How Not To Restore The GOP

By Greg L | 6 May 2009 | National Politics | 48 Comments

Paul Wilson, a political consultant in Alexandria, has written an open letter to RNC Chairman Michael Steele that is an absolute roadmap for the Republican Party.  Not that the letter makes an ounce of sense whatsoever, but taking an entirely contrarian view to this mindless drivel we can absolutely lay out a strong plan for moving forward.  Liberals seem intent on telling the GOP what to do, so it would seem eminently sensible to do precisely the opposite of what they counsel.

The letter quickly starts out on the wrong foot:

President Barack Obama on his 100th Day said in his national press conference “I see the process (of immigration reform) moving this year.” Mr. Chairman time is short. You should be our Party’s most prominent spokesmen to send a message of inclusion to the Hispanic community.

So right off the bat, it is Barry Soetoro-Obama that defines the both the issues and the timing.  Just because Maximum Leader says something (amnesty) should be done, this supposed-Republican deduces that the best course of action is to follow right along.  Yeah, let’s be Democrat-lite.  Last Presidential election we nominated one of the most liberal Senators outside of Arlen Spector as a candidate, someone who would play identity politics right along with the Democrats, and just look how well that worked out.

The debate will be shifting from border security to the profoundly more difficult political question: “what do we do with the 12 million undocumented people who live here?”

Are we a party that supports (metaphorically) dragging illegal Hispanics from their homes and throwing them out of the country? Or does the Republican Party instead reach out to 12 million Hispanics who share many of our Party’s values?

There’s no reason why someone should stop discussing border security, which hasn’t been improved in any meaningful way, unless you happen not to care very much for the national security of the United States.  We still have thousands of unknown foreign nationals pouring across our borders every evening — just a little fewer than before — and they’re still leaving things like candy wrappers with Arabic writing on them, mountains of plastic water bottles, and fields of discarded clothing and diapers among other detritus in the Sonoran desert creating one of the greatest ecological disasters in our history. Let’s invite another 9/11 by ignoring this problem.  Right.

Instead, Wilson trots out that tired canard of “you can’t round up twelve million people.”  He apparently has spent far too much time listening to Democrats chant this nonsense rather than the Republicans — who offer ideas rather than empty soundbites like this — that have demonstrated the value of “attrition through enforcement.”  If you actually bother to enforce the law, lawbreakers are deterred and leave.  States that tried the novel idea of actually enforcing the law such as Oklahoma saw a significant decrease in their illegal alien populations.  Heck, right after illegal aliens in Prince William County started to take law enforcement seriously, a lot of them voluntarily removed themselves, many back to their home countries. Stopping the enforcement of law simply encourages lawbreakers and the eight amnesties enacted since 1986 have resulted in the illegal alien population booming from one to well upwards of twelve million.  Amnesty only exacerbates the problem.

After another bit of blathering about embracing identity politics and tribalism — trying to woo ethnic groups by pandering to narrow racial and ethnic interests rather than promoting ideas, Republican ideas no less, such as freedom, prosperity and the rule of law, we get to the big whopper:

Inclusion can bring new voters to our Party. On the Friday night before Barack Obama was inaugurated, I bumped into Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

I asked him a question that I have pondered for years: “What would it take to get Hispanic voters to come over to the Republican Party?” It’s a question that dates back to a study our company did back in 1992 that was commissioned by the RNC.

The Mayor’s first of several suggestions was “Quit hating us. Quit trying to throw our people out of the country.”

Antonio Villaraigosa?  Villaraigosa served as a national co-chairmen of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 Presidential campaign, and as a member of Obama’s Transition Economic Advisory Board.  He’s the elected Democrat running the city of Los Angeles, and they don’t come much farther left than that.  Who in their right mind would be asking this loon what the Republican Party should do?  Are any Democrats seeking advice from Rush Limbaugh about the future direction of their party?  I’m sure they’d find his answers amusing, but few in their right minds would take them seriously lest they become Republicans.

Of all the folks Wilson decided to reference in his letter to the RNC Chairman, he picks out our socialist U.S. President who is bankrupting future generations with massive public debt and a person who comes in a close second to former Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevich in demonstrating Democratic Party ethics.  A philandering member of MEchA who came under 31 counts of campaign finance and disclosure violations just weeks after he forced all city employees to sign an “ethics pledge” is a far cry from the usual mis-interpretation of Ronald Reagan quotes we are usually subjected to.

