Happy Veterans Day
By Greg L | 11 November 2008 | Patriotism | 18 Comments
To all my fellow veterans, happy Veterans Day.
To those who might not remember why this day was chosen to honor those who served, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the guns finally fell silent in “The Great War” now known as World War One. This day was chosen to honor those who served during the utter horror of that conflict, and has become the day to honor those who have served in war and in peace to protect and preserve this great nation.
We are the home of the free because of the brave.

Joseph,
Are you nuts? The last war that immigrants played a major role in was the War Between the States, and those were not illegal aliens. The vast majority of our current service members are Native Americans, and no I’m not talking about American Indians.
Greg –
I am Mrs. Wolverine. I am not a blogger. Both I and my husband are Vietnam Era veterans. In fact, I was his military nurse when he came home on a medevac plane. I want to thank you so much for your message about Veterans Day on this blog. I would also like to remember especially all those young Marines I cared for when they came home from Vietnam, some so horribly wounded that it set a young nurse near to tears in her private moments. I hope and pray that they all went on to useful and happy lives. God bless every one of them.
All veterans and their families have moments of remembrance, some with memories that stretch back through many wars. With your indulgence, I would like to express such a moment dedicated to one of those veterans who did not make it home to his family:
THIS IS A MESSAGE TO A YOUNG MAN NAMED CHESTER FROM A NIECE WHO WAS TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER HIM BUT LOVES HIM NEVERTHELESS. UNCLE, WE FINALLY FOUND OUT THE DETAILS ON HOW YOU DIED. WE CANNOT IMAGINE YOUR THOUGHTS AT THAT MOMENT WHEN, AS YOU TRIED TO CARRY YOUR WOUNDED COMRADE FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO SAFETY, YOU WERE FIRST WOUNDED BY RIFLE FIRE. STILL, YOU ROSE UP AND CONTINUED TO TRY TO SAVE YOUR COMRADE UNTIL THAT NAZI TANK SHELL FINALLY FOUND YOU. YOU PASSED FROM US ON THE SPOT WHERE YOU FELL. FROM THE REPORTS WE HAVE SEEN, YOUR FELLOW SOLDIERS SAID THAT YOU WERE A LEADER AND A MAN OF UTMOST COURAGE, AN EXAMPLE TO YOUR MEN IN BOTH LIFE AND DEATH. IN THE LETTER YOUR CAPTAIN SENT TO GRANDMA, HE PRAISED YOU AS A MAN AND A SOLDIER AND ENDED IT WITH ONE HEARTFELT PHRASE: “… AND HE WAS MY FRIEND.”
UNCLE, SOMEHOW YOU MUST KNOW THAT GRANDMA, THOUGH HER HEART WAS CRUSHED, FOUGHT SO HARD TO BRING YOU BACK FROM FRANCE AND HAVE YOU BURIED IN THAT LITTLE CEMETERY NOT FAR FROM THE FARM. TO THIS DAY, YOUR YOUNGER BROTHERS AND SISTERS HAVE PRESERVED AND CHERISHED YOUR PURPLE HEARTS FROM ANZIO AND FRANCE AND THE SILVER STAR ACCORDED TO YOU BY YOUR COUNTRY. AND YOU REMEMBER UNCLE JOHN. HE’S GONE NOW ALSO. THEY TELL US HE RODE A BATTLE TANK INTO ROME ON LIBERATION DAY AND WAS THE LAST OF ALL OF US TO SEE YOU ALIVE AS YOU WERE RECOVERING IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER ANZIO. AND THEN THERE’S UNCLE HANK — STILL WITH US BUT GROWING OLD AND STILL CARRYING THE SHRAPNEL IN HIS LEGS FROM THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE, STILL GOING REGULARLY TO THE VA HOSPITAL TO EASE HIS PAIN.
AND , THEN THERE IS MY MOM, YOUR CLOSEST SISTER, THE ONE WHO WORKED SIDE BY SIDE WITH YOU IN THE FARM FIELDS AND ON THE OLD TRUCK AS YOU SOLD THE FARM PRODUCE FROM DOOR TO DOOR. MOM HAS CARRIED YOU IN HER HEART FOR EVER SO LONG. SHE NAMED MY BROTHER AFTER YOU SO THAT NONE OF US WOULD EVER FORGET. MOM IS OLD AND GRAY NOW, BUT, WHENEVER SHE SEES A PARADE, WHENEVER THE DRUMS BEGIN TO ROLL AND THAT GRAND OLD FLAG PASSES BY IN REVIEW, SHE STILL TURNS AWAY WITH TEARS IN HER EYES AND ONLY HAS THOUGHTS OF THE BROTHER WHO NEVER WAS ABLE TO MARCH IN A VETERAN’S DAY PARADE.
I’M SURE, UNCLE, THAT YOU WILL RECALL YOUR TIMES AT CHURCH AND THAT OLD LINE FROM THE HOLY WORD: “NO GREATER LOVE HATH A MAN THAN HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR A FRIEND.” GOD BLESS YOU, UNCLE. AND FROM ONE VETERAN TO ANOTHER: “WELL DONE, LIEUTENANT. WELL DONE.”
Thanks again, Greg. I really needed that today. I just spoke to my Mom on the telephone. AND GOD BLESS ALL THE VETERANS OUT THERE. WE ALL OWE SO MUCH TO YOU THAT CAN NEVER BE REPAID IN FULL.
Dave in PWC, you are most welcome.
The VSB site has a great list of links. Considering how many Veterans we have, http://www.infoplease.com/spot/veteranscensus1.html I hope we can get this site more exposure.
I myself got the link from this Nov 2005 article:

Mrs. Wolverine -
Thank you so much for your post.
It touched my heart.
You gave special meaning to Veterans Day.
Happy Veteran’s day to all, especially those who have served our country.
A special “Happy Birthday” to all us jarheads. Since 1775, we have been the world’s most feared fighting force.
SEMPER FIDELIS!
