Ricardo Juarez, the leader of Mexicans Without Borders, has seemed pretty scarce lately. No media, no press releases, no goofy press conferences in months. To go a few months without hearing him spout off seems pretty unusual, and missing my humor fix, I started asking around. I though that maybe he had gotten deported, but I couldn’t imagine that happening without his organization making a huge stink.
I finally heard that he had been making unwanted sexual advances towards female volunteers and was asked to leave. Perhaps there are borders that this organization will defend after all.
As a spokesperson for Mexicans Without Borders, they hardly could have picked a worse public face for the organization, so his departure doesn’t pass without some regret. His English was rudimentary at best and heavily accented, his history as an illegal alien a significant public relations liability, and whenever he appeared on television it only added to the ire that local residents had for the organization. While I’ve little doubt he was very effective with the Hispanic community, he was an utter failure beyond it.
I’ll be fascinated to see how Mexicans Without Borders fills this leadership vacuum.
