Question Of The Day

By Greg L | 12 August 2009 | Virginia Politics, Crime | 42 Comments

When Creigh Deeds got nailed for doing 76 mph in a 65 mph zone on July 4th, was it a case of:

A) Deeds putting his own convenience ahead of the safety of everybody else on the road

B) Deeds not capable of paying sufficient attention to the laws that he would execute as Governor should he win in the next election, or

C) evidence that Deeds hasn’t bought into the human-induced global warming hysteria sufficiently to own one of those matchbox cars that can’t get above 75 without adding many more gerbils under the hood, and thus is inadequately concerned about how humans are wrecking the environment and endangering all the polar bears?

Since everyone seems to be talking about this, I imagine a lot of you are in a position to offer some useful insight that would make sense of this.

From the article: “But remember, Bob McDonnell is calling for raising the speed limit to 70 miles per hour on certain interstate stretches.”

He is? Hell yes McDonnell has my vote!!!

Is this the best question you can ask about Deeds Greg?

Doing 76 is wrong and he pays the fine but let the person who has not gone 76 or more on the Interstate be the first to complain. He got caught because the others who were passing him did not. The police can only pull over so many at one time. Now the last 20 miles on I-95 heading into NC they can and I have seen two pulled over at one time. They also set up 3 radars in a row which is fun to watch. One only does 64 coming or going on that strech if you are smart.

To be fair, it could happen to anybody. I had a spotless driving record for 25 years, and got popped one day for doing 13 over. I wasn’t paying attention when the speed limit dropped. I paid my fine and took my points and learned my lesson. Now if memory serves, Faisil Gill had like 3-4 tickets in a single month or similarly short time period. That shows habitual disdain for traffic laws. This case, not so much.

    Greg,
The last time I drove through Virginia, I counted 17 troopers from the Md. line to the NC line. One trooper in NC (at an accident) to SC. No troopers in SC and 3 troopers in Fla. Obviously Gov. Kaine is trying to balance the state budget using the state police, who are grossly under paid. What scum-sucker, in my humble opinion.

    Fo and IJS,

So we’ve mainly proven that we have a better sense of humor than you do?

In a way, this could be a serious issue. Since Deeds does not have a transportation plan, we don’t know if he also supports raising the speed limit. If Deeds does not support raising the speed limit, this incident shows him up to be quite the hypocrite.

In addition, since Deeds has been in the State Senate, he could have introduced a bill to raise the speed limit. As far as I know, he hasn’t. That, too, says something about him, and it isn’t good.

Perhaps he is just trying to fit in with NOVA rat race.

Compared to the highway traffic in this area he seems to be going 4 MPH slower than 20% of drivers. At 76 MPH is is within 3 MPH of 50% of the other drivers.

The rest is a mixed bag.

The closer to the posted speed limit, you will find the people driving with high points or suspended operators permits.

The drivers going the speed limit are illegals trying not to get stopped.

The few driving under the limit are the illegals with outstanding warrents.

IF you’re talking ethics, explain this one…

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/11/AR2009081103281.html

In campaign literature mailed recently to Northern Virginia residents, Robert F. McDonnell touts himself as a “governor that Fairfax County families can be proud to call their own.” In another mailer sent to Hampton Roads residents, he touts himself as “a governor Virginia Beach can be proud to call our own.” But McDonnell, the Republican nominee for governor, doesn’t live in Fairfax or Virginia Beach. He lives in Henrico County, just outside Richmond….

How about that Bob McDonnell was raised in Fairfax and represented the Hampton Roads area?

There was a judge in Botetourt County, Virginia that was giving jail time for 80+ MPH. From what I hear, in Fairfax anything over 90MPH will get you jail time.

It is about the arrogance of power. Is Deeds so important he doesn’t have to obey traffic laws?

There is plenty on the internet to look at. Lets start with Governor Corzine who is losing in his reelection for governor.

    There are interesting parallels.

I agree with Anon-arrogance of power. It starts with traffic laws and builds to bailouts, thousand page bills being rammed through congress and the arrogant attitude that our elected representatives know what’s good for us better than we do. Being a representative in congress should convey no level of power, only responsibility. Hence the name, “public servant”.

I love your posts, but this one on speeding is a little catty… Everyone speeds. Everyone. You speed. I speed. Maybe not all the time, but we do at times. I defy you to show me a single driver that never exceeds a speed limit. Yes, marginally public safety is affected when speeds are exceeded, which is why speed limits are imposed in the first place. I think lambasting him (and I don’t support him or care about him) is a little excessive, given the circumstances of the event.

I could care less about his driving, but I just saw his campaign’s video of an event last week. It’s downright depressing — almost nobody there; those who were, weren’t enthusiastic; and a bunch of campaign zombies with notebooks taking down who-knows-what info about the few unfortunates who showed up.

Yeah, that’s a campaign I want to be anyplace near …