What utter, unmitigated garbage.

The Republican Party has wrongly dabbled with the idea of trying to become more like Democrats, and it’s clear that dumb experiment was a terribly foolish mistake. What has worked — the only approach that has worked — has been to not apologize for principle but embrace it, fearlessly promote it, and make it clear to voters why these principle-based policies are worthy of their support.  Republicans have been in trouble not because they’ve made a strong case for principle, but because many have too often abandoned it and rightfully been labelled as hypocrites.

A lot of Republican leaders have learned this painful lesson.  Some, thankfully, have never needed to learn it.  It’s time for the former to accept that it is time for the latter to take charge of the party and not kick out anyone who hasn’t gotten it, but use that passion and conviction to help them understand why adherence to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness remains just as true today as it ever was.

“Liberals seem intent on telling the GOP what to do, so it would seem eminently sensible to do precisely the opposite of what they counsel.”

It would make sense that Republicans wouldn’t vote for liberals that have the same ideas of Democrats even if they run on a Republican ticket. But they do, in droves.

Need some examples? Supervisor Martin Nohe, Supervisor Maureen Caddigan, Sheriff Glendell Hill, you could change the “R” after their name to a “D” and no one would know the difference because they are in lockstep with the liberal Democrats now.

Next election Greg will be endorsing them.

He has this wrong. I worked for the Republican congressional candidate in the nations most hispanic district in 1992 and the RNC was nowhere to be found.

We got eight to ten percent above the Bush presidential vote for our congressional candidate. And we ran a so so campaign.

Hispanics are some of the most anti illegal alien champions in Los Angeles. The illegals come into their neighborhoods and destroy them. The illegals get on welfare and hang out all day while hispanic american citizens work twelve hour days paying taxes while their next door neighbors party all the time right in their face.

Hispanics are very conservative and strive for the American dream. They are small business owners who like limited government. They are very catholic and support conservative social issues.

Do you really think your oppenent, a democrat mayor is going to give good advice to republicans? Give me a break.

I guess we have several Anonymous’s ? Where one would get that Greg or for that matter many others,do not support Nohe. He ran on the ticket and apparently lied. He’s now trying for a higher position but he will not make it.

Caddigan has played the field well enough to get things done for her District. She has tried to be a Repb. and conservative. For the most part she has done very well. If Woodbridge would have had a Maureen Caddigan, we would be so much better off than we are today.

To think that Triangle is starting to look like a nice little town and Caddigan is using all it’s potential. Is is far more that Woodbridge had for 20 yers w/Barg and now Principi is the same as Barg. He’s looking out for his move up.
By now he would have done alot more for Woodbridge and it just hasn’t happened.

But be a Democrat spouting this as Glen Hill is the Best Sheriff that we have had in along time. The one before him used everyone and all tricks to get what he wanted.
He lied about putting in for more Deputies from the State but asked P.W. to put up more.
I know because I checked this out with State and he was not putting in for State Deputes. At the time I had a large folder on Stoffregen, all from State.

So don’t compare Hill to him. Hill is an HONEST

    Typical Democrat!

He had to add more employees, as he had to let go of the blood suckers that was with the other sheriff. So he had to hire more Deputies. At least he doesn’t have the Program of Selling the Badges. What a mess and fraud.

Hill is responsible, honest and has good leadership abilities. He works for his money and does a good job.

Not sure who you are talking to, but it is all wrong.Typical Democrat stupid stories.

What I know, if you believe what you wrote, you don’t know anything about the sheriff’s office or Glendell Hill. Or you hate Glendell Hill’s record and don’t want the people to know about it.

The old sheriff is never coming back so don’t be so afraid of him. And get to know the true record of the people you support.

Glendell incresed employee staff from 74 (2004 when he took office) to 89
Glendell increased the operation budget from 5.3 million to over 8 million.
His record does not reflect leadership.

