Identity Politics Slammed

The online edition of the Manassas News & Messenger allows readers to post comments in response to articles, and often is a source of amusement as a group of area residents will frequently trade charges and insults regarding the subject of a story. The reader commentary frequently demonstrates a need for some degree of adult supervision by the newspaper staff, as the commentary tends to degrade rather quickly, but sometimes that relatively unfiltered forum provides a rather unique insight into the mindset behind some of the political ideologies held by county residents. The reports on the deaths of Jean and James Smith last month were hardly an exception, offering an opportunity for one of the more disturbing examples to be seen in all of its glory.
That commentary doesn’t seem to be available any longer, but judging from a letter to the editor it would seem that once again, identity politics not dissimilar at all from what is now being proffered by Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich as a rationale for his appointment to the United States Senate: that the color of your skin is the determining factor regarding the consequences we face as a result of our behavior, or the benefits we should receive from our government. Since electing a president who is on the record for endorsing such sentiments as “white folks greed runs the world in need”, it is no surprise these appalling sentiments leak into the mainstream, and into the commentary posted on the News & Messenger website.
This ideology is no longer on the fringe, it will in just a few short weeks be ensconced in the Oval Office.
Standing up to that despicable perversion of the dream shared with us by Dr. Martin Luther King stands Joan Pinna, who cannot tolerate the idea that murderers should not be given deferential treatment just because of the color of their skin.
Neither should we.
In the Dec. 27 edition in your Online Reader Reaction, there were six individuals who voiced their thoughts concerning the murders of Jean Smith and her son James. Of that six, there was one who had such an ignorant and stupid viewpoint that I was appalled. This person justified the alleged killer’s heinous crime by stating that African-Americans cannot get jobs because of George Bush making life hard for them, and they must rob because of racist white people. Oh, and you all are struggling because of what you have to endure because of the white folks? Please! Well, white people are without jobs too — or haven’t you noticed — so should they go out and kill blacks because of it?
When I was growing up, my family was very poor. We struggled too, but that did not give any of us the right to steal, rob or murder someone to get what wasn’t ours.
There are many blacks today who are not struggling in a white society. Have you looked at sports, movies, television shows, magazines and wherever else they are shown excelling? Now, we will soon have a black president who is also half white. And, you think we should all gather and harmonize after you made racist remarks? Boy, is that rubbing salt into the wound!
Where is your mentality? It is an insult to the Smith family for you to even suggest that this teenager was a victim because of George Bush or a white society. In today’s “not all white society,” there is no right or wrong, just do whatever makes you feel good. When you make the wrong choice, blame someone else. Race has nothing to do with what choices a person makes and when everyone takes responsibility for their own actions, there will be no need for ignorant and dumb excuses such as yours.

Bravo. Let’s hope there are plenty of Americans out there like Joan willing to stand up for what is right, lest this destructive garbage completely rot away one of the core founding principles of our nation.

A. Your attempt to connect Obama to extreme anti-white thought is absurd. His Mom and Grandparents raised him better than that.
B. I saw that thread and contributed to it. Anyone who reads it from the beginning can see rather obviously that the nonsense was all stirred up by some SINGULAR imbeclie troller who pretended to be black or anti-white or whatever, not even an actual sincere leftist radical.
This is a fine example of how those on the right sometimes promulgate an “echo chamber” effect and when there are no demons around, invent them (or magnify comments of some marginal character) and choose to believe in them so as to continue the holy fight against bogeymen. I hope that you choose to learn from this.
Or maybe you just want to do the whole exercise again, maybe you enjoy it. Here, if so I’ll help you. I’m about to say something clearly not sincere and hateful and you can go ahead and continue the thread castigating everyone who thinks differently than you, and connect it to Obama and bash him. Ready? here goes.

No disrespect to the Smiths but the chickens came home to roost on this one. The boy who shot them is clearly a victim also and deserves a love and care that white society can and will never bestow on him. Hopefully President Obama can and will make a difference in the lives of many such victimized black brothers.

Okay, there you go. It’s not how I feel at all. But I know that if some of you take it as such, it’ll stir up at least dozens of angry posts and I’ll feel alive. Kind of like when people scrawl racist or homophobic or deviant stuff in public toilet stalls. If I wanted to stir up racial animus I’d post this to a public board somewhere and watch the fur fly. To be fair the left does it too but right-wingers do it with more frequency and zeal if you ask me.
It’s a miracle that race relations are as good as they are in this country, when it only takes one miscreant poster to stip up a white group or a black group, for fun and kicks.
I see them more and more, and not just here. White people are tired of bearing the brunt of blame for society’s ills. White people are the least racist of the races. So much so, that other races are flocking to take full advantage of the preferential laws, governments and societies that we have set up around the world. Look around the world and take note of the cultures where slavery is still accepted as the norm.
I don’t see anyone lining up to immigrate to central america, africa, middle east or asia.
Always good to see folks advocating adult supervision of a bolg site and taking a stand against unfiltered commentary that tends to degrade quickly. I’m sure it doesn’t happen anywhere other than at the MN&M site.

Your act is getting pretty sloppy. Obama attended a Church for twenty years that was headed by a racist who never missed a chance to slam the Country.
Obama wrote in his book that he made it a point to reach out to radicals whil e in College. Did his Grandparents raise him to attend a racist Church and to have a such opinions in college?

Obama’s handlers sent him to Chicago to find his “blackness”. And, of course, to find his way into national politics through the most corrupt political machine in the U.S. Wright’s church was supposedly part of that experience. As a Presbyterian, I have never heard racism or hatred preached from our Pastor. What have I been missing? Something about “love thy neighbor”?

I was taking issue with Both parties saying Obama was raised better, yet there is clear evidence they did not do a very good job of it, and maybe that statement should be taken back. Unless of course Both parties thinks that Obama did in fact have those values taught to him at a young age.

Why are you talking about others? Nobody else is. You made a stupid claim about Obama and I correctly pointed it out.
We can see Sam Huntington was right in his book Clash of Civilizations if we will only look and be rational. But too many are not prepared for logic or rational discourse and resort to hurling racist insults. If we are realistic and look at the havoc caused by the millions invading Hispanics on our communities, culture, crime, economy, welfare and standard of living the only conclusion possible is that no Nation can withstand or assimilate Millions of citizens from another culture without changing to the very same type of culture and society the invading millions have created, built and sustained for 100,s of years and are now fleeing in their own Countries!
We really need the infrastructure and construction jobs so we can put the millions of Illegal Aliens back to work, so they can send money home to support Mexico! The contractors can charge the tax payers union scale, hire Illegals at slave wages, pocket the profits, and hit the tax payers for both their wages and the billions in cost to educate their many children, provide medical and welfare.
Sounds like the same old scam, reward the invading horde and soak the tax payers! You would think the Politicians would be content with just outsourcing all the jobs that are possible but No they want to bring in Slave labor ( while ignoring Article IV Section IV of our Constitution against invasion, the rule of Law, and their Oath of office) to take the jobs that cannot be outsourced! To add insult to injury they make the American citizens still working pay billions in extra taxes to educate, provide medical, welfare and jail cells for the invading horde that are taking our jobs and driving down our standard of living! While keeping busy Robbing, Raping and Killing American citizens at an rate that Ben Laden can only dream about!
But the Republicans love the slave labor for their Pay Masters in the Chamber of Commerce and business. The Democrats love the millions of Welfare votes. So there is little or no hope for American citizens and the future viability of this nation as we know it.
The future is an over populated, Spanish speaking third world Nation that is an Cesspool of Corruption, Crime, Poverty and Misery modeled on Mexico!
