Our litigious society has raised the cost of medical care to hitherto unknown heights. Doctors can’t afford insurance payments and many simply quit the medical profession.
Who can blame them?

From this stems also the fact that doctors order more tests than are necessary. They’ve got to cover their rears.

You can understand why tort reform was taken off the table when you look into the amounts of money the trial lawyers funnel to the Sociocrats.

I tend to wonder about what kind of malpractice issues these other “cheaper” countries have. Do they allow or are they experiencing huge malpractice awards which drive up health costs?

I am all for just compensation for victims and the use of state medical boards for punishment–not punishing awards that everyone pays for. Its not the doctor, hospital or other part of the health system that pays for these things, it is us.

And tort reform was taken off the table early.

I don’t know what the final legislation will look like (if there’s any legislation at all). However, what I’ve seen discussed looks more like picking some of the main elements of Spain, Germany and France than the former USSR or Cuba. Those systems, like any system made by mortal man, have some faults, but work fairly well according to those who live in them and retain viable elements of choice and access. I have no direct exposure to Spain’s system (widely regarded in Europe as top flight) but have been the beneficiary of France’s and Germany’s system, both of which seem to provide high quality care promptly to those in need. On a macro level, they provide high quality care at lower cost than does the current American system, which is fiendishly expensive, has been placed on the back of employers for purely arbitrary reasons, and which lags in a number of quality indicators when compared to the better systems of Western Europe.

Of course, if the issue really is whether we want a health care system like that of the USSR or Cuba, it surely simplifies things, because no one does and no one has suggested such a thing.