Sheriff Glendell Hill (R) (2004 – ) Reduced his workload by cutting services to the people, collected some cell phones, collected some money for the Red Cross to buy a trailer, started project lifesaver, bought tasers to shock upset people in the courtroom, bought a golf cart so deputies could ride around the court complex, has a budget over 8 million dollars.

Sheriff E. Lee Stoffregen, III (D) (1996 – 2003) Achieved Virginia Law Enforcement Accreditation, started child mentoring, established senior citizen programs, had deputies respond to major crimes to get a quicker response to these crimes, tried to make the streets safe by running radar to slow down speeders and aggressive drivers, and never had a budget close to 6 million dollars.

Sheriff Wilson C. Garrison, Jr. (D) (1984 – 1995) Modernized the sheriff’s office, started a fugitive squad, started the child I.D. program, computerized the sheriff’s office, started escorting funerals, started a rank structure, updated equipment, gave free gun locks for gun safety, and never had a budget close to 6 million dollars.

Again, the only way I see out of our current mess (economic, social, political… to mention a few) is the destruction of BOTH political parties. Parties are nothing more than “an enabler for a group to gain power” and gang up on “we the people”.

Case in point, Congressman Wolf voted for Bush’s bailout, but against Obama’s bailouts. His votes do not correlate with liberalism or conservatism. They only correlate with the Republican Party. Don’t get me wrong here. I have infinite respect for Congressman Wolf. He is one of the good guys. But he is voting along party lines. He represents the Republican Party. I want him to represent ME (i.e. his constituents).

We need more independent reps in our government. They have no responsibility to a party. They have a responsibility to their constituents.

Anyone who does not see the value of this should re-read Greg’s article here. You will notice that BOTH parties are pushing for amnesty. We lose either way.

There are some people who tried to get him out but the opponent just didn’t have it.

As far as law enforcement going up,it needs to,as we are way behind many other areas and we have many problems.

Glen Hill goes about doing many things quietly. The other one made sure he shouted from the highest hill, but he accomplished nothing.

The other one probably is not coming back as he’s making money in Real Estate. But he can sure fish out a buddy to run and then tell them what to do.
Fotis was aturn coat and a Stoffregen man.People saw him for what he is.

Really good points from Karla H.

I actually think that the two party system is a good system, that has served us well through time. I don’t think that the ascendancy of another party, or two, would really solve anything structurally. The problem is that we the people have collectively become too attached to one party or the other. Our representatives don’t have to actually worry about what’s real or any long-term effects to what they’re doing. They need only play identity politics and convince their base that they are all that’s between us and increased wage disparity (vs. more oppressive taxes), continued abortion which God supposedly frowns on (vs. an outlawing of abortion and forced baby mills), a government roundup of guns (vs. a paramilitary takeover and waterbording of all dissidents), etc. etc. It’s all fantasy land stuff and the mundane things like “who’s keeping Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in line” gets swept under the rug.

The problem in America to me isn’t the perpetually undecided swing voters. It’s the entrenched voters on each aside who swallow anything their party chooses to dish out, then hold their nose and pull the lever the same way every 2-4 years. And unfortunately, that’s most of us. 70%+.

It’d be a stronger America if we could, most of us, stop any allegiance to either of these corrupt parties and make them compete on real issues, not fantasy-land BS.

That said I think that a “throw the bums out” movement, a movement to unseat incumbents of both parties, is long overdue. This is a lazy and sordid crop of representatives.

How can anyone take this stuff seriously? How can anyone believe at this late date that these elections are about war on terror, reducing or outlawing abortion, reducing poverty, or any of the other “marketing points” they sell their snake-oil to us with? If anyone does take the rhetoric of these paid wh**es seriously, reflect on (the esteemed) Arlen Spector telling the press reflexively just the other day that he hopes Norm Coleman wins - that he hopes the courts “do the right thing” - then apologizing later to Harry Reid, saying “I forgot which side I was on”. These are not serious people. They don’t know “the right thing” from a hole in the ground.

Right on target. People have been conditioned to think that voting outside of the two party system is somehow wasting their vote.

The public should not wait for politicians to legislate term limits, they see that as a career killer and that will never happen. The term limit is in the hands of the voter. Always has been.

Candidates outside of the current one-two punch system will grow their coffers as more citizens vote for them. Thereby showing the masses it is not a waste to vote for who they believe to be the better candidate, and to quit selecting based on the lesser of two evils.

