has drastically changed from what it once was and should still be. And, yes, we’re all aware of last night’s event. The loud, creepy sound of “chanting” from the direction of the Fairgrounds made its way into my bedroom last night as I was trying to sleep. That must have been the source of my nightmares, in addition to the disturbing possibility of an Obama presidency.

About ten the Library on Opitz had a line outside and little parkint if any for the voters trying to get into the parking lot. They were directing and doing as good a job as possible.

We’re deeply worried about this election. Every vote will count in VA. Three of us here went to the Post Office on Thursday and paid $18 each to overnight our absentee ballots to VA (with the proper witness signatures and addresses). Those of you on the ground in VA, Please be vigilant and make sure that military absentee votes are NOT tossed out !!

The reports of the Black Panthers intimidating voters at the polls in Philly is very alarming.

My husband stated that when he was in Iraq he had NO credibility trying to talk to the Iraqis he was advising on the issues of elections and border security with Syria……they would just mock him about voter fraud and the Mexican border…….

This has to change. It is time for a national, secure voter ID. I am hoping that goodness and decency prevail over fraud and intimidation.

    Paying taxes is Patriotic?

I pay a HUGE amount of taxes, monthly, quarterly and annually to local, state and federal government.

Throughout the year, I make donations to support local non-profits in my local county because they directly contribute to quality of life in our community.

If Government takes more in taxes, then I no longer be able to do both.
So you want me to give it all to the government and they will re-distribute my money as they see fit. And how is that Patriotic?

  39. I Bleed Obama Blue said on 4 Nov 2008 at 3:26 pm:

RED - Our progressive tax system ALREADY redistrubutes income from those who pay more in taxes to those who pay less. That’s why a state like Nebraska receives $1.12 in government spending for each dollar Nebraskains pay in taxes. As I stated before, depending on the nature and amount of your income, you may or may not pay more in taxes under and Obama administration than you now do.

Paying taxes is patriotic because it enables the government to fuction.

If Obama is so far ahead, then why are you here arguing with conservatives?

The Obama team is worried in PA&VA, and rightly so.

The PUMAs are going to have the last laugh.

“Wealth redistribution” is not patriotic. Adam Smith must be turning over in his grave.

There is a HUGE difference between levying taxes to pay for necessary services for the common good and socialist re-engineering of the economy.

Having grown up under a cradle-to-grave nanny welfare state, I much prefer lower taxes and CHOOSING to give my money via charity and non-profits that make a difference without the middle man government waste.

Big government = less choice & less freedom.

PS: Why is it, all these ex-pats from NY, NY & CA who move to VA to flee from their corrupt, dying, inefficient high tax states then want to make VA into the image of the states they fled? Absolutely ridiculous. If NY, NJ, CA et al are so great and such a positive model, then why the exodus from these high-tax nirvanas to low-tax, limited government states? Went over at 5:30 am to Woodbridge High School. Maybe 45 people ahead of us. Up to 150 in line when the doors opened at 6. Seemed to me about like the last 3 presidential elections I have voted in. Whoever was running the polling place there was doing a fabulous job and deserves a huge pat on the back. Everyone was checked in by matching IDs faces and addresses against a master list. Then given a voting receipt and sent into the voting line to get your computer card. It was very well organized and did not seem susceptible to fraud at all. Voters were under control of the election folks at all times. The folks working there were very friendly and business like. All the voters were quiet and respectful. It took about 30 minutes from when the doors first opened to get out. The line was moving faster when I left I guess as the election folks got in the groove.

The way this was run was what our elections should always look like. I have a hard time understanding why there is such an easy acceptance of voter fraud, felons voting and the suppression of the military vote by the democrat party. There must be at least some ethical folks on the other side of the aisle who think this is wrong also. No?

wondering if anybody else ran into this potential “glitch?”

spouse voted at 6am at Haydon elementary in the city where the machines were set up with two ballots — Citywide or Presidential –??

after selecting Citywide — you got to vote for president, senator and congressperson.

so — after selecting WOLF — screen verification came back the vote had been for FEDER??

    WTH???

managed to get that corrected. good thing paying attention.

fast forward nearly four hours later and guess what??

same “glitch” happened for my vote.

neither of us thought anything of it.

until we compared experiences and discovered the identical issue had occurred??

    is something up??

just in case, we’ve alerted the Wolf campaign….

