Terrorists? They Can’t Be Much Worse Than Illegals, Right?

By Greg L | 10 May 2009 | National Politics, Prince William County | 17 Comments

How’s this for starry-eyed liberal insanity?

It is true that some detainees might be released into the American population, but these are people who are no longer considered “enemy combatants.” We must presume that means they are not a danger, since “enemy combatants” are held indefinitely because of the threat they pose. Detainees who are actually terrorists and were kept at Guantanamo justifiably should not be set free. They should be held, tried, sentenced and, perhaps, after a very long time, sent back from whence they came.

First we get Jim Moran saying it would be a good idea to move enemy combatants to Northern Virginia.  Then we get the editorial board of the News & Messenger not only endorsing that stupid idea, but following the inevitable series of events that would unfold saying that when we don’t want to detain them any longer and their home country won’t take them back (not an unusual occurrence, by the way), that we should be just peachy with the idea of releasing foreign enemy combatants onto Northern Virginia streets.

Detaining enemy combatants operating outside of the Geneva Convention is pretty darned light treatment.  Under international law, executing them on the spot is entirely permitted.  Now that we decided to house them and keep them safe from the fate that would have almost certainly awaited them, we now have some sort of a “stain on our moral purity” that can only be removed by letting these people loose in our own communities.  That kind of utter liberal-psychosis-driven stupidity is an invitation for plenty of future 9/11’s, and darned if the liberals aren’t trying just as hard as they can to make it happen as soon as possible.

Yeah, these are the folks that are considered the “mainstream” source for local news.   I think calling them the Urinal-Massager when they operated under their former name, despite some of the criticism I received at the time, has now proven to be entirely warranted.

UPDATE: Riley piles on:

Quantico is an open base meaning that anyone can go on it. You just have to pass through a checkpoint. The Town of Quantico is located within the boundaries of the base. The town is home to a train station where AMTRAK and the VRE commuter rail service stops. Not only do you have to worry about the risk of escape (unlike the waters of the Gulf of Mexico surrounding Gitmo in Cuba, the Potomac is not filled with sharks and Gitmo does not offer regularly scheduled train service), but we should be concerned about people trying to get in. Terrorists could either undertake a rescue mission as U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf has warned or simply opt to inflict casualties there with it being a high profile target in order to garner attention. Harkening back to 2001, we’re dealing with the same group that attacked the Pentagon. Does anyone really think that Quantico would be more of a deterrent?

Arlington County and Fairfax County are very welcoming for illegals and terrorists.

Orrin Street in Vienna, Virginia is a particularly good place.

You’ve got that right, annon. However, Houston’s police union seems to have reached the “enough is enough” threshold after the shooting of two officers by illegal immigrants. The union idemands an end to the 17-year policy of avoiding questions about a suspect’s immigration status.

God, you gotta love “real” journalism.
Do the Editors even spell-check in their haste to publish, or are they really this %^(*& stupid?

The newspapers wonder why they’re dying. Could it be that they leaned too far left? The same reason that Air America failed. Leftist attitudes don’t produce income.

I agree Johnson, but those views sure do produce voters as we’ve recently seen. :(

well, what are we supposed to do with them (enemy combatants)? I do not want them released on American soil, but why the hell did we remove them from Iraq and Afghanistan, ship them around the world, and hold them in OUR prison - why didn’t we hold them in a prison in those other countries? That is where the mistake was made! Didn’t anyone think this through, and think hey - what will we do with these people in OUR prison. It could be argued that they are already on American soil, as they are being held on a military base (at least, most of them).

Perhaps the News & Messenger views them as potential new subscribers…

Looks like this is the talking point of MoveOn.org now. Turn PW Blue over on the anti- site said something very similar to what was in the N&M article, claiming that terrorists are less dangerous than domestic criminals.

If you’re confused enough to think that soldiers “apprehend” enemy combatants on the battlefield and levy “charges” against them, I can understand why this seems so foreign. In actuality, soldiers either kill enemy combatants or take them prisoner, and there are no “charges” or legal process to that activity although the treatment of prisoners is governed by the Geneva Convention and a couple other international agreements to which the United States subscribes.

The Geneva Convention only applies to “lawful” combatants, which are generally defined as those who wear recognizable uniforms, operate as a military combat force, and have a chain of command, among a few other attributes. Anyone falling outside of these attributes, such as spies, have no legal protections whatsoever under international law, and their treatment is governed exclusively by Department of Defense policy and the “Rules of Engagement” dictated to U.S. military personnel.

Those policies generally would permit summary courts-martial to order that an unlawful combatant be summarily executed in the field after any useful intelligence information was humanely obtained from them. The legal authority to do so remains, so in cases where we have an unlawful combatant who cannot be repatriated to their home country for whatever reason, execution by firing squad is a lawful and likely far more preferable option than to release them at the corner of Grant and Church streets with one hundred dollars of the taxpayer’s money and advised to keep out of trouble lest we become upset with them.

How many of these potential releasees are going to be taken in and cared for by Jim Moran? I hope it’s more than just one.

Did I miss something? I haven’t found any place where the government is proposing to release known terrorists into the general population. What’s all this about them wandering the streets of Northern Virginia? I know there were some special cases (like the Uighurs (sp?)) where there was some talk of bringing limited numbers into ethnic communities here when there was no evidence of specific criminal acts (because returning them to China would result in persecution), but I thought the only issue here was whether detainees are incarcerated in the US. Is this just another one of those reading comprehension problems that pops up here with disturbing frequency?

Your attention is directed to paragraph 8 of subject article. If found not guilty or released on a technicality (as has been done) you can expect them to remain in this country as no other country wants them. Of course, we could send them back to their own countries but that is not pc as they might have an “accident” or two. Electricity and water don’t mix.

I do not see any problem with bringing them to N.Va., DC, and suburban Md. if NoVA Scout and the Open Borders crowd of the anti site take them into their homes with love and open arms.
