They do a reasonably good job on community activities such as high school sports, civic clubs, non-political type events, etc. However, their “reporting” and editorials are mostly a load of politically correct B.S. They attack and belittle those who try to address real problems such as overcrowding and other types of illegal alien misbehavior. The “News and Messenger” is also subservient to their paymasters in the development and real estate community. Most of the problems (taxes, declining quality of life and public services, environmental, etc.) we face in Manassas and Prince William County stem from overdevelopment and local governments (elected officials and bureaucrats) that allow developers to have mostly whatever they want. The “News and Messenger” is not willing to attack their last viable source of revenue with objective reporting and commentary. One example is the massive sexual harassment problem in the County government. It is pervasive in the Planning Office, Public Works and elsewhere. A massive amount of information has come out in the blogs also. The perpetrators are still comfortably sitting in their jobs. Any true news organization would have jumped on this issue in a heartbeat but the “News and Observer” has ignored it completely. I dropped the “News and Messenger” months ago because our Sunday subscription to the Post provides all the paper I really need every week to change my cats’ litter box.