Went and voted during my lunch break at Pattie Elem and the line went pretty quickly. I affirmed my id rather than present a credential and was processed very quickly.

A voter had complained earlier that the machines (screens) were visible to people in line and we couldn’t vote for about 8-10 minutes while they spun the machines around, applied duct tape to the cables to keep them tied down as best they could and to put tape on the ground telling people where to go.

All in all it was a good experience. Voted 2 Repubs and 1 Dem tonight. The Precinct Captain seems to run Pattie very smoothly. Haven’t had an issue voting there ever.

I saw one guy at the polling station (PWC) with a shirt with a mushroom cloud on it with “Made In America” above it and “Tested In Japan” below it.

I told him that that was a rather amusing but thoroughly politically incorrec t-shirt he was wearing and he said he wore it so he wouldn’t be asked who he voted for on the way out.

We went to Parkside Middle School at 5:30 pm. No line. A crowd of bored to death activists outside. We voted. Then in accordance with tradition I changed the “VO” to “FAR” on my “I Voted” sticker.

We heard that Chick fil A was giving out free chicken sandwiches to anyone with an “I Voted” sticker so we went there. They gave me a chicken sandwich even though my sticker was altered.

Load your guns and keep ‘em by your bed tonight. All you have to do is read some of the hate filled radical left crap here tonight to predict what will happen when these socialist nanny state morons lose.

BTW, the McCain rally in Woodbridge drew 15,000. I was there and it was awesome. Trust me that number is spot on. The rally the idiot obomanation had at Nissan was expected to draw 30,000 but only 10,000 obamazombies showed.

    Volunteered at Metz all morning.

No issues other than a few people confused over the “city-wide ballot” thing. We let a Wolf campaign officer know that some people may have missed their opportunity to vote for the Congressman.

Obama volunteer got all up in our faces when some volunteers started handing out actually-informative information to people, as opposed to just the sample ballots. Of course, she didn’t seem to think there was a problem with her always going into the polling place to “help” people get situated.

Met a delegation from Portugal who was in the U.S. observing the election. They were wonderful folks and were very fascinated with our whole process.

Heavy turnout but never much of a line. The poll workers did a fantastic job today and deserve our thanks.

At work today, a guy a work with had an “I voted” sticker on his shirt that had part of the bottom missing. I asked about it, and he said that the bottom half said “I voted” in SPANISH. He ripped it off and told them he could keep it.
    Speak ENGLISH dammit.

    I.B.O.B,

Re: “Village People Alum”…Does that thought excite you?

Actually, I’m the wife of a naval officer (15 years of service). Sorry if this fact dispels any fantasies you may have harbored about a possible connection to the Village People.

You weren’t able to sufficiently answer my “hero” question. I would give you props (or whatever the current slang is these days) for a good effort, but it was merely chanting on your part. Obama may be many things, but a hero he is not.

those fatties on the other site are really living it up today, you would have thought they won the election for Obama. Sounds like a damn Scientologist convention over there. Change, Change, Change when all I want is a damn dollar. For some reason every time I hear the word “change” now I actually hear “tax” instead, must be something wrong there.

Once all the touch feelie breast feeding stops over there hopefully that blog will die off and we can discuss some real issues and solutions here without those nuts intruding but hey, just like king arthur needed a court jester these village idiots do provide some entertainment.

After it’s all said and done Elena and Alanna are still fat and KG is flat out disgusting and mean. Barrack Obama in the white house is not going to change that unless he puts them on a mandatory exercise program and closes all the Krispy Kremes, 5 guys and Mcdonalds in a 200 mile radius but I doubt that’s going to happen.

Voting went well…got there about 9am after dropping my kids off at daycare (boss was nice enough to let me work from home) and was in and out of there in less than 10 minutes. I was voter #204 in the M-R line (wasn’t sure what numbers they were on for the other three lines)…my neighbor was there campaigning (at the required distance from the door) and she said that I just missed the long line…from before 6am until just before 9am, the line was out the door and around the school building.

The gal in front of me was a first-time voter…had her ID and her voter’s registration card and looked a little nervous. When the volunteer checked the girl in, she announced to the whole gymnasium, “we have a new voter here!” and everyone…the volunteers and all the voters (including those actively voting) all cheered and clapped for her. Everything went smooth as usual.
