The release of the most recent U.S. Census Department figures have a lot of folks talking about the relative proportion of persons of Hispanic descent in the Commonwealth, but so far no one has bothered to look at these figures in order to estimate the number of persons of Hispanic descent who are illegal aliens. Few probably would so wantonly cast aside political correctness and even investigate this question, but we here certainly would.
The most recent census figures peg the Hispanic population at 6.6%, which would place it at 512,759 given a total population in Virginia of 7,769,089. The Commonwealth Institute estimates that the illegal alien population in Virginia is about 300,000. Not every illegal alien is Hispanic, they really do come from all over the globe. But it does pose an interesting question that additional data would help to answer: just what proportion of our Hispanic population are illegal aliens?
At least in Virginia, the vast majority of illegal aliens deported have been Hispanic, making the potential for a close correlation that suggests that perhaps more than half of the Hispanic population of Virginia are illegal aliens rather substantial.