Johnson and BothParties raise some excellent points, both for and against Independents. I admit that Independents are often nothing more than spoilers (e.g. Ross Perot). But with the illegal alien issue in particular, I now “have no party”. Both Republicans and Democrats are deficit spenders, who would allow any foreigner to trample our soil. And even the most bleeding heart libs (e.g. Auntie Lanna and Auntie Lanna) must realize that we would instantly become a 3rd world nation with open borders. I’d love to help everyone. I’d love to have “world peace”. But I can’t afford it.

But BothParties, it is (the esteemed) Arlen Spector that I am currently most disappointed in. Had he become an Indie I would have actually developed some respect for him. His message would have been, “The Republican Party stinks. I’m leaving. I will vote for my constituents.” But by becoming a Benedict Arnold he is saying, “I need a new John to support my habit.” You are correct. He is nothing more than a hooker.

The following is a recent press release from National Council of La Raza…notice how they never say “American Communities”. Isn’t the budge supposed to be for “everyone” regardless of ethnicity? YOU DECIDE!

    Contact:
    Marie Watteau
    (202) 785-1670

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    May 8, 2009

“NCLR CONCERNED THAT THE PRESIDENT’S BUDGET DOES NOT ADEQUATELY INVEST IN THE LATINO COMMUNITY

Washington, DC-NCLR (National Council of La Raza), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, expressed deep concern over the President’s fiscal year (FY) 2010 budget released by the White House yesterday.

“What we have seen so far with the budget is discouraging and suggests that some of the key priorities of the Latino community are not those of the administration. I am very surprised that the Obama administration in its first budget would mirror similar cuts made by the Bush administration,” said Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO.

For example, the budget overwhelmingly maintains funding for Latino health-serving programs at the same levels as in the past administration. And even though the nation’s unemployment rate has reached 11.4% for Latinos, many employment programs are also level-funded.

However, the FY 2010 budget does address some of the issues that concern many Latino families, such as worker protections, the housing crisis, health care reform, and immigrant integration. For example, it allocates $10 million toward the establishment of new immigrant integration programs geared toward citizenship, training, and coordination of federal resources for immigrant integration.

“We are encouraged by the U.S. Department of Labor’s renewed commitment to protecting workers’ rights by funding boosts for enforcement of laws related to wage and hour, occupational health and safety, and equal opportunity, but we are concerned with the level funding for workforce investment systems,” said Murguía.

Furthermore, the budget includes a significant increase for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Housing Counseling Assistance Program, with a funding increase of more than 50%. The President’s budget provides $37 million in new funding to combat mortgage fraud, predatory lending, and stepped-up enforcement of home purchase settlement requirements.

“The recent housing crisis has hit Latino families particularly hard, and the budget addresses some of the concerns that NCLR and other low-income community advocates have voiced over specific issues such as mortgage fraud and lack of financial services and housing counseling resources,” added Murguía.

Although education has been identified as a significant policy initiative for this administration, the President’s budget does not reflect investment in vital programs for Latino students.

“NCLR is deeply disappointed in the lack of investment in parents, family literacy, and English language learners. We are especially troubled that the Even Start program was eliminated-as it was in the Bush budgets-even though its fate was based on a flawed study,” added Murguía. “It is unfortunate that the administration is unwilling or unable to provide a deeper analysis of the impact of this program on Latino families-who make up roughly half of all Even Start participants.”

“We realize this is just a proposal and that Congress has the opportunity to deliver a budget that works for all Americans, and we will continue to work with the administration and Congress to achieve that,” concluded Murguía.”"

    For the Patriot -

Do you think that a NO AMNESTY bumper sticker might illicit a similar response in Montgomery Co. Md. and other “closely related” communities around our Free Speech nation?

Maybe La Raza and related organizations could help law enforcement by assisting them with apprehending all those whose actions and speech could be deemed anti-illegal immigrant.

What I find most interesting is that groups like NCLR, Mecha, etc. with clear published agendas are not under the microscope.

That statement begs the question: What are you going to do about it?

