I agree we should not just be concerned with teenagers who text and drive. As long as we pass out licenses like candy, we will have horrible drivers.

Both Pat and AW are correct in that voting for something because it is for the greater good DID fly the coop ages ago, and more’s the pity. Congressmen and Senators don’t really care about opinions outside their home district or state as those opinions will not get them reelected or defeat them. This is why there is all this pork - everyone wants to go home and tell the folks - “look what I got you, etc.”

The “porker in chief” is Sen. Byrd. When he passes, the people of West Virginia are going to rename to state to ROBERT W. BYRD. He will be the first one to have a state named after him.

As for roads, we will never get out of the hole with roads. Will additional lanes make people use their turn signals more? Will additional lanes stop rubber necking? Will it make slow people move out of the far left lanes? Will it get people paying attention to what is next to them, so they are not pacing the car in the next lane thereby blocking both lanes so that other cars are not able to pass? Until the majority of drivers resume using common sense on the roads, we will never improve the roads.

It’s tough trying to use the turn signal when one is texting.
It’s tough trying to remain alert while driving and using the cell phone.
Our state legislatures think ONLY the teenagers need to be restricted using cell phones and texting while driving and will NOT ban the use of a cell phone while driving for EVERYONE. Therein the problem lies. I have almost been side-swiped a number of time because of an idiot with a cell phone stuck to his/her ear and the other arm waving like he/she was swatting flied creaped into my lane. Every day is a challenge while driving!

Despite your accusations that I am just spouting what the “whack jobs” tell me to (I am quite capable of thinking for myself thank you and don’t just spout what other people say) we actually aren’t that far apart. Govenment does serve a purpose and I have no problem paying taxes for those roads, schools, and quality people in government you mentioned. I also believe that government, especially the federal government is sticking its nose in places it does not belong and is impoverishing our country by sucking us dry financially. Let the feds take care of things like national defense and foreign policy and let the states figure out education, welfare, non-interstate roads etc.

And yes, I bet the two of us could sit down and figure out a reasonable budget given reasonable and limited revenues.

And yes, I totally agree with you about how “normal” people running for office get looked down on and how we need to elect people to office who actually represent the people and not just their political parties and contributors.

Tax cuts don’t work like you think they do. They buy adjustable rate mortgages they can’t afford in 5 years. I’m not advocating giving a UK type of deduction each payday, but there is a “cost of doing business” in the country. The difference between you and me is I am willing to part with an extra $500 a year if it means my kids get better books, we get better roads, etc.

Now, you are going to quote me the mantra of, “Yeah, but they never send that money. They give it to illegal pregnant moms for abortions so their lesbian mates don’t have to adopt them at the marriage ceremony”…blah, blah, blah. Come on, do they really? Give me hard numbers from credible sources that I can check. Prove me wrong. Show me its a large portion of the pie. Know what? You can’t. You are just spouting a line the whack jobs gave you.

It costs money for good things. I want good schools, good roads, efficient government just like you. There is no more money to cut, unless you are willing to boot the mental patients out on the street and continue to pay dog-s%$t for teachers. If you think there is, then you’re just admitting how ineffective Republicans are since they controlled the US House for most of Clinton’s time and half of Bush’s. Republicans control the General Assembly. You telling me they can’t get things done as the majority? You need to think about that! It takes money to pay quality government employees to execute the contracts and write the specifications that are coherent. It takes money for CAREER government employees that will watch home loan trends and jump in and regulate the greed out. Worried Big brother will appear? How’s your house’s market value doing? And with regard to tax cuts, they do work. The economy between 2003 and 2007 was doing just fine until all the people who had no business buying houses found out they couldn’t afford the payments any more, and away we go…….

So why do the anti-tax cutters think politicians (at what ever level) know better how money should be spent than the people who actually earn the money?

Here’s a suggestion: leave it alone. There are signs that things are beginning to stabilize. This bill contains pork that Congress would not have the audacity to try to pass in any other appropriations bill. Take off your dem colored glasses and try to be honest. After all, you and your children willl be paying for all of this too.

The housing bail out plan and bad loan program plan that obama wants could cost up to 9 trillion dollars. That makes the Iraq war look pretty darn cheap.
