Warner Wins Senate

By Greg L | 4 November 2008 | Virginia Politics, US Senate | 10 Comments

Fox News is reporting at 7:10 that Mark Warner has won his Senate race.  Not much of a surprise here, although it’s somewhat depressing that a tax hike like Warner can cruise to victory so easily.

I wonder how this would have turned out if Bob Marshall was the Republican nominee.  I daresay he couldn’t have done much worse.

Well, I’m disappointed…..but where the heck WAS Gilmore, anyway? I saw how many TV ads for Warner, and maybe one for Gilmore. Looks like the Republican party just abandoned him.

Gilmore’s failed presidential run signaled that the Senate was viewed as a consulation prize. Had he not diverted himself so long from the Senate race, he might have had a chance. He certainly destroyed Warner in the debates, but didn’t have the resources to get a coherent message out.

Hard to say how anybody could have done worse.

Gilmore was AWOL from this election. I guess the Republicans wrote it off as hopeless when it came time for funding. Maybe they are spending all their money trying to convince Jim Webb to “come back to the new Republican Party”.

I’m sure that Marshall wouldn’t have fared more than a few percentage points worse.

The election here was deemed worthless when the Republicans did not have /did not want a primary for the Senate Candidate.

The Repb. Party in P.W. is to blame for alot of things. Always do not want a Primary as a select group thinks they know best, but they don’t.

Locally they didn’t care for Gilmore and that goes back a few years.

Marshall needs to stay where he is,he can not win a seat elsewhere and the locals will dump him when it comes to funds.

We need fresh candidates that have shown they can bring the crowds and we need Primaries not Mass/Conventions.

    We need to wake up.

Actually, I think Bob Marshall would have done better, the despised and hated Gilmore was a no show during the campaign, that certainly would not have been the case for Bob, if he didn’t have the $ to do mailings, etc, he would have “made news” which would be carried by the media. Gilmore really didn’t seem to be interested in campaigning, for whatever reason.

The idology of less government when it came to vdot was disastorouse for us in The Future Great State Of Northern VA. Our county generated tax reciepts go to the rest of the state to pave their roads!!!! Oh sorry no money for you because you allow the groth? Southside virginia poitical manipulation!!!! We are a dillon state and so be it. If Fauquire and waren come in to commute on our roads and pollute our air should they not pay for it too? Am I stupid or just a dumb A when people in our state get a tax break for a damn alpacka farm on 50 acres with a 1.5 million dolar mansion on it? And we in nova pay for there roads and schools because they are property tax deprived? What side of the fence are you on!

Everyone also remembers Gilmore promising to eliminate the car tax as part of his earlier tactic to getting elected before becoming Governor. It may have gotten lowered but even Conservatives know you can’t pave roads without a car tax.

WashPo reported Gilmore ran out of campaign funds.
That’s not to say he couldn’t at least show up at a local events to glad-hand folks…like highschool football games…last check was that admission would be low-cost or free.