AWCheney, I just knew that sooner or later you would be putting in your
2 cents! Now, didn’t you give me the what-for??? I certainly don’t need
to have my credibility negated by you since there are lots of readers who
totally agree with me, regardless of your unsolicited diagnosis of my mental
condition. Takes one to know one?

I have already resolved to begin voting against all incumbents, regardless of party. The message needs to be sent. I am tired of their shenanigans!

I’m a bit more moderate. I vote against all incumbents as soon as they betray our nation on issues related to Amnesty or promoting illegal immigration.

Fran Kendrick: that a number of readers around here might agree with you says nothing about the validity of your views. It just says that a lot of people, particularly those who don’t like to think hard or dig deeply, often prefer to hang out with people who think exactly as they do. I wouldn’t take it as in any way reflecting on the merits of your views.

To go back to a point you made several comments up the thread - I don’t think there will be a very good time in the coming 20 years to stop bashing Stoffregen. That was a toxic situation if I ever saw one, with a duplicate, off-book, police force actively trying to aggrandize itself at taxpayor expense, rampant cronyism linked to political back-scratching going on in the deputy business, all kinds of needless and goofy toy and gizmo purchases, lack of professionalism in the few duties that legitimately belonged in the Sheriff’s bailiwick, and a Sheriff who openly challenged the BOCS Chairman who took him to task. Of course it ended up badly for PWC’s Boss Hawg and the voters resoundingly sided with the Chairman and the Republican candidate to replace Stoffregen. But it shouldn’t be forgotten how out of hand that situation was, and how important to good governance that it was to clean it up thorougly. The county was lucky to have good leadership that didn’t get wobbly in the face of Stoffregen’s threats. So I say, keep up the bashing for at least another 20 years, so people don’t forget.

Just so not to miss the chance of agreeing a little bit with Johnson (I have agreed with him once before) and Both Parties (not sure I’ve ever agreed in that quarter), I give serious consideration every cycle to voting against every incumbent, particularly in the Virginia General Assembly. I wish they all ran at large so I could vote against more of them.

NoVa Scout, You wrote a lot of words without saying a thing.

The Chairman of Prince William (Connaughton)and the Police Chief (King Deane) teamed up to get rid of a powerful Democrat (Stoffregen) and started a bunch of propaganda. We need to get a real Republican in the sheriff’s office, not just a liberal Democrat looking for a paycheck like Glendell Hill.

That’s why I like law and order Republicans like Connaughton, anon. The cop’s son took a tough stand in favor of the Police and the citizens, went full tilt against a Sheriff who was trying to build an empire with public funds, and found a Republican candidate who put the lie to ignorant sterotypes of the GOP in the South. There was political risk in what he did, but he did it and was rewarded at the ballot box. Stoffregen tried to orchestrate a primary challenge and a general election challenge to Connaughton in order to protect his perks. Stoffregen ended up with ashes in his mouth. The voters see through this stuff.

NoVA Scout, the sad thing is we ousted a conservative democrat who worked and kept cost low and elected a liberal democrat who reduced the work but increased the cost over 50%.

If you know the whole story Connaughton and King Deane just made up a bunch of crap and feed it to the media because they knew the citizens of Prince William wouldn’t know any different (they lied to them) and people to this day believe most of the propaganda they put out there.

The second problem I have with the way they ousted Stoffregen is I believe a police chief should “never” lie to the people and King Deane told things he knew were untrue.

But this is Prince William County, if you aren’t in with the good ol’ boys, your out.

Anonymous, they ousted a conservative Democrat (Stoffregen) and
replaced him with a liberal democrat (Hill) who claims to be a Republican.
Actually, he is a RINO. Why else would he have DEMANDED his deputies
vote for Obama? Uh, I forgot….Hill is black, but so is Obama! We are
seeing the very same thing right now, with this administration, aren’t we?
It seems that Obama can do no wrong, even his drug use, anti-American
views, his associations with known terrorists (Ayers, etc.), not to mention
the birth certificate scandal (which has cost him 800,000. in lawyer fees
to keep all his records under lock and key)….all this, and why???? He’s
black and Americans are still hunkering under the guilt for past transgressions.
Wait and watch. His replacement for Souter on the Supreme Court will
no doubt be black. Maybe even Al Sharpton?
