Obama’s Nightmare

By Greg L | 6 October 2009 | National Politics, Virginia Politics | 7 Comments

Since Deeds has never polled above 50%, and not above Bob McDonnell in any poll conducted by anyone since July, it’s looking a lot like a Republican blowout on November 3rd. RCP doesn’t have graphs available for the other statewide races, but the polling on those have been even more favorable to Republicans. About the only question that remains is how many seats will Republicans pick up in the House of Delegates? Just a few, or a lot?

Obama’s policies and the behavior of Democrat-controlled Congress are gutting the Democrat brand this election cycle. With a solid thumping in Virgina, and the real possibility of Corzine going down in defeat in New Jersey, Democrats are going to be awfully gun-shy going into the November 2010 elections about supporting the kinds of legislative initiatives Obama has promised to his key constituencies. In four weeks, the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda may well be completely trashed.

If you don’t particularly care to engage in a fight over granting amnesty to illegal aliens or gutting Medicare in order to provide them with taxpayer-funded health insurance, you might want to do whatever you can to make sure that Republican victories on November 3rd are as large as possible. The bigger thumping Democrats get four weeks from now, the more likely they will re-think what they’re trying to do in Congress.

UPDATE: Pollster.com has a graph even more disturbing for Democrats. Anyone seeing these trendlines converge? I thought not.

I heard a commercial Kaine did for Deed’s this morning. Kaine is blaming the lagging economy in Virginia on republicans.

That was the best laugh I’ve had in days!

I don’t if I’m just paying attention more or what, but I find the Deeds’ TV/radio ads i.e. “McDonnell’s crusade to take us back to the Dark Ages”, and stickers i.e. “Backward Bob” as childish and insulting as I’ve ever seen.

They’re not clever and they have the ring of desperation.

Has it been this bad in the past or is it really worse now?

If you look at results over the last few cycles, the electorate is becoming both increasingly more partisan and voting down ticket. The Gilmore/Warner race with the electorate 10 years ago would have resulted in a race where Gilmore would have been lucky to get his own vote. If the Dems can’t drive their voters out, they could be looking at a disaster.

The Democrats haven’t been winning votes among the more established electorate as much getting likely Democratic non-voters to vote over the last few years. With the size of the non-voting electorate, this makes sense, but if there is no fervor to drive voters out, it looks like the Dems could be facing a disaster. Their best legislators and the ones with the most community pull are largely from the Senate not from the House (thats a subjective opinion, but what are you gonna do).

Creigh’s relative weakness among African-Americans, lousy field operation, and pulling out of PWC are killing him and likely wrecking down-ticket races. Relying on crossover votes is a bad policy. No self-respecting Democrat is going to the polls to vote for Taliban Bob and then to vote for Democratic legislatures. At the same time, no self-respecting Republican is going to go vote for a Democrat because they vote the way they want them to vote. If the choice is between a Democrat who votes for Republican policies sometimes and a Real Republican in a Republican year, the Republican gets the vote.

As a Democrat, I think that a Republican blowout would actually serve the long term interests of the country and the Democratic Party by forcing Tim Kaine out of the DNC.

Watch the commentary on November 4th…the state that gave Obama 13 electoral votes will suddenly become racist.

Here’s some more from the Washington Post:

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/virginiapolitics/2009/10/post_397.html

Gov. Tim Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said today that President Obama’s support is crucial for Democrat Creigh Deeds to win the Virginia governor’s race, but said he could not confirm that Obama would return to the state to campaign.

    So is the president coming?

“I can’t say one way or another,” he said.

Obama’s policies hurt Deeds this election cycle, and now Obama is distancing himself from Deeds because he thinks Deeds is going to lose.
