USCG Thwarts Terror Attack?

By Greg L | 11 September 2009 | National Politics | 33 Comments

Breaking…

The U.S. Coast Guard fired on a boat in the Potomac River today.  Stay tuned for details.

UPDATE: The word from the USCG is that this was a training exercise, but the Park Police who observed this weren’t aware of that.  Not hard to blame them, since the utter stupidity of conducting an exercise with munition simulators on the morning of 9-11 in view of where one of the planes went down utterly boggles the mind.  Incredible.

Coast Guard statement on media report of gunfire on the Potomac

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard reported on Friday that reports in the media were based on overheard radio calls made over a training frequency and that no shots were fired during the exercise.

The exercise was planned in advance and was being conducted on a marine radio frequency reserved for Coast Guard training and operations. No recreational boaters were involved in this training excercise.

We are still gathering information of how this training event might have been misconstrued as an actual incident. We will conduct a thorough review of this incident.

Coast Guard boats were operating in the vicinity of 14th Street and Memorial Bridges this morning. Whether or not these were the same boats using the marine radio frequency used for training purposes has not yet been confirmed.

The best way that we in the Coast Guard can remember Sept. 11 and our security obligations to the nation is to be always ready and this requires constant training and exercise. To ensure the appropriate readiness posture we conduct training scenarios across the nation on a daily basis.

How and when this exercised was conducted will be reviewed.

During the real attacks of 9/11 CNN smeared Bush for seeking safe harbor during the evidents.

During a Coast Guard training exercise, where CNN intentionally misconstrued radio traffic, CNN cites utmost concern for Obama’s safety as his motorcade crossed the Potomac.

Be careful before you blame the Coasties.

OK, Lets not jump to conclusions. Report is that no shots were fired.
Someone snuck a interruption on a SITE where they should have not been and started Fear amoung the People. CNN or what or whoever reported needed to get facts first.
Call the Coast Guard and Check!

They have to practice and if we start eliminating Days, this would really be restrictive.

Lets relax and let the Coast Guard practice and the same goes for Quantico. People yip about Quantico and we have always figured out they are practicing for our Safety and feel very proud that they do this tactic.

They say there were no shots fired,so someone was out to cause trouble. Why?

    I agree with Ted,

these exercises are routine (4 times per week was mentioned) there were no shots, some bonehead CNN reported said she heard “bang bang bang” on a training frequency.

I would want them doing exercises.

I doubt anyone will lose their jobs.

the white house is supporting the USCG.

They are out in the potomac all the time running drills, why should they lapse today?

please remember when when you bash them that you have a service that busts their tails 24/7/365 doing the real thing. Please remember the extensive mission portfolio the CG has and how little money they get, yet they still get the job done. The Country get’s the biggest bang for the buck from the CG more so than arguably any other service so the taxpayers should be thanking them, not bitching. I think it’s a load of crap to bash them.

Or what if it was screw up by the Coast Guard and now they need to cover up? Have I been watching too much NCIS?

Vice Admiral Currier is making a press statement now….smoothing it all over. I expect this one isn’t going to smooth as easily as he would like. Typical military answer for everything.

    startover -

I have no problem with Quantico doing their drills. Granted, my house shakes a little, but I’d rather my house shake from a drill than another terrorist attack.

Let them be - they were doing what they are supposed to be doing. It’s a case of damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

The libtard CNN news hag stated she could hear “bang, bang, bang” on the USCG radio transmission.

Perhaps she was having one of those mid-morning-dryspell- fake-Obama-libtard-orgasmic reactions when she saw the Presidential limo hit that pothole on the 14th Street bridge.

    The Coast Guard?

When Katrina hit New Orleans the ONLY US governemnt agency credited with excellence of execution was the US Coast Guard. Why? Because they drill and drill and drill so they’ll be ready when the kim chee hits the fan. This morning the Coasties were out in the river sharpening their skills. Good for them. Some dim bulb at CNN decided to report an attack without having their facts straight. Shame on for them.

Everybody knows the US Marine Corps motto - semper fidelis or “always faithful”. What is the US Coast Guard motto? semper paratus or “always prepared”. And how do they remain “always prepared”? Practice, practice, practice. And what was the USCG doing this morning? Practicing.

Maybe I’ll send a couple of cases of beer to the US Coast Guard station that had the boats out in the river getting ready to hose down any terroists that are dumb enough to tangle with the Coasties.

Anybody know where the guys out in the river this morning are stationed?

Groveton, the Vice Admiral said that they report to Baltimore.

I was watching CNN when they reported the error. it was like “we all listen to the radio, that’s what we do.” When asked if anyone called the USCG, the reporter said that she had and they said something like “we don’t know what you are talking about.”

She took that as hiding something rather than the fact that she called USCG HQ instead of Baltimore. HQ said that they wouldn’t have known about the exercise.

But if you want to get on TV, report it anyway.

    Ted:

First, thank you for your service to our country. Second, I should have gone to the US Coast Guard web site to look up the motto instead of Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Us_coast_guard. Wikipedia had two translations and I picked the wrong one.

    A PW County Resident

Thanks for the update. Hopefully, those guys don’t have to get their boats from Baltimore to the Potomac if something bad starts to happen. I’ve been fishing the Bay and the Potomac most of my life and that’s a long way!

I’ll see if I can get an e-mail to the Vice Admiral’s office with my support and offer to buy the guys involved some beer. Who knows? I’ll probably first have to convince them that I am not some zonked out liberal trying to send them poisoned beer. Or, they can go have some beer and send me the tab.

CNN is always out there with “breaking news.” Most of the time you get no follow-ups because the story was a non-story but they won’t tell you that. You just don’t hear anything more from them on the subject they touted as a “breaking news story.” Go FOX network!

whatever happened to reporters back-checking their information? This would have been a non-issue had they done that. Wherever I’ve been stationed local news media had good working relationships with the units and called all the time. Why they didnt directly call the unit responsible (they “should” have known, if they were good reporters)? A quick call to the station would have cleared this up. However they decided to release anyway, which was stupid.
