So Who Wrote That Right-Wing Extremism Report?

By Greg L | 25 July 2009 | National Politics | 40 Comments

When the Department of Homeland Security published that wonderful report entitled “Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” about how returning veterans are potential terrorists, and that anyone who thinks that Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution of the United States is actually meaningful are “extremists”, a few folks out there wondered just how DHS could come to such outrageous conclusions.  One blogger out there decided it was worth submitting a FOIA request to learn the basis by which the Obama Administration made these determinations, and the answers aren’t terribly surprising, although they’re pretty outrageous in themselves.

Here’s part of the exchange between DHS and this blogger:

1. With respect to “(U//FOUO) DHS?I&A notes that prominent civil rights organizations have observed an increase in anti-Hispanic crimes over the past five years,” found on page 5 of 9 of the document, you requested the following:

** Names of the cited “prominent civil rights organizations,” as well as any references used to create the document or this citation within the document…

A search within the Office of Intelligence and Analysis (OI&A) for records that would be responsive to your request produced a total of 127 pages, all of which are publicly avaliable. Pursuant to 5 U.S.C. ss552(a)(1) and (a)(2), DHS need not make available under the FOIA records that are published elsewhere. As the responsive documents are publicly available and you specifically requested “website links,” we have not enclosed hard copies with this response.

With respect to Item 1, the following website links are provided:

Now isn’t that just peachy.  The SPLC is setting policy to the Obama Administration.  This is the same crackpot shakedown operation that preys on rich, paranoid old liberals, and was condemned by the Northern Virginia Journal, saying

“If you don’t particularly want your charitable donations to go towards somebody’s mortgage or country club dues, give your hard-earned dollars to a real charity, not a bunch of slick, parasitic hucksters who live high on the hog by raising money on behalf of needy people who never see a dime of it.”

The Better Business Bureau slammed these folks for spending 89% of their income on administration and fundraising, and their reporting is so consistently littered with false information that they’ve even tried to publish a report first, and afterwards call to get the facts.   This racial huckstering version of ACORN is nothing more that a grievance-mongering fundraising operation, and now the Obama administration is taking policy direction from them, albeit at a terrible political price.

This is hardly surprising, but as it is increasingly becoming clear, Obama is handing the levers of federal power to leftist extremists bent on remaking America into something the founding fathers would seriously disapprove of.  This isn’t the change so many voted for, unless those voters were mistaking Barack Obama for Daniel Ortega.  At this point, I can understand such confusion, unfortunately.

So, let’s see if I’ve got this straight… The DHS used reports by the SPLC, who then turned around to point out that the DHS reports based on those SPLC reports backup the SPLC.

Not only did the Obama DHS utilize SPLC spew to formulate policy … but the SPLC used the DHS alert to bolster their credibility. Crafty bastards.

The Church of Morris Dees indeed …pass the plate:

    Dear Friend,

As you may recall, we’ve recently documented 926 hate groups operating in the U.S. These organizations are being fueled by immigration fears, the faltering economy and the racist backlash to the election of President Obama.

Now, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has just issued a new alert warning of the dangers posed by these hate groups. It says that “white supremacist lone wolves” and “small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology” are currently the most significant domestic terrorism threat.

With your help, we’re fighting these groups every day by tracking and exposing their activities. We’re also training law enforcement officers and making sure they have the latest and best intelligence on these dangerous extremists.

And we’ve warned the Pentagon about extremists who have infiltrated the armed services. No one, of course, can forget the deadly toll of the Oklahoma City bombing by Gulf War veteran Timothy McVeigh.

Please help us continue our critical work and counter this mounting threat by sending a special gift today. We’ll keep you posted on further developments. And remember to stand strong against hate whenever and wherever you see it.

Although this collection is not intended to be comprehensive, it provides insight into the attitudes, motivations and personalities of a still-growing fringe movement that regrettably wields more influence in our society now than ever.”

Makes my heart soar to know that nativist influence is increasing. Keep up the great work, Greg.

Can someone remind me why it’s bad to be a nativist? I love my country. I have placed her needs above mine through service in the Marines and the federal government. Being a nativist, to me, means that I think that my country is the best on earth and the her needs outweigh all others’. DHS has taken the former border inspection agencies in a political direction and that is wrong. Too many agencies, too many missions to manage effectively.

It certainly warms the heart to see all these proud nativists considering what the term means.

I would note that Webster’s (and other dictionaries) information on the origins of the term date from that proud year of 1844, when among other great nativist acts, a Catholic church was torched in Philadelphia by nativists.

See http://www.ushistory.org/tour/tour_staug.htm among many other sources. Nativism in the 19th and 20th centuries has many such acts, many sterling pronouncements too about non-natives, ie. immigrants. As the dictionary confirms, the word nativism has nothing to do with opposing just illegal aliens. The term refers to an anti-immigrant bias in general, and often a quite violent one. Catholics were among the chief targets of American nativists for much of nativist history. 100% legal immigrants have been the target of nativists for most of nativist history.

The SPLC and the ADL have been defaming and slandering legitimate, and law-abiding groups for decades. These two groups rely on race-baiting and fanning the flames of hatred to line their own pockets.

There should be a class action suit against the ADL and SPLC, as well as a Congressional investigation into their activities.

It is rank incompetence for DOJ and other agencies to be basing any projected course of action based on input provided from the ADL or the SPLC.

By the way, this has been going on long before Obama arrived. Take a look at DOJ position papers from the Clinton and Bush eras. Same thing.

