Wilmington, N.C. — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says that a man twice held a store clerk up at gunpoint Friday evening in hopes of getting deported to Mexico.

A clerk at the Scotchman #181 store called authorities around 5 p.m., saying that a man had tried to rob the store at 5302 Carolina Beach Road a half-hour earlier, Deputy Charles G. Smith said in a release. The man displayed a gun but left the store on foot without taking money or harming the clerk.

Deputies searched the area but did not find anyone matching the suspect description.

About three hours later, deputies rushed to the store again after getting a hold-up alarm, Smith said. When they arrived, a man was pointing a gun at the clerk.

While deputies and Wilmington police officers positioned themselves around the store, the gunman left the store, still holding the clerk at gunpoint. Smith said that deputies were able to disarm and apprehend the man without incident.

Investigators said they learned that the man refused to take any money from the clerk and wanted to get deported to Mexico.

Deputies identified the alleged gunman as Jose Luis Medina-Ruiz, 37, of Wilmington. They charged him with attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and two counts each of second-degree kidnapping and hoax by false bomb or other device.

Medina-Ruiz remained in the New Hanover County Detention Center under a $135,000 secured bond Saturday afternoon.

Raleigh, N.C. — The driver of an SUV who investigators believe triggered Monday night’s fiery, five-vehicle wreck on Interstate 40 will face criminal charges after he is released from the hospital, Trooper Beckley Vaughan of the Highway Patrol said.

Troopers investigating the wreck say Osmar Guillermo Perez Vicente, 28, caused it when he cut across multiple lanes to try to exit onto Wade Avenue.

Vicente was listed in serious condition at WakeMed Tuesday evening. Vaughan said that after Vicente is released from the hospital, he will face charges of careless and reckless driving and operating without a license.

Vaughan said troopers also intend to investigate whether Vicente is in the United States legally. Vicente does not speak English and told investigators, via a translator, that he has been in the U.S. looking for work for two years.

The wreck closed down I-40 in both directions Monday evening.

Witnesses said Vicente, driving an Isuzu SUV, swerved across lanes, clipping a tractor-trailer, which lost control and rolled into the treeline.

The Isuzu then came back into eastbound lanes and hit a minivan, tossing it into a garbage truck.

The driver of the garbage truck lost control of his vehicle, which crossed the center median and hit a Dodge Charger in the westbound lanes, troopers said. The garbage truck ran off the road and overturned, spilling refuse along the shoulder.

The truck caught fire and set the driver’s clothes ablaze, and flames spread to the debris on the highway and into the adjoining woods.

The driver of the garbage truck, Robert Jay Leffer, 48, from Sanford, was taken to the Jaycees Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday morning with extensive burns.

The other people involved in the wreck had minor injures and were not hospitalized.

The big lie continues that Mexico is a civilized nation that we should embrace with open arms and open borders. The truth is that Mexico is one of the most corrupt nations in our hemisphere and, right now, is very close to a state of total anarchy.

The drug cartels (see map at right), who, for years have controlled many of Mexico’s politicians and more than a few American politicians are now in open warfare with the government for total control of the country.

Most recently, a Mexico police chief’s head, stuffed into an ice box, was delivered to his colleagues in the country’s latest drug-related violence. The incident came as 16 other people were also killed in Mexico’s northern state of Chihuahua in attacks the authorities believe are linked to the country’s drug wars.

“Hitmen cut off commander Martin Castro’s head and left it in an ice cooler in front of the local police station,” said a statement issued by the state justice authorities. Along with the head was a warning from the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel.

The police commander, only five days after starting his job, was abducted along with five other police officers and a civilian, . Six bodies in police uniforms bearing signs of torture and gunshot wounds were found in a street in the state capital, Chihuahua.

Along the northern areas bordering the US, more than 5,300 people were killed last year. Nevertheless, the U.S. State Department has, thus far, refused to issue a warning asking Americans to avoid this very dangerous and often deadly part of the world.

All the more a concern is research that finds the likelihood of an illegal immigrant being incarcerated grows with longer residence in the United States and that the U.S. born children (considered citizens) of illegal immigrants are dramatically more likely to be involved in crime than their illegal immigrant parents. For instance, native born Hispanic male high school dropouts are eleven times more likely to be incarcerated than their foreign born counterparts.
