Jay O’Brien’s Tea Party Opening

By Greg L | 7 July 2009 | National Politics, Prince William County | 9 Comments

Former State Senator Jay O’Brien emceed the Prince William County Independence Day Tea Party and did a truly wonderful job, leaving a lot of participants rather eager to see Jay return to public service as an elected official.  Mirroring the text of the Declaration of Independence, Jay enumerates many of the the outrages of Congress and the current Administration in a powerful appeal for American citizens to stand up to the tyranny we’ve been seeing and take our country back.  Our country cannot long sustain the irresponsible behavior of our federal elected officials, and it’s up to us to do something about this.

Fiscal incompetence, yes. Tyranny, not so much. When living in a representative democracy, it’s not cool to debase the political coinage. Makes it impossible to effect political change. Words lose meaning.

NoVA, please clarify what you ment by “it’s not cool to debase the political coinage.”

Also, with regards to tyranny and the current climate would this not apply:

“The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” James Madison, Federalist essay #47.

Good to see a Virginia politician addressing real issues (even if he is a former Virginia politician). It seems that Sen Creigh “Daffy Duck(er)” Deeds has no intention of doing the same -

    “Standing up to tyranny”?

The real tea party participants were standing up to a foreign power.

These local rednecks had a vote- and lost. . .thus they compare themselves to ‘victims’ of a foreign despot instead of legitimate voters who simply did not like the outcome.

Virginny- I know it’s tough to live in a blue state. . .but stop making the intellectual and historical mistake of comparing yourselves to those without votes or voices in your local gov’t.

And tea bags are gay references- you’re inspiring giggles among the educated as well as groans from those who have some sense of history.

He’d still be a State Senator and one of our party’s most thoughtful conservative leaders in the General Assembly had it not been for a bunch of people who failed to listen to ANYONE over the danger of nominating a seriously flawed candidate for Delegate within O’Brien’s Senate district.

I’m not trying to rehash the entire Faisal Gill fiasco other than to say, the GOP at all levels needs to learn from it’s mistakes in these inner-party squabbles if we are to regain strength and prominence at all levels.

I have to say alot of the action taken in 2009 has been very encouraging. It’s not enough to just pick someone and label them “the REAL conservative” in the race. We have learned that we need to recruit conservatives with great talent and ideas so we always have “the RIGHT conservative” in the race.

Jay. You certainly can’t count yourself among the educated who have any sense of history while making comments like:

“The real tea party participants were standing up to a foreign power.”

Foreign? The population of the BRITISH colonies was largley BRITISH in origin and governed by the BRITISH.

Ever hear of The Right of Englishmen? How about as it related to the colonists, the revolution and our independence?

Get a little clue by reading “Address to the British People” by John Jay

“Be not surprised, therefore, that we, who are descended from the same common ancestors, that we, whose forefathers participated in all the rights, the liberties, and the constitution you so justly boast of, and who have carefully conveyed the same fair inheritance to us, guaranteed by the plighted faith of government and the most solemn compacts with British sovereigns, should refuse to surrender them to men who found their claims on no principles of reason, and who prosecute them with a design that, by having our lives and property in their power, they may with the greater facility enslave you.”

The closest thing this nation has ever had to a foreign despot currently resides in the White House.

Not sure how you measure that interval, Bridget, but, if it is true, the closest thing isn’t very close. A majority of the citizens elected the guy. I wasn’t one of them, but I don’t regard him as more despotic than Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter. He’s just some liberal that I didn’t vote for and a lot of other people did.

Could “our leader” have an NPD? ‘The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) describes narcissism as a personality disorder that “revolve around a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and sense of entitlement. Often individuals feel overly important and will exaggerate achievements and will accept, and often demand, praise and admiration despite worthy achievements.” ‘ I have heard a theory that he is working out his childhood problems, having come from a very dysfunctional family situation.

    Jay,

A blue state? How stupid do you feel for voting for obama now? At least the educated did not fall for that idiot.

Though, I don’t envy the position you are in. You either voted for the guy because you knew he would destroy the Country, or you have to admit you fell for all of his BS. Either way, you have to admit you screwed up your vote last fall.
