Church Contributions Diverted To Support Radical Political Agendas

By Greg L | 24 October 2009 | Illegal Aliens, Virginia Politics | 9 Comments

Remember back when a bunch of liberal religious leaders held a rally in support of amnesty for illegal aliens? As Les Femmes reports, VOICE is getting financial support from the collection plates passed around in local Catholic churches under the guise of “helping the poor.” Some local parishoners are getting increasingly concerned that money solicited for helping the poor is being diverted to suppport liberal political agendas that are often in direct contrast to the teachings of the church, and hopefully their efforts to reform such church organizations as the Catholic Campaign for Human Development will be successful.  There’s absolutely no reason the Catholic church should be supporting ACORN, organizations that promote amnesty for illegal aliens, or those that support abortion on demand.

The Catholic Media Collection (CMC) has posted a two-minute video on YouTube warning Catholics about supporting the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. This scandalous collection has poured millions of dollars into liberal groups over the past thirty years while telling people in the pews the money goes to help “the poor.” Some of it does. So what? Would you drink a glass of water that was one third sewage? The CCHD collection verges on fraud!

The only reason CCHD stopped funding ACORN was because of embezzlement by one of the board members. The bishops didn’t address ACORN’s horrible agenda which has been all too obvious in recent months. The pretense that ending funding to ACORN has eliminated the scandal is ridiculous when you consider that many of the other community organizing groups receiving money operate exactly like ACORN does and are engageing in the same type of liberal lobbying.

Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) receives 15-17% of the collections. Its affiliates bus people to meetings to pressure politiicans to make the “right” liberal choice. Fr. Tuck Grinnell here in the Arlington Diocese provided 5 or 6 buses for one IAF VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement). meeting. One of their big issues is immigration reform. While their website talks about improving processing time for “legal” immigrants, Fr. Grinnell is using VOICE to advocate for “comprehensive immigration reform” and sponsored a forum featuring pro-abortion Catholic Jim Moran who favors blanket amnesty for illegal aliens as well as in-state tuition and other goodies. VOICE received $40,000 in the 2009 CCHD grant cycle.

Please pass this video on to your Catholic friends. If they want more information send them to the CMC website which has numerous articles on CCHD. They can also visit SperoForum and google Stephanie Block. This disgrace has gone on long enough. Many parishes are running in the red. Why are millions being funneled to secular groups that often have an agenda diametrically opposed to the Church?

Let’s hope folks like the Catholic Media Collection are successful in their efforts to have these serious questions addressed.  Churches need help, the poor need help, and there’s no shortage at all of people and organizations that legitimately need the charitable contributions solicitied during services.  Diverting the money they need to support radical political agendas standing directly at odds with church teachings is utterly irresponsible to the point one wonders whether the hand of God is at work here, or more likely, something else entirely.

It is scandal (in the original meaning of the word) for Catholics and Catholic churches to fund abortion organizations. Parish councils MUST exercise oversight of their pastor fund management and refuse to have congregations contributions go to fund programs violating fundamental Catholic doctrine (e.g. Notre Dame University, gay marriage advocacy, and pro-abortion organizations) or groups overrun with fraud and legal abuses, such as ACORN.

This is not new. For years, special collections have been masked with misleading “names” and insufficient (if not intentionally hidden) disclosure of intended use. And, the lack of doctrinally correct leadership in the “new” Arlington Diocese has allowed the abuses to grow locally.

There is no substitute for oversight by parish members to ensure contributions are applied to programs consistent with the Magisterium. We can’t count on our local Bishop’s administration anymore.

Democrat Pastor Luke Torian running in the 52nd has been mentioned “As a founding member of VOICE” (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement), on Moving Virginia Forward website.

This has been going on for way too many decades.
From LesFemmes’ past issues (Vol. 13, No. 3, Autumn 2008):
“In 1994 The Wanderer, a national Catholic weekly, ran a series of articles by Paul Likoudis about what was then called The Campaign for Human Development. (The word Catholic was added later.) The group was celebrating 25 years and the more than $200 million donated, ostensibly to aid the poor. Likoudis wrote that the anniversary “brought [many U.S. Catholics] to plead with the… bishops for an investigation of and an audit into what kinds of programs the ecclesiastical apparat has funded.”4 He exposed a broad range of serious problems. They included financing organizations that support abortion and contraception, funneling money into leftist groups working for socialistic political goals, and organizing voter drives to elect radical politicians. (In 1996 leading pro-life Congressman Bob Dornan was targeted by CCHD-funded groups that worked to elect pro-abortion playgirl Loretta Sanchez.)”

Greg, Legal2 is right. The CCHD has been scamming the Catholic faithful for decades. It would be interesting to find out just how the Bishops were first duped into diverting so much of the Sunday church offerings into this national scam. My own Bishop Loverde of the Arlington Diocese started getting wise to it last year at this time in the heat of the 2008 elections, when it had been established that ACORN was generously feeding itself from the CCHD trough. At the same time, he disciplined one of his priests for speaking out against the CCHD from the pulpit one Sunday to warn unsuspecting collection givers. Also regrettably, three or four new radical organizations have replaced the CCHD and are cozying up to the Bishops again, hoping to greatly improve their cash flows before their real agendas are unmasked.

“Playgirl?) BARF!!!. “B-1″ Bob Dornan was “screwed” on that election and he proved a large number of the votes cast for Sanchez were illegal (fraudulant) and cast by “non-citizens.” Again, he was “SCREWED!”