A few years ago, lacking any credible evidence of new Klan activities, the SPLC decided to pad their enemies list by putting out a website with a bunch of little Confederate Battle Flags on a US map. The “Neo-Confederate” groups “discovered” by the SPLC and deemed to be so threatening, were the Sons of Confederate Veterans and United Daughters of the Confederacy chapters that have been mainstay local community groups in towns all across the USA since the end of the War for Southern Independence. Just what the SPLC found so threatening about all of those pancake breakfasts and cemetery clean-up projects, they never quite explained.

Nevertheless, DOJ and the Media both reported that there was a sudden surge in… “Neo-Confedrate” groups. Of course, their alarmist remarks were all based on the SPLC fantasy displayed on the SPLC website.

As for the ADL, being a member of the Jewish community, I am ashamed of how far down that group has gone. Instead of sticking-up for folks in their own community, they apparently have joined the practice of the SPLC and begun creating lists of perceived enemies.

The ADL, and their more radical cousins, the JDL, were never elected as advocates for Jewish America, nor has the SPLC been given any mandate for the slander that it does on a regular basis.

Our federal agencies prove only their incompetence by allowing themselves to be duped by these and similar groups.

A class action lawsuit and a federal probe into the ADL and SPLC is the right course to take.

    Right you are, Anon.

Nativist or nativism are only used in a pejorative sense - tag word weapons currently used to shut down arguments that can’t be won.

Denationalized elites go on the assumption that it is wrong to defend one’s culture, language, heritage, mores and identity and to be in any way against foreign influx and influences.

But they would be loath to go overseas and suggest to an Egyptian, Saudi, Thai, Filipino, Honduran, Brazilian, Iranian, Japanese, Vietnamese et al. to fling open their borders to “come what may”. Good luck lecturing any nation that they have a duty to favor, celebrate and subsidize the interests of immigrants over those of established inhabitants.

Nativism - The reestablishment or perpetuation of native cultural traits, especially in opposition to acculturation -

Think I’ll have a t-shirt made up that says:

fund raising events for the anointed one. We’re going to see a lot of reparations
which will be done discreetly by placing a great number of unqualified blacks in
high positions in his administration. This, in itself, is a form of reparations, if you

Fair enough Bridget, then exactly how do you feel about the Catholic church burnings, lynchings, and other activities of nativist history? I’m speaking of people who self-identified as nativists. Do you think that was an appropriate response to the legal immigration of the 19th and early 20th centuries? They would have certainly argued, as you do, that they were trying to repel foreign influences. All those Irish and Italian Catholics, all those Eastern European Jews, all tarnishing America.

The word has a meaning and a history. It was a proud label of people who did the above. Why not just oppose illegal aliens, if you wish, without aligning yourself with that history?

What should they care, if America turns into a cesspool? Their money is going back to their country of origin- once the wealth runs dry here, they’ll go back and reap the rewards they sent home, illegally gained simply because their entry into this country was illegal.

About a year ago (I think it was covered here and a couple bubble blogs) analysts told us, the illegals were leaving some southern states because jobs were not available and the economy wasn’t rebounding fast enough. Once we’re mired deep, they’ll leave in droves.

    No loyalty to this country.

    Here are some statistics:

    * Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.
    * When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.
    * Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate.
    * The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is black and Hispanic.

    Interracial Crime
    * Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.
    * Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are black.
    * Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.
    * Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.

    * Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white.
    * Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely.

    * Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139 to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million.
    * Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are three times more likely.

So it looks like the incarceration rates are pretty close to reality (7 times more crime, 7 times the number of blacks in prison than whites - exactly the same ratio for Hispanics)

I am the descendent of not just Irish Catholics, but also German, French, English and Scottish Catholics who arrived on these shores long before the Lincoln years. Some predated the revolution. And not just an assortment of European Catholics, but also of European protestants - Anglicans, Lutherans and Presbyterians. Of Spanish Jews who were expelled from Catholic Spain during the Inquisition and fled to Holland and England.

Cherry pick our history all you like, but I refuse to ignore the fact that our history also shows that numerous schools - from the primary to university level, hospitals, churches and orphanages were built by Catholics, utilized by many and never attacked.

However I might feeeel about the events you mention or any other in our history - clearly you have an idea of how I should feel. This cult of feeling rather than thinking is reminiscent of insanity.

That you would ask “Why not just oppose illegal aliens, if you wish, without aligning yourself with that history?” when it is you, not to mention the current administration, the SPLC and ADL who is making every effort to align me with that history.

And what, pray tell, makes those efforts any different than the ones that occurred in 1844?

Maybe you could write a post about Liberal candidates who condone porn in education, and also want to expand Virginia public Ed. to include mandatory pre-k for 4 year olds, and how the anti-bvbl folks love the idea. Then argue that they all want to show porn to 4 year olds. Submit this to a Christian values-voter organization, and they will issue a report. Then when a congressman grabs a hold of this and requests hearings on the links between Liberals and CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, point to the report and say, “See, I told you I was right”. Watch the liberals howl.

The problem here is while I know that you, the leadership of HSM, and the membership of HSM are not racists, I also know that hard left liberals DO want children exposed to porn. The ACLU fights every action to prevent the sexualization of our children, up to and including defending organizations such as NAMBLA.

If liberals are howling that you are obstructing their agenda, it is because you are. Keep up the great work.

Nevertheless… I am not against “immigrants”. I am however against illegal immigrants (of any race, creed, color or national origin… yes… even the blue eyed, blond haired ones). They have broken into our country, violated our laws and used our social services without authorization (e.g. roads, schools, hospitals, employment services, etc.).

Legal Chinese immigrants come to our nation and become employed in the sciences. Legal East Indian immigrants come to our nation as doctors and computer scientists. I like these folks. The add to our nation’s net worth.

Not one of the illegal immigrants I see in our town is a doctor, yet they use the services doctors this driving up the cost for all of us. Illegals are a net loss to society.
